  • New Audi TT-RS Stops Playing Coy, Gives Us The Full Monty

    ttrs090008_large__mid

Quickly abandoning the strip tease initiated earlier this week, Audi has graced us with full-frontal TT-RS nudity in a series of new high-res pics. Scheduled to debut officially next week at the Geneva Motor Show, the brand new Audi TT-RS isn’t approved for U.S. launch, but that doesn’t put a damper on our spirits. Equipped with a direct-inject, turbocharged 2.5L 5-banger, Audi claims the TT-RS is capable of producing well over 300 bhp and white-knuckle performance on the road. Electronically limited to 250 kmh/h (155 mph), Audi also boasts the new TT-RS is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) in “nowhere near five seconds,” but we’ll let the real-world testing be the official judge of that.

  • “Smart” BMW Nav System Knows Where You’re Going Before You Do

    2010_bmw_interior

Although not anticipated to be ready for release until about five years down the road, BMW’s newest in-car navigation system is poised to take driver connectivity to a whole new level. Dubbed ILENA (Intelligent Learning Navigation), BMW’s new navigational prototype tracks driving habits and compares them to the current location to anticipate where the driver intends to go next. In terms of usefulness, the ILENA system is aimed less at enhancing the driver’s ease of navigation, and more at improving the vehicle’s performance. By accurately identifying the next location, ILENA will allow other on-board computers to adjust the vehicle’s performance output and maximize energy efficiency (which is similar in theory to the way a dual-mode hybrid automatically switches to electric-only power at speeds of 25mph or less).

According to BMW, even during the infant stages of testing, ILENA already posts an 80% success rate in accurately guessing the next location. By the time the technology is refined enough for production, expect ILENA’s accuracy to be on target enough to force you to get really creative when lying to your wife.

  • GM Sinks $250M Into Engine Production For Chevy Volt, Cruze

    Auto Show Opening

After apparently receiving favorable news from the Treasury Department, GM has released a statement assuring the public they will still be investing $250 million into the reconstruction of their Flint, Michigan plant in order to accommodate engine production of GM’s new 1.4-liter 4-cylinder Family 0. Intended for use beneath the hood of both the Chevy Volt and Chevy Cruze, the Family 0 engine’s unique technology has required GM to acquire costly new machinery and equipment, yet possess the long-term potential to be a very profitable investment. By “recycling” the Flint plant, GM will not only spare themselves the cost of retooling, but will also create the most flexible and competitive engine manufacturing lines in the world.

Initial preparation for the new equipment installation will begin this spring, and GM aims to begin production of 4-banger Family 0 in December of 2010.

  • Obama Appoints Steven Rattner As Head Of Auto Task Force

    Obama
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., East Room of the White House in Washington, Monday, Feb. 23, 2009.

The Obama Administration has appointed 56-year-old Wall Street veteran Steven Rattner as the official head of the Presidential Task Force on the Auto Industry. Colloquially still referred to as the “car czar,” Rattner will serve as the official liaison between Treasury Department Secretary Tim Geither and Obama’s 10-person advisory board impaneled to oversee the aggressive restructuring of the auto industry. According to reports, although Rattner will advise “…on a variety of economic and financial matters, [he] will lead the Treasury’s efforts with regard to the automobile sector.”

A former New York Times reporter and current managing partner of a successful hedge fund, although Rattner joins the group with negligible knowledge of the automotive industry itself, his strong political connections are highly valued and are expected to serve him well during his appointment. This week, Rattner will perform his first official duties as car czar this week when several D.C. officials meet with Chrysler and GM to discuss bankruptcy and restructuring options.

  • Toyota Supra/Celica Revival Cancelled, Subieyota Sports FR Still On

    toyota_ft-hs_concept

In light of the financial crisis currently wracking the auto industry, Toyota has reportedly cancelled plans to revive the high-performance Supra/Celica line. Rumored to be hard at work on a production version of the FT-HS concept unveiled at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, Toyota has apparently abandoned any intention of releasing a new performance coupe in favor of focusing on more profitable endeavors (read: “Prius-palooza”). However, fanboys needn’t despair quite yet: Toyota’s newest announcement does not appear to apply to the Subaru/Toyota WRX/Celica mashup.

Originally scheduled to debut in 2011, the Subieyota Sports FR has been postponed for launch until March 2012, but it has not been cancelled. Unlike many other performance ventures, the obstacles the Subaru/Toyota Sports FR have been met with are not financial but rather technical. According to reports, the Sports FR’s production delay is a direct result of complications that arose while attempting to mate Toyota’s D-4S direct-injection system with Subaru’s flat-4 boxer engine. Engineering complications aside, Akio Toyoda himself confirmed that the Sports FR will continue has planned, hitting dealer lots in 2012 with a price tag of around $21k.

  • Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic Plans Swiss Invasion In March

    maserati_gran_turismo_s_geneva

Much to the delight of trust fund playboys with cash to burn and little working knowledge of advanced driving techniques (yes, we’re bitter), Maserati announced this week that they will be unveiling the automatic gearbox variant of the GranTurismo S at the Geneva Motor Show in a few weeks. No longer limiting the automatic tranny to the less powerful end of the engine lineup, the new GranTurismo S Automatic is powered by a 4.7L V8 rated at 440 horsepower at 7000rpm and 361 lb-ft of torque (490 Nm) at 4,750rpm. Outside of the engine bay, the GranTurismo S Auto will also be immediately identifiable by model-exclusive door skirts designed to highlight the 20″ Trident-emblazoned wheels.

For fans of the windblown look, sources are reporting that Maserati will also debut the drop-top version of the GranTurismo alongside the S Automatic, though Maserati has yet to confirm the rumors.

  • Tesla Model S Shows Electrifying Profile In Teaser Image #2

    tesla_model_s1

As the March debut date of the new Tesla Model S draws closer, a new image has been released to join the first teaser dropped a few weeks ago. Much like the first, little can be concluded from the cryptic photograph other than that the new Tesla sedan will bear a strong resemblance to its Roadster brother. Details on the Model S are nearly has hard to come by as photographs, but we have learned that the Model S scheduled for unveiling at Tesla’s design studios next month is merely a prototype of the production-ready vehicle. A slight letdown for some, Tesla’s mid-March preview is actually quite generous given the 18-month gap between it and the scheduled delivery date for the first Tesla sedans.

Currently accepting pre-orders for the luxury electric sedan, the images that have appeared on the web were leaked from an exclusive brochure sent from Tesla to the 100 customers who pre-ordered the first fleet of Tesla “Signature Series” sedans. Already received with the same A-List enthusiasm as the Roadster, orders for the Tesla Model S are expected to reach back-order status very quickly.
