Like mad scientists splicing bits and pieces of animal carcasses together to create something unholy, Dinan is prepping a BMW M3 equipped with a 638 HP version of the BMW V10. The heart of this ludicrous M3 will be a 5.7 liter bored-and-stroked version of the 5.0-liter DOHC 40-valve V10 found in the BMW M5 and BMW M6. This engine swap is not unprecedented, as Hamann, Hartge and AC Schnitzer have done it before, but this will be the first time major engine modification will be involved. Look for this manic M3 to break sound barriers in the near future. [ Modified L&E ]

We've given you the muscle and the customs of the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise . Now it's time for the hot rods. — Ed. Metal-flake, flames, chrome wheels or just plain flat-black, the appeal of hot rods stretches across generations. The Woodward Dream Cruise brings 'em out in droves, so here are just a few of of the chopped, channeled and shaved rat rods and T-buckets we saw on the Avenue over the weekend. galleryPost('wdc08hotrods', 24, 'Hot Rods of the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise');

In a sad follow-up to a story we brought you during our 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise coverage, the Ford GT-powered Ford Five Hundred built by Washtenaw Community College students was involved in an accident returning home from the Saturday event. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but newspaper reports of the incident state that the trailer containing the Five Hundred and a motorcycle swerved out of control and flipped, requiring both vehicles to be "cut from the trailer." To WCC and the entire automotive community, we mourn your loss today. Perhaps a GT500KR-powered Focus project would make you feel better. [ MLive ; Thanks, Mike the Dog ]

This car is almost too smooth. An original-series Ford Thunderbird is a fairly common occurrence at car shows, Woodward Dream Cruise or not. So it would be easy to pass right by this one. But the subtle lack of ornamental chrome and flawless pearl paint draw the eye. From the front, gold-painted perforated steel replaces much of the backdrop chrome mesh; it's not until you head to the back that you realize the huge changes that have been made. Extended fins take this Thunderbird from mild to kustom in one fell swoop. galleryPost('WDCtbird', 9, 'Super Smooth T-Bird Kustom'); Follow the fun at our Woodward Dream Cruise tag for all of our coverage of the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise , the largest one-day automotive event in the world!

The thing about the Cobra 427 is that you can never take all of your friends along while they're getting drunk. If only there was a longer Cobra with another four seats, each with its own five-point harness, a bottle cooler in the middle with six glass holders (?), and big amps. Then you could be your own Woodward Dream Cruise stretched-limo Cobra party — yay! galleryPost('WDCcobralimo', 9, 'This Is Incredibly Stupid AND Awesome');

At Washtenaw Community College near Ann Arbor, MI, you can take algebra and English lit. You can also take Custom Cars & Concepts, where your assignments might include building a mid-engine Ford Five Hundred with a supercharged 5.3-liter Ford GT engine putting out 550 HP. What course would you choose? Instructor Scott Malnar told us this beast was entirely student-built and took first place at the Autorama show two years ago in the "street exhibition and performance" category. One look at the gallery below will tell you it was well-deserved. galleryPost('ford500gt40woodward', 6, 'Kids Build The Darndest Things'); Follow the fun at our Woodward Dream Cruise tag for all of our coverage of the 2008 Woodward Dream Cruise , the largest one-day automotive event in the world!

Unfortunately, the guy on this thing was in a hurry to get on his way, so we only got a little info, but the pictures here speak for themselves. This home-built thingamajig named "The Devil's Joke" was built as a tribute to Vietnam vets and apparently, total insanity. The power train here is a 2.8 liter Ford V6 sporting an Offenhauser intake and a four-barrel carb. Pay close attention to how it's steered, throttled and suspended. Brilliant. galleryPost('whattheheck', 9, 'The Devils Joke');

Polish car-making newbie Veno Automotive apparently has a fist full of dollars from private capital investor Heros Capital, and they're looking to spend it on an extravagant copy of the Lamborghini Reventon . The nameless supercar will have 'jet fighter' styling cues and power from Audi's 4.2 liter V8, but we're wondering if it might be a bit too ambitious. Listen, my fellow Polskis; we're great at math and we can do magical things with cabbage, but we've been known to make occasional fools of ourselves. This just has breathtaking disaster written all over it. galleryPost('venosupercar', 3, 'Gwumpkie Scented Supercar'); [ CarScoop ]

Chalk it up to personal style, but some folks prefer to wander aimlessly through the sea of cars during the big Saturday Woodward Dream Cruise event, while other like to have a plan of attack for the whole day. If you fall into the latter category, the Detroit News has breakdown of every event, by town and price, put together for your planning pleasure. We tend to be more of the former though, so we don't need no stinkin' plans. [ Detroit News ]

The tough part about the Woodward Dream Cruise is the staggering array of awesomeness that shows up. Focusing on any one car for more than a couple of minutes would test anybody's concentration. That said, here's a collection of various forms of superlative automotive excellence from last night's wanderings. Also, let us know if you've got something you'd like us to keep an eye open for — might as well provide some cotomer sevis during this festival of style. galleryPost('wdcpotpourri', 12, 'So Many Cars To Ogle');

Well before Adam West donned his sexy skin-tight Bat Suit and hopped into the Galaxie version of the Batmobile, DC's "Dark Knight" had a little-known, slightly less sleek sled. The original 1940s era Batmobile was apparently a mix of VW Beetle and Cord style — with the requisite wings and fins, of course. Bob Dullum may have built a bitchin' Tumbler , but someone thought that was way too new, so they built a replica of the original Batmobile, which we've dropped below the fold, with somewhat less impressive results. Beetle... check "Custom" paint... check Hand-fabricated bat wing... er... check Great success. [ BamKapow

The story of Steve McHugh, the man behind the radical Nova kit car we initially posted on a lark (and because we're automotive sadists) just keeps getting curiouser and curiouser. Steve recently emailed us to let us in on a little secret — he's been building crazy-ass cars for nigh on twenty-eight years now. Since 1980, Steve's been applying his personal style of vehicular extremism to anything he can get his hands on. He even sent us pictures of this favorites. Heck, we'll let him tell you all about it below, along with more pics of Steve's marvelous mechanical masterpieces. galleryPost('custommadness', 6, '22 Images Chronicling the Madness Of Steve McHugh'); Hi all, Here are some pics of my past works all done without garage, on my drive. I started on a bike licence back in 1980 so I built my tree wheeler ODYSSEY, a well known car around the custom scene, winning many trophies and most radical at Blackpool indoor show. It had a roof chop to the...

Corvetteblogger has put together a list of the top five appearance modifications according to Eckler's Corvette Parts , and to us, it reads like a who's who of who cares modifications. Perhaps the Vette just has a shape too good for serious modification, or that its owners think just a little more chrome is in order, but the mods mostly center around adding the shiny stuff. The comprehensive list below the fold. In no particular order: Corvette Side Fender Styling Grilles, Perforated, Stainless Steel — $49.99 per pair Corvette Waterfall Emblem, Convertible — $64.99 Corvette Rear Cargo Shade, With Embroidered C6 Logo — $79.99 Corvette Grille, Polished Billet Aluminum — $159.99 Corvette Rear Bumper Letter Set — $64.99 a set Now, maybe we're just uncouth speed freaks, but for our dollar you wouldn't find us tacking these bits to our Vette. There's urethane bushings, cold air intakes, performance chips and all manner of what-have-you we'd...

Credit is due to Nike for creating a vehicle that makes us suddenly care about the AST Dew Tour. Built on an armored amphibious military truck platform — we think a variation of the XM410 — the vehicle combines a 1970's camper with a mobile skate park. There are multiple unique features on this truck for the extreme athlete, including rails for extreme grinding, speakers for pumping out extreme music, a quarter-pipe for extreme skateboarding and a BBQ gallery for extreme BBQing. Despite the "extremeness" of the vehicle, this has the makings of an excellent Post-Apocalytpic Survival Vehicle for Tony Hawk. Now what to call it? Details below the jump: galleryPost('nikeamphi', 3, 'Blow It Up'); HELP WANTED: NAME THE ILL-MOBILE Nike 6.0 and the BMX Crew are at the first stop of the AST Dew Tour in Baltimore. When we first brought you images of a heavily modified Nova kit car , we knew nothing about it other than its shocking appearance and innovative styling direction. We'd literally never seen anything like it before. Some opined on its terribleness while others thought it wonderful — we'll say it's at least interesting as hell. But what about the rest of the story? galleryPost('completednova', 6, 'The Fine Line Between Insanity And Genius'); Steve McHugh is a man with a passion for Nova kit cars, and the white beast we all witnessed is his creation. Obviously it didn't start out that way: Steve has gone through three different major iterations of the car over the course of ten years. Each time he reworks the car, it gets a little bit wilder. The original version was essentially just a lightly modified version of the kit, with some lower body modifications and grafted-on Cougar headlights. We see it preserved for posterity below. galleryPost('novastage1'...
