November car sales numbers are coming in and they’re what you expect them to be — horrendous. Ford is down 31% month-to-month with last year. Toyota fell even further at 33.9% . That's successful compared to GM's 41% drop . Even Honda is down 31.6% . What's going on? Carpocalypse Now is going on, that's what! The entire auto industry is screwed at the moment, and it's not just the U.S. automakers. Since Toyota’s and Honda’s numbers are in the crapper it points to what we've been saying from the start. This is less an issue of a problem with our dear domestic car makers and more of a problem with a lack of desire on the part of consumers to buy from any company. People have either already lost their jobs, ot they're scared of losing their jobs — in addition to their houses and their way of life. When people are that scared, they just don't spend money. It's as simple as that. It also doesn't help there's little in the way of accessible...

Sometimes a car's asking price makes sense… and sometimes there's Booth Number Two. Yesterday, 82% of you opted for the latter choice for the $325,000 Porsche 914 . Today we get to contemplate the definition of "classic." Is a 14-year-old Toyota a classic, worth paying a huge premium for a pristine, low-miles example? This '94 Supra Turbo has just 8,857 miles on the clock, and it looks really, really clean. But $66,991? And why the odd price? Why not a car-dealer standard $66,999, or a no-nonsense $67,000? What do you think? galleryPost('NPOCP94Supra', 6, '1994 Toyota Supra For 67 Grand'); [ Auto Trader , thanks to BZR for the tip] $66,991 for a low-miles '94 Supra? ( polls )

Toyota has contacted Jalopnik and informed us their company's perplexing attempt to claim rights to desktop images uploaded by users and hosted at DesktopNexus was the result of an "internal miscommunication" and they they offered a sincere apology to those at the site involved in the fracas. This is a major reversal. As recently as Moday the company's lawyers were threatening to pursue legal action if any desktop image with any Toyota vehicle was left on DesktopNexus . To Toyota's credit, they realized what a major publicity mistake they were making and quickly changed course before making it an even bigger story. The statement from Toyota below the jump. Hi Matt. The recent request Toyota made to have certain photos of Toyota vehicles removed from the public wallpaper site, DesktopNexus, was the result of an internal miscommunication. To protect the legal rights and agreements we have with the photographers we hire, we ask that the photographs not be used for direct...

newVideoPlayer("/87_Corolla_FX_494.flv", 506, 423,""); Everyone remembers the FX16 Corolla , but what about the plain ol' economical FX? It was the cheapest Corolla you could get, and the ones sold here were made in California… and it appears that most of them are still on the road today. Sure, that flat hatch looked hideous a little odd, but in an endearing sort of way.

There are really two kinds of press campaigns surrounding the 2010 Toyota Prius right now, the official ones with silly pictures of knobs and carpet and bolts and the like , then there's the other kind that leaks the whole car and major details, like the one see today. In this set of low-resolution images we see the Prius in profile, the layout of the all-digital dash, the amount of cargo room we can expect, and that the new car will be getting headlight washers — certainly one of those hefty options absolutely necessary for a super efficient hybrid. galleryPost('priusteaseroops', 6, 'Toyota Prius '); It also seems the rumor of asymmetric headlights can be put to bed even though the first set of unofficial images showed such a thing. Oh well, still looks smiley even though it'll no longer be winking at us. It's going to be a long slog to the Detroit Auto Show next January where the Prius is set to be revealed. [ PriusChat ]

Toyota has released images of the Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid Concept , or the T. Boone Pickens cruiser as we like to call it. Already known for their gas-electric hybrids, this concept combines the Hybrid Synergy Drive system with a natural gas-fueled engine. Toyota claims the Hybrid should travel more than 250 miles per fill-up, which could theoretically occur at any of the approximately 1,000 CNG refueling stations in the US. As this is currently just a concept, they've added an aggressive body kit with a covered grille which certainly distinguishes it from the regular Camry Hybrid. Natural gas has been part of the alternative fuel discussion because of its domestic production capacity and relatively stable price. Details about the CNG Hybrid Camry from Toyota below. galleryPost('toyotacamrycnghybrid', 6, 'Toyota CNG Camry Hybrid'); A Camry Hybrid Fueled by CNG As you very likely know, we’re big believers in the concept of hybrid vehicles. newVideoPlayer("/82_Starlet_JDM_476.flv", 506, 423,""); Those sand rails had better look out, because the Starlet- right off the boat from Japan and sporting JDM fender mirrors and right-hand-drive- now rules the desert! Never mind the fuel-economy thing; it's off-road prowess that gets Starlets off the showroom floor!

Even mighty Toyota is feeling the pinch of the self-fulfilling prophecy that is the disintegration of the economy, with rumors surfacing production of the 2010 Toyota Prius in the Tupelo, Mississippi plant will be delayed. That'll keep all Prius production in Japan for the time being. Demand for the gas-thrifty hybrids has fallen as fuel prices have plummeted to sub-$2.00 levels, leaving dealers sitting on a healthy but still enviable 21 day supply. This could also be a reconsideration of strategy, since the dollar has strengthened and a collapse of any of the big three could be a deathblow to some shared domestic parts suppliers, leaving the Prius high and dry with an otherwise profitable assembly line. We'll keep our eyes out for movement back to Tupelo, but don't expect it to come anytime soon. galleryPost('toyotaprius10', 6, 'Toyota Prius Yet To Be Unveiled In Detroit'); galleryPost('priusteasers', 6, 'The Silly Teasers Toyota Is Handing Out Like...

The owner of DesktopNexus , a major provider of user-generated desktop backgrounds on the web, was contacted by Toyota's lawyers and told any image featuring a Toyota, Scion or Lexus vehicle was property of Toyota and should be removed, including images created by users. As you'd imagine, the users at DesktopNexus are not pleased and have been uploading Toyotas at a furious rate with titles like "Don't Buy Toyota" and "Copyright This" in order to show their disapproval. We look at the legal and PR issues Toyota must face after kicking a hornet's nest — a hornet's nest full of underemployed people with Photoshop skills and blogs — below the jump. galleryPost('toyotadesktops', 6, 'The Press Photos Toyota Doesnt Want You To See — On DesktopNexus '); The automaker clearly owns the car images it created, such as press photos and catalogs. However, Toyota loses some authority over these works when they disseminate them...

Midafternoon last Wednesday, Top Gear USA host Eric Stromer 's Toyota Camry Hybrid flipped after being hit from behind while traveling through the streets of Hollywood. The blow slid the car up onto a curb and the car rolled up onto it's passenger side. A decidedly stoic palm tree put a stop to the proceedings although no air bags whatsoever were deployed. Stromer emerged from his hybrid unharmed but markedly startled and in a radio interview on fellow TG USA host Adam Corolla 's radio show, Stromer dishes that his primary concern during the accident was spilling his newly purchased "triple grande nonfat latte." We are looking forward to the gripping social commentary Stromer will bring to the table for the new series . [ The Adam Carolla Show ]

We've had an abnormally high number of pickup truck first drives recently — the 2009 Ford F-150 , the 2008 Toyota Tundra , the 2009 Chevy Silverado and the 2009 Dodge Ram . Why? Because we've been working in conjunction with PickupTrucks.com to bring you a full blown comparison on the 2009 models of every half-ton truck currently for sale in the 'merican market and here it is. It's got all the numbers on towing, handling, braking and acceleration — everything a serious truck buyer could ever need. Frankly, that's the easy part. The subjective determination of which one's the best? That's harder to nail down, but it's what we're here for. galleryPost('09pickupcomparo', 12, '2009 Pickup Testing Spectacular'); 2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Auto Cross 2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Braking Challenge Results 2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Drag Strip Acceleration Results 2009 Pickup Truck Comparison: Towing Results The competitors...

Back in August we told you Lexus plans to unveil a new hybrid-only model at the Detroit Auto Show in January at the same time as the reveal of the new third-generation 2010 Toyota Prius . Now, a newly published rendering from Japanese buff book Mag-X may give us some clues of what to expect from a car they claim will be badged as the Lexus HS250h. We'll let Mag-X take it from here: The drawing reveals a well-proportioned four-door car with Prius-like lines and angles—especially the front slope of its windshield and hood—while retaining design cues which are unmistakably Lexus, most notably the back-end and taillight styling. The publication says the Lexus HS250h will most likely be outfitted with the 2.4-liter engine and electric motor combo found in the Toyota Camry Hybrid, and share many of the same mechanicals as that car. This includes the current-generation nickel metal hydride battery. Carrying over the powertrain would be significantly more cost-effective than developing an entirely...

Not really. We're almost 100% sure the top photo, uncovered by the very strange-to-look-at Vince Burlapp, is a Toyota Aurion , the Camry's Australian sibling, and not the 2010 Toyota Camry. Though it isn't the new, next-generation Camry, it is a reminder America's best-selling mid-size car will likely get a makeover soon. Rather than the more bland styling of the Aurion, we suspect the next face lift for the Camry will include the sharper headlights of the Matrix and U-shaped grille of the new Corolla . We've also been told to expect the next Camry update to include at least one new engine. We do not, however, expect it to come in flavors other than vanilla.[ Burlapp Cars ]

Welcome to Project Car Hell , where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! Last time we had another PCH Superpower upset, with Germany beating Britain in the Glas Versus Lotus challenge . Britain will come back strong, of course, but for now Germany can enjoy the pool of oil gathering beneath the Project Car Hell trophy. Fast forward to today; since it's Maximum Minivan Day , we're going to have Maximum Project Minivan Hell. For a Toyota to qualify for Project Car Hell, it must be rusty, rare, and packed with impossible-to-find options. We've found all three with this 1989 Toyota 4x4 van (go here if the ad disappears), which has some body rot (in a refreshing display of honesty, the seller sums it up in a single word: "Rusty") and the super-rare-in-North-America 4x4 drivetrain option. There's an assortment of minor (you hope) repairs to do, and it's nearly certain possible that the overheating problem...
