It's official — despite Jalopnik and over 80,000 arrowhead fan boys best efforts, Pontiac's decided to officially name the Pontiac G8 Sport Truck the unimaginative name of " Pontiac G8 ST ." Frankly, we were as disappointed as you are. So we did what all fan boys of what could have been the new "El Camino" do when they're disappointed — we broke open a case of PBR. After a few beers we decided to get fellow El Camino fan boy Mike Levine from PickupTrucks.com to help us set up a conference call with Pontiac marketing director Craig Bierley. Our purpose was to get to the bottom of how a process that seemed to encourage the type of fan movements like our "Vote El Camino" campaign would seemingly result in Pontiac choosing the original name of the vehicle. Interestingly, when we asked the question — Bierley told us Pontiac "didn't really have ST as the name when we engaged in the process, we were just calling it a sport truck...

Despite a report from KickingTires.com two months ago that "El Camino" was officially out as a name for the new ute from Pontiac , we're now being told by Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson the name is still very much in the mix. What reason there may have been for this change? Unknown. But all we do know is if the chance still exists to bring back the "El Cam" — to any GM brand — we're in full support of it. What we're not in support of — dropping a V6 between the rails. More on that below the jump. galleryPost('Doane2010PontiacG8STExt', 6, 'An El Camino In Everything But Brand'); In addition to the news on the name, we're hearing from our friends at G8 Nation that Pontiac is now considering an additional power plant offering aside from the 361 HP 6.0-liter V8 power plant that is found in the Pontiac G8 GT. It's no surprise then that this new engine would be the same 3.6-liter 256 HP V6 found in the G8 V6 sedan, giving...

Let's say you're in South Africa and you just can't get your hands on a good vintage 1956 Mercedes-Benzamino (or, in the local parlance, a Mercedes-Benz Bakkie ). Fortunately, The General sells a Gamma-platform-based bakkie known as the Opal Corsa Utility. Sure, it's front-wheel-drive, but it's a factory-built car with a truck bed nonetheless. Thanks to Franzouse for the tip! [GM South Africa] galleryPost('OpelCorsamino', 6, '2008 Opel Corsa Utility For South Africa');

We're able to forgive GM's main product man and vice-chairman, "Maximum" Bob Lutz, over his gaffe on the xtremely secret GMC pickup car concept with the news we've now got. Just to recap -- if you'll remember earlier today we told you he was wrong about which show it'd debut in. Originally, a number of outlets reported the concept would hit the showroom floor in New York based on Lutz's comments. Although we knew that wasn't the case, we held off on reporting on anything other than the reports themselves until we were absolutely sure it'd hit the New York Auto Show floor. Now we know why he was so confused. You see, there will be another unibody El Camino pickup truck-car hitting the floor in New York. That's right -- we're hearing the new "El Cam" -- the Pontiac G8 ST will be revealed officially this year in New York. Michael Levine of PickupTruck.com has the full scoop below. "Very reliable sources have told PickupTruck...

Despite earlier reports the four-door Zeta-platform GMC concept pickup truck would be coming to the New York Auto Show, we've been told by people in the know it'll be hitting the floor at the Chicago Auto Show. We guess we'll be seeing it much earlier than expected. Maybe "Maximum" Bob Lutz was just having a senior moment of some kind. Our sources also indicate it'll have a drastically different look than anything else out of Australia with a truck bed -- including the Holden Crewman ute up top. But it's not just the looks that'll be different. We're told the form factor will be an entirely unibody design -- not just the weird-ass unibody front end with a half-chassis welded on to the back like the Crewman. A true car-based pickup truck. The mere thought's causing our pants to start to tighten. We mean, is this GMC an xtremely interesting development or what? Come on, is this seriously the new GMC -- Caballero ? We can only hope. But one thing's...

As we hinted at yesterday -- we had the opportunity to sit down (with a group of other auto journos -- but it totally felt like it was just the two of us in that room. Or maybe it's just because I could care less about the fuel economy and economic issues surrounding the General, the direction most of the auto hacks were beating their chests to) and talk with GM's big chief exec, Rick Wagoner, yesterday before his keynote address at CES . So what did we talk about? How about future Zeta products hitting US shores -- like the reports we've heard of GM greenlighting an El Camino ute and a wagon for Pontiac under the G8 nameplate . Namely we were wondering about the rumors we've heard that if Pontiac builds a wagon and a ute, the wagon will only come with a V6 engine while the ute would come in both V6 and V8 levels. Our back-and-forth with His Slickness after the jump. Rick, you've got the G8 coming and hitting shores now, Camaro coming next year -- what other options...

One of us spent the past two days on the 'merican West Coast, in a little hamlet by the Pacific Ocean the locals call Los Angeles. There, we snuck into an exclusive "lifestyle" blogger sit-down held by the General of Motors. While normally not our cup...
