Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Today we've got a car that I knew I'd find in Alameda someday: a Chrysler E Body! Now, these things have become totemic worship objects for Baby Boomers who remember when they had hair, virility, optimism, etc., so just about all of them now spend their days locked in garages in between cruise nights and car shows, much like the equally seldom-seen first-gen GM F Bodies. I've seen this Sub Lime '70 around for years, but never parked on the street… until now! I found this car on the same block as a few other DOTS honorees, including the '57 Cadillac , the VW Transporter Syncro , and a couple you haven't seen yet. Hemi blah blah blah, that's all you hear about when folks talk about the '70 Challenger's engine choices. If you watched yesterday's episode of Top Gear — specifically, the American muscle challenge you may have noticed a rather cherry vintage R/T Challenger in the background. The car belongs to Mark, an Englishman with a penchant for vintage Mopar muscle and a willingness to share the car with others. In addition to the most recent episode of Top Gear , Mark's Challenger was also featured in Motor Trend alongside the new 2008 Dodge Challenger SRT8 . "Big Daddy" Don Garlits is kind of a big deal when it comes to drag racing, having birthed the rear-engine top fuel dragster, and being the first in the NHRA to cross the quarter-mile lights at 170, 180, 200, 240, 250, 260, and 270 MPH, so when he buys a Dodge Challenger Drag Pack , you know it's got to be good. This Drag Pack Challenger is the third off the production line and signed right on its composite hood by Gartlits, claiming it as his own, along with everything else packed into the car like racing seats, polycarbonate door windows, manual rack-and-pinion steering, fuel cell and factory roll cage along with a stinky race-modified engine. Here's some hotness bound for the endless halls of SEMA — a pair of heavily massaged widebody Dodge Challenger s by Classic Design Concepts. Outside, the Challenger s get shaker hoods, a very snazzy wire mesh grille, and extra wide composite fenders which are particularly slick in the back, presenting a bulged-out version of the famous billboard side stripes. Under those fenders are 10-inch wide tires in the front and 11.5 inchers out back, stopped by massive Baer brakes. Those big brakes will be put to good use as both Challengers get supercharged, with a Vortech in the black version and the Procharger in the white. Think 560 HP; now that's a proper power-to-weight ratio. Sweet gods of motoring modification, is nothing holy? Hotchkis will be bringing a pair of heavily modified Dodge Challengers to this year's SEMA show in Vegas. We've no problem with the modded 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT8 they're towing to the show. No, our problem is with the other — a 1970 T/A 340 Six-Pack. We don't have much info on the new Challenger, but we do know the paint scheme will match the vintage one shown — which is not an original 340 Six Pack, thankfully. And the paint is just the beginning of the modifications. Under the skin, the '70 gets custom upper A-arms riding on relocated pickup points, aluminum tie rods, struts with Heim joints, two-inch-drop springs, front and rear way bars, Flowmaster exhaust and Stoptech brakes hiding behind Forgeline wheels riding on a set of Yokohamas. All of it can go back to stock, and we suspect it probably handles a helluva lot better than the wet noodle it started as, but some things should just go undone...

You remember that recent Dodge statement basically confirming there would not be a Dodge Challenger Convertible ? Who cares if Dodge won't bring it, because it's just opening the doors for aftermarket converters like Coach Builders Ltd. , bringing their interpretation of a drop-top Mopar pony to the SEMA show in Vegas next month. What comes to mind when you think of the color orange? No, besides pumpkins. That's right, the Dodge Challenger ! Now, you can combine the two and make a Challenger-o-lantern, just in time for Halloween. We know, the example provided by Dodge doesn't exactly show off their pumpkin chopping skills, but they've at least included a stencil for you to try it yourself. We anticipate the Dodge Challenger will have a substantial showing at this years SEMA show, and if these two entries from Mr. Norm are any indication, its going to be a big horsepower show. The "Super Challenger" and "Super Cuda" are a pair of heavily modified Challengers sporting 900 HP from Kenne Bell supercharged V8s in addition to their snappy styling and big wheels. Considering the heft of the Challenger is one of its biggest problems, 900 HP seems a good starting point for upgrades. The production program for both won't start with 900 horses. Instead, they'll start at a base model, complemented by several stages with upscale performance and accessories. In addition, each of the parts and add-ons featured on the Mr. Norm's Super Challenger will be available to enthusiasts separately. So feel free to mix and match at your pleasure. The war between Detroit's muscle car threesome may have just begun, but as you can see in this newest episode of Torque.TV 's Head-2-Head series, it's already a shooting war. Like we saw in the preview clip , this face-off pits a 725 HP Mustang GT500 against a 725 HP Challenger SRT8 in a good ol' tire-smokin' fossil-fuel-burnin' good time. Who will come out on top? After seeing Top Gear UK boys hitting the streets of Reno in a Cadillac CTS-V , Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Corvette ZR1 , we now know where they were headed — the Bonneville Salt Flats. This mess of pictures pretty much confirm that TGUK will be pushing the cars to their terminal velocity while making quips about Mormons and polygamy — and all while — umm — wearing baseball caps? Sure, whatever floats their British boats. It also looks like James May has taken a liking to a polished-up Shelby Cobra that was at the flats as well. We're stoked that Chrysler is offering a Dodge Challenger Drag Pak turn-key racer, but how exactly do you go about ordering one from your local Dodge dealer? Since these mighty Mopars are going to be limited production, you gotta prove you're worthy. First, you're required to submit your application in writing to a dealer, who will then fax it to Mopar Motorsports' secret lair. Keep in mind that this is all first-come first-served, so you probably want to get a fax confirmation to make sure your paperwork went through. But what qualifications will buyers have to meet? It's recommended that potential buyers have "a current Competition License or sanctioning body affiliation prior to ordering their vehicle." So, n00bs need not apply. That's because Mopar wants to put their best foot forward with the Drag Challenger. They've even specified that the "buyer is encouraged to have the Challenger Drag Pak vehicle in competition within a reasonable amount...

The Mopar Underground folks are prepping a 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T for unveiling at this year's SEMA show. They've got a plan: make the car as long and lean as possible, with inspiration from the 1970 Challenger T/A; what they don't have is a name. The folks at Automobile are helping out by photographing the build process and offering up commenting space for suggestions. We reported last year that the next battle in the Muscle Car Wars (patent still pending) might play out on the oval tracks of Nascar's Busch Series. We were only partially right, as testing of the Nationwide Series (formerly Busch Series Leagues) 2009 Car of Tomorrow began yesterday at Richmond International Raceway. Dodge showed up at the test with their new Dodge Challenger — with more than a mere sticker set for the headlights and grille. Thanks to NASCAR's decision to relax a-pillar-and-forward "manufacturer identity" modifications there's actually a Challenger inset grille and what appears to be raised hood areas — just like the real car! Shoot, it's the closest thing we've seen to a realistic-looking stock car out of a NASCAR league in decades. Unfortunately, they're looking to be the only muscle car on the track as Ford'll be running a Taurus (weird decision, we know) rather than a Mustang, Chevy will be running a we-don't-know...

The old-school shifter gurus at Hurst are back in the custom vehicle business, choosing the 2009 Dodge Challenger as their latest canvas. The Hurst/Hemi Challenger is scheduled to make its debut at the 2008 SEMA show in Vegas, after which it's expected in dealerships during the first part of next year. A Hurst shifter is included, of course, along with branded wheels, requisite gold stripes and "H" logos. The rest of the package consists of mods in your choice of four different stages of tune, topping out with a 500+ HP blower-equipped version.
