Sure, you want to slap one of those "BIODIESEL - NO WAR NEEDED" stickers on your ride, but you don't want a W123 Mercedes-Benz like everyone else. What to do? Here's one idea: take $9,950, head to Texas, and hand your money to the seller of this 1986 205 XRD. You won't feel like a French James Bond in a 205 GTI, but you'll get 1978 Porsche Sebring green paint and MI16 wheels, on possibly the only 205 XRD on the continent. Thanks to KC Surge for the tip! Some of us spent a large portion of our youth preparing for the coming apocalypse. No, not in the creepy “our mom was Sarah Connor” sense, but in the totally normal and respectable type of advanced weapons and survival training that everyone does when they’re 12, right? Understandably this has created a significantly high level of anticipation for the inevitable alien invasion / nuclear winter / ape takeover. And now, we’ve found the perfect survival vehicle. It’s the Mitsubishi Racing Lancer equipped with a 260 HP, 640 lb.-ft. diesel engine. galleryPost('mitsubishiracinglancer', 8, 'Mitsubishi Racing Lancer'); While some people think the Best Post-Apocalyptic Survival Vehicles should be heavily armored and able to carry essentials for long periods of autonomy, we plan to set up camp in a permanent location and need a vehicle capable of covering long distances for supply foraging while being able to outrun and outmaneuver the hordes of less prepared, cannibalistic survivors...

Some American truck owners crossing the border for cheap fuel have had their trucks confiscated, according to PickupTrucks.com . While it's completely legal to enter Mexico and fill up your truck with the Mexican diesel, which is often more than $2.00 cheaper per gallon, drivers run afoul of the country's laws if they put any in an auxiliary tank. An official told PickupTrucks.com the law was created to prevent the transportation of large amounts of fuel over international bridges in vehicles not properly equipped for such duty. Anyone busted filling an extra tank will have to wait at least four days to get their truck back, in addition to paying a fine. Thankfully, the law doesn't apply to transporting cases of cheap Mexican tequila. [ PickupTrucks.com , Photo: Getty/AFP]

It's strongly rumored the diesel version of the Audi TT could find its way stateside. With that in mind, the boys over at Popular Mechanics packed their bags and boarded a midnight plane to Blighty to try one out. In a cable back to their New York HQ, they report the oil-burning 2008 Audi TT 2.0 TDI is smooth, refined and makes overtaking easy as a wiggle of your big toe. Exclusively available in the UK with a 6-speed manual, they calculated their average fuel economy during a mix of city and highway driving to be 39.1 MPG (US). That's while making 258 lb-ft and reaching a top speed of 140 MPH, mind you. Please, god of cars, bring us this beautiful torque-heavy 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Please! galleryPost('pmttdiesel', 8, 'Audi TT TDI'); [ Popular Mechanics ]

Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Today's car is one I see frequently, and I've spent months wrestling with an internal debate over its eligibility for this series; sure, it's a quarter-century old and a great-looking car, but probably 98% of the diesel W123s ever sold are still on the road today and it's a stretch to call this one a survivor . Eventually, the rarity of the early-80s coupes in North America sold me; back in the early 80s, what self-respecting wealthy car buyer craved the sportiness of a big Benz coupe, yet was willing to put up with the 120 horsepower of a rattly, smoky diesel? OK, the OM617 was actually quiet, didn't smoke, and was probably the most reliable automobile engine ever made, but Americans who look for stolid reliability tend to want four doors. I'm not sure this is actually an '82; it could be as recent as 1985. The feds didn't...

We're constantly harping on American companies for not bringing over their European cars, but with news that Ford is doing just that , the question has new immediacy. The British Motor Show is a good place to start. The show will witness the debut of the Ford Focus RS , which speaks to a rally heritage we don't have but sorely need. Maybe it's the technology, or maybe we just want the diesel versions of cars we already have. Given how long we've lusted after Mondeos and notchbacked Insignias , we're almost at a loss to think of what we'd want first. That's where you can help. What European cars do we need and want most? We'll count the American arms of European car companies to expand the field a bit.

Remember when we had that Euro-spec Honda Civic i-CTDi ? What a magical time of diesel hooning and crazy-high fuel economy that was. Leave it to Honda to make us ache for their diesely-Civic even harder now that they've dressed up the Italian-market version with Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade-inspired goodies. The best Civic in the world that you can't buy in the US has donned an aggressive front clip, fancy 18" wheels, graphite accents and apparently some Honda factory motorcycle racer we don't know. Oh Honda, why do you torment us so!? galleryPost('firebladecivic', 3, 'A Honda We Would Be Caught Alive In'); [ Carscoop ]

Mike Ward, CEO of Tiger Truck LLC thinks his Chinese-designed, Oklahoma-built Tiger Champ truck that returns about 37 MPG from its Caterpillar-sourced three-cylinder diesel engine is just what Oklahome farmers need. With a retail price of about $13,000, the price point is certainly right. So why isn't the nation signing up for the Tiger Champ and its sister truck, the Tiger Star? Both trucks are slow. Neither pickup is legal outside of Oklahoma to drive on public roads. Oh, and neither meets federal safety standards. Good thing Ward's got friends in high places. The Champ and its smaller brother, the Tiger Star, were both designed by China-based Chongqing Changan, and are shipped to Oklahoma as partial knockdown kits. Tiger sources the remaining parts stateside and completes assembly at a facility in Poteau, OK, with the capacity to build about 35 units a day. Tiger plans to skirt the " collapsing Chinese vehicle " problem by certifying the Champ as legal only for off...

Ford is out and about testing the 2009.5 Ford F-150 Diesel , this time with sheetmetal more suiting to the 2009 model year. As proof that this is the new diesel-powered F-150, the photographers from KGP managed to snap pictures of the "DIESEL FUEL ONLY" strip over the gauge cluster, the telltale slotted/sideways exhaust tips and, most importantly, the first shots of the tank access for the urea. We'd also point out the seven-lug wheels, indicative of the heavy duty payload package. Performance targets for the 4.4-liter diesel V8 and the full spy report below the jump. galleryPost('10dief150spy', 6, 'Unscrew The Blue Cap If You Need To Take A Leak'); According to KGP, the new engine should be capable of a 9% increase in power and a 15% increase in torque relative to the 5.4-liter gas V8. According to this leaked report , the gas V8 should be capable of 320 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Jalopnik Snap Math Judgment: Doing the math, this would put the diesel V8 at...

We spotted a manufacturer-plated Chevrolet LUV pickup cruising around town a month ago on our way to our brother's graduation from Oakland University, but didn't think much of it because frankly, a re-badged Isuzu D-MAX (or Chevy Colorado depending on how you look at it) doesn't really get us going. That is until we took a closer look at the shots last night and noticed that it was a diesel -powered Chevy LUV truck. My, my, my — is GM perhaps looking to create a competitor for the Mahindra Scorpio / Appalachian / Whatever pickup? Maybe some oil-slicked Thai truck action? galleryPost('ChevroletLUVSpy', 6, 'The Chevy LUV Truck Seeks To Please Your Wallet, Not Your Booty'); Probably not. The problem with the engine is it doesn't meet any emissions requirements for the US market. But what's funny is that this is exactly what the market is looking for. How great would a light-duty 30 MPG+ diesel pickup be in this market? Though GM engineers are probably...

Hearing our pleas, we're being told BMW will be bringing the diesel 3-series to the US in the coming months. As proof, we've got shots from our spy friends at KGP of the oil-burning BMW doing some final testing on American soil as well shots of it at the green-handled pump. The 2009 BMW 335d should feature a slightly lower level of performance compared to the European turbodiesel, but that still means 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. This should result in a 0-to-60 MPH time of around 6.2 seconds while getting a rumored 23 MPG city / 33 MPG highway. Full spy report below the jump. galleryPost('09bmw335dfp', 5, 'Torque Is Cheap'); Spy Report BMW is in the midst of its final testing for the U.S.-spec 335d—the first diesel-powered Bimmer to be sold in North America. The introduction of the 335d will coincide with the launch of facelifted sheetmetal destined for the entire 3-series lineup. Due to e-mission restrictions, the U.S. version of the 335d will reportedly...

A friend of AutoFiends managed to catch a 2009 Volvo XC60 camo'd up and wearing something peculiar in Hollywood, which is actually quite normal — for a fashionista. Unlike the XC60 one of our readers spied in Beverly Hills, this one was wearing a little badge that proclaims "Diesel Fuel Only." That's a little obvious, isn't it? Although when the XC60 launched in the US we explicitly asked if diesels would find their way to the US market and we were told "no diesels in our market for XC60," so we're assuming either a PR un-truth (maybe) or testing in the hot air out west (probably). galleryPost('xc60dies1', 3, 'Is That Daniel Baldwin?'); Certainly, this could just be a great piece of misdirection (what if it's a hybrid under there?) but more than likely it's just Volvo doing some testing in the harsh Beverly Hills climate. But given the increase in gas prices offering up a five-cylinder diesel in the Euro model no longer seems...

The combination of a fuel-sipping diesel engine with plug-in hybrid technology is something that hasn't really been utilized — until now. This is the Volkswagen Golf Twin Drive Concept, and it looks even more promising than VW's late Golf TDI Hybrid from Geneva . Evidently, the Twin Drive can be run in electric-only mode for a range of up to 30 miles using an 82 HP electric motor. But, there's also a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel that makes 122 HP which can take over once the batteries have been drained. When the two powerplants combine, you become Captain Planet have a parallel hybrid with about 174 HP. The range is aided even further by regenerative braking to charge the batteries, and start-stop technology that shuts the engine off when idling in traffic. But is all of this just a techno' showcase? Or will it actually be made available for normal people to save fuel with? galleryPost('golftwindrive', 6, 'Volkswagen Golf Twin Drive Concept'); Well, Volkswagen...

Reports that the US market will be getting the new diesel BMW 3-series have gained additional credibility with this 2009 BMW 335d sedan spotted testing on our shores. It's no secret that modern European turbo diesels are wonders of efficiency and low-end torque; the BMW oilburner is no different, producing 425 lb-ft of torque at just 1,750 RPM. But there's more than just diesel fuel being splashed around. To meet U.S. emissions, the engine will also be injecting urea. Yep, pee. Sort of... Urea is actually a compound found in mammal urine. Utilizing a method that's been put to use on Mercedes' Bluetec models, BMW will be using urea to scrub particulate matter from the exhaust. The urea will be stored on-board in a separate tank, and your friendly BMW service department will take care of refilling it for you. In a completely unrelated story, BMW dealership service departments are now serving St. Pauli Girl in the break room. [ autofiends via BimmerFile ]
