For better or worse, dragons have become something of a meme around here. Well, it looks like they're here to stay, with Spense delivering a comment in the BMW Hearts Diesel piece that seriously had the entire staff in fits here in the Cobo Hall press room. Check it out after the jump. Spence: That is seriously cute. Diesels are for dragons kinda like Sarah Silverman is for straight guys. She's kinda funny looking and probably a little psycho, but you still wanna [EXPLETIVE REDACTED] her. Wow. Detroit Auto Show: BMW Hearts Diesel

Look what was wrapped around our complimentary Wall Street Journal at the Detroit Auto Show today: a love letter written by BMW to diesel. Full text and a big picture after the jump. Diesel, it's not your fault Many years ago, you were created with the best intentions. The weight of the world's needs were put on you. And you served a purpose - you got people from point A to point B. But you were loud. You were smoky. And let's face it, you stunk. No one was able to harness your power. No one was able to make you truly fuel-efficient. No one was able to reduce your emissions. Until now. Introducing BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance. Now you can go more than 500 miles on a single tank. Now you can emit less CO2 than any other diesel in your class. Now you're our most powerful, cleanest-burning six-cylinder diesel ever. And now you're coming to America. America's first diesel with a variable twin-turbo inline-six engine. Finally, America will learn why over 60...

Honda have just announced that their new i-DTEC will debut in North America in a 2009 Acura model. The engine will follow in a Honda the following year. No specific figures were given, but the company claims this diesel with be 25-30% more efficient than an equivalent gasoline-powered unit.

The 2009 Honda Pilot shares a platform with the '07 Acura MDX, starting at a lower price, with simpler features, seating 8 people. It also features a new Variable Cylinder Management system, which means the engine, can run on 6, 4 or 3 cylinders. The looks draw heavily on classic American SUV design themes, but improve upon them in a clean, contemporary way. Just look at the area behind the C-pillars for instance; it resembles what the Jeep Liberty should have looked like. Inside, the central instrument binnacle is highlighted by a clear, lighted cover that certainly looks much better than the shabby black plastic you'll find there on most vehicles.

Aside from adding yet another word to it's name -- it's now known as either the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Vision 320 CTDi Bluetec Freeside Concept, or the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Vision 320 CTDi Blutec Townside Concept, the latter loses off-road pretensions -- the most notable thing to occur at this second official unveiling was the creepy flirting taking place between Dr. Z and Kim Catrall. Seriously, after watching Kim speak of her "admiration" of Dr. Z's "tight package" we had to put up with his promise to "show her around afterwards." Trust us, it sounds creepier in Gerglish. We had to leave when Dr. Z promised to "heat it up in here." If Ray wasn't such a slave driver, we'd be well on our way back to the hotel to take a scalding hot shower. galleryPost('glkexterior', 12, 'Mercedes GLK Vision Freeside Exterior Photos'); galleryPost('glkinterior', 6, 'Mercedes GLK Vision Freeside Interior Photos'...

We've already showed you Mercedes' new mouthful, the 2009 GLK Vison Freestyle 320 CTDi Bluetech Concept . But tonight, Mercedes officially unveiled it at big band extravaganza at MOCAD . galleryPost('glkexterior', 15, 'Mercedes GLK Vision Freeside Exterior Photos'); galleryPost('glkinterior', 9, 'Mercedes GLK Vision Freeside Interior Photos'); galleryPost('glkvisionconcept', 9, 'Mercedes GLK Vision Concept'); Due to the extravagance of the event, we couldn't help but feel that we were experiencing something akin to the last days of the Roman Empire. While a 1920's influenced German brass band played Britney Spears covers , Kim Catrall made a cameo appearance, we drank moderately-priced champagne and Dr. Z delivered a partially incomprehensible accounting of Mercedes' accounts. We don't really understand where the GLK fits into all of this and weren't totally impressed. It looks like a busy, fussy X3 with really...

We already told you that new BMW X6 would feature a diesel mill, and now we get more information on BMW's diesel plans, which includes the introduction of a Diesel X5 xDrive 35d and BMW 335d Diesel 3-series. The new powerplant will apparently be a 265 horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six with twin turbos capable of 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. And it's 50 state legal! More below the jump. Debuting at the Detroit Auto Show, the BMW 335d will achieve 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds with a fuel economy of 23/33 mpg. By comparison, the new X5 with diesel will scoot to 62 mph in approximately 7.2 seconds with fuel economy of 19/25 mpg. To reduce emissions, the new engine features a Urea system (that's pee) with an AdBlue tank system that'll get changed for the first fours years or 50,000 miles by BMW technicians. [ AutoSpies ]
