Hearing our pleas, we're being told BMW will be bringing the diesel 3-series to the US in the coming months. As proof, we've got shots from our spy friends at KGP of the oil-burning BMW doing some final testing on American soil as well shots of it at the green-handled pump. The 2009 BMW 335d should feature a slightly lower level of performance compared to the European turbodiesel, but that still means 265 HP and 425 lb-ft of torque. This should result in a 0-to-60 MPH time of around 6.2 seconds while getting a rumored 23 MPG city / 33 MPG highway. Full spy report below the jump. galleryPost('09bmw335dfp', 5, 'Torque Is Cheap'); Spy Report BMW is in the midst of its final testing for the U.S.-spec 335d—the first diesel-powered Bimmer to be sold in North America. The introduction of the 335d will coincide with the launch of facelifted sheetmetal destined for the entire 3-series lineup. Due to e-mission restrictions, the U.S. version of the 335d will reportedly...

Reports that the US market will be getting the new diesel BMW 3-series have gained additional credibility with this 2009 BMW 335d sedan spotted testing on our shores. It's no secret that modern European turbo diesels are wonders of efficiency and low-end torque; the BMW oilburner is no different, producing 425 lb-ft of torque at just 1,750 RPM. But there's more than just diesel fuel being splashed around. To meet U.S. emissions, the engine will also be injecting urea. Yep, pee. Sort of... Urea is actually a compound found in mammal urine. Utilizing a method that's been put to use on Mercedes' Bluetec models, BMW will be using urea to scrub particulate matter from the exhaust. The urea will be stored on-board in a separate tank, and your friendly BMW service department will take care of refilling it for you. In a completely unrelated story, BMW dealership service departments are now serving St. Pauli Girl in the break room. [ autofiends via BimmerFile ]

The LUMMA CLR X530 combines three of our favorite things: white paint, the current X5 and a tuned diesel engine. The 3L turbo diesel makes 470lb/ft of torque and 330bhp thanks to an amped-up turbo and remapped chip. Also present is the de rigueur performance exhaust, which makes us fantasize about huge plumes of black smoke clouding up the crisp white bodywork. Mmmmmm, diesel. galleryPost('Lummax5', 6, 'LUMMA CLR X530'); As we're sure you've noticed by now LUMMA have also seen fit to include an extravagant but somehow decent looking body kit and white wheels. A host of other minor interior and exterior modifications rounds out the package. We'd take ours without the visual modifications, using it as a combination sleeper / tower, hauling trailers full of dirt bikes down the Autobahn at three figure speeds.

newVideoPlayer("dieselE30_burnout.flv", 463, 387,""); The E30 BMW 3-series is a cult favorite, but most people think of the petrol-powered 325is or M3 versions when they think of performance. Well not these guys. This is evidence that a turbo diesel E30 can rock just as hard; when you do burnouts, you get tire smoke and black exhaust! The horror-flick style editing makes the boosted oil-burners seem downright scary. [ YouTube ]

We've been saying for years the only efficient hybrid with current technology is one mated to a diesel engine, and now it looks like another automaker is jumping into the conceptual fray. Our little news yesterday on the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics X5 -- translated from Bruce, that appears to be an X5 outfitted with a 2.0-liter twin turbo common rail diesel mild hybrid (wow, that's a mouthful, ain't it?) -- appears to be wholly true. BMW will be revealing this little concept in environmentally friendly CUV-ing at the Geneva Motor Show next month and they've now seen fit to reveal the rest of their press shots and the full press release, which we've got below the jump. Feel free to read through it if you're suffering from a strong desire to fall back into bed. For now, here's the gist of it -- hybrid + diesel + BMW = Over 100 HP per liter (total of 204 HP), 295 lb-ft of torque between 2000 and 2500 RPM. Exciting, isn't it? galleryPost('BMWVisionX5Geneva'...

Something fishy just leaked onto the Bimmer-centric site edBMW . It's a supposedly leaked document that compares the freshly unveiled BMW X6 , Porsche Cayenne, and Range Rover Sport head to head, oh yeah, and also provides info on two diesel variants. The comparo makes it look like the new X6 is a gift from the acceleration gods, dutifully spanking both competitors (which strangely do not include the Audi Q7) in both acceleration and fuel consumption. We'll take that with a grain of salt and wait for independent testing first. It's that part about two different diesels that's interesting though. galleryPost('bmwx6exterior', 6, 'BMW X6 at Detroit'); While we were fully aware there was to be a diesel option for the almost a coupe, not quite an SUV, we didn't know what it would be, nor that there would be two options. The info shows contradictory elements though. Two different power outputs for their 3.0 liter diesel - 235 hp and 286 hp. The lower power...

For better or worse, dragons have become something of a meme around here. Well, it looks like they're here to stay, with Spense delivering a comment in the BMW Hearts Diesel piece that seriously had the entire staff in fits here in the Cobo Hall press room. Check it out after the jump. Spence: That is seriously cute. Diesels are for dragons kinda like Sarah Silverman is for straight guys. She's kinda funny looking and probably a little psycho, but you still wanna [EXPLETIVE REDACTED] her. Wow. Detroit Auto Show: BMW Hearts Diesel

Look what was wrapped around our complimentary Wall Street Journal at the Detroit Auto Show today: a love letter written by BMW to diesel. Full text and a big picture after the jump. Diesel, it's not your fault Many years ago, you were created with the best intentions. The weight of the world's needs were put on you. And you served a purpose - you got people from point A to point B. But you were loud. You were smoky. And let's face it, you stunk. No one was able to harness your power. No one was able to make you truly fuel-efficient. No one was able to reduce your emissions. Until now. Introducing BMW Advanced Diesel with BluePerformance. Now you can go more than 500 miles on a single tank. Now you can emit less CO2 than any other diesel in your class. Now you're our most powerful, cleanest-burning six-cylinder diesel ever. And now you're coming to America. America's first diesel with a variable twin-turbo inline-six engine. Finally, America will learn why over 60...

We already told you that new BMW X6 would feature a diesel mill, and now we get more information on BMW's diesel plans, which includes the introduction of a Diesel X5 xDrive 35d and BMW 335d Diesel 3-series. The new powerplant will apparently be a 265 horsepower 3.0-liter inline-six with twin turbos capable of 425 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. And it's 50 state legal! More below the jump. Debuting at the Detroit Auto Show, the BMW 335d will achieve 0-62 mph in 6.2 seconds with a fuel economy of 23/33 mpg. By comparison, the new X5 with diesel will scoot to 62 mph in approximately 7.2 seconds with fuel economy of 19/25 mpg. To reduce emissions, the new engine features a Urea system (that's pee) with an AdBlue tank system that'll get changed for the first fours years or 50,000 miles by BMW technicians. [ AutoSpies ]

I'll try and keep this short: 3.0-liter I-6 good for 286 HP, 427 lb-ft of twist and a combined cycle of 35 mpg. I really can't think of much else to say. OK, fine -- the 3.0-liter petrol plant in the 335i and 535i makes a bit more power (officially 300, though actual output is closer to 330 hp), much less torque (300 lb-ft) and gets a combined 20 mpg downhill. BMW 's keeping its yap shut about which new world car (or perhaps cars...) is going to get the blown oil burner, but Ward's Auto is guessing that we'll be seeing both the 335d and 535d before too long. And maybe even a 635d . We're all for those, for sure, but Jalopnik would very much like to see a 135d. Preferably in wagon or shooting brake form. And the 535d Touring, too. As for the when, we're hearing late 2008. [ wardsauto.com ]
