The Detroit News is reporting group vice president and general manager for Toyota of the Americas, Bob Carter, has confirmed the 2010 Toyota Prius will be debuting at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and will be joined by a uniquely styled and appointed version for Lexus. The Prius was set to move upmarket relative to its former iterations, but with a Lexus version now on the way, Toyota's own marketplace may be getting crowded. But the bigger story is how this news makes things far more interesting for January's Detroit Auto Show. galleryPost('ToyotaPriusSpy', 6, '2010 Toyota Prius Out Testing'); Jalopnik Snap Jugdement : Considering we'll be seeing two all-new dedicated hybrids from Toyota, the formal debut of the 2010 Honda hybrid , who knows what from Nissan , and with the first fully-formed Chevy Volt revealed just a couple months earlier, the 2009 Detroit Auto Show is setting up to be a serious, next-gen hybrid battle royal. More interesting to us, contrary to...

Saturn's lawyers are at it again -- this time they are declaring a world's first. The Saturn Vue Green Line 2 Mode is the world's first front-wheel-drive compact hybrid SUV in the world, or so they say. The obvious key feature is the two-mode hybrid technology capable of increasing fuel economy by 50 percent compared to the non-hybrid V6 Vue. A 500 mile driving range also sounds pretty nice, at least on paper. The Vue Green Line 2 Mode features a 3.6-liter VVT V6 engine that can go 0-60 in 7.3 seconds. Expect this SUV to hit the dealer floor in late 2008. galleryPost('saturnvue2modeext', 6, 'Saturn Vue 2 Mode Exterior'); galleryPost('saturnvue2modeint', 6, 'Saturn Vue 2 Mode Interior'); galleryPost('saturnvue2modepress', 8, 'Saturn Vue 2-Mode Hybrid');

It looks like BMW is going to offer its first hybrid powertrain in the new X6 Sport Activity Vehicle. It's likely that sales of the X6 hybrid will begin in 2009. The new X-Drive system should come in handy distributing the massive torque the electric motors are sure to develop to whichever wheel has the most grip. [ Via eGM CarTech ]

In a mere two years Saturn will make its Vue Plug-In Hybrid available for masses. Wait for it, wait for it, yes, this hybrid will plug into the standard 110V household electrical outlet and connect to the car at the front fender, utilizing an adapted two-mode hybrid system from GM. The battery will fully recharge in four to five hours. In addition to the rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, the Plug-In Hybrid will also feature GM's 3.6-liter V6 VVT engine. Even though it does contain a V6 engine, the Plug-In Hybrid will be capable of electric-only propulsion of 10 miles or so at low speeds according to the early testing. I would hate to see what this would do to household electronics. I have problems running the toaster and the dryer at the same time and who knows what would happen if a car was plugged into the mix. galleryPost('saturnvueplugin', 4, 'Saturn Vue Plug-In Hybrid Live Shots');

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/environment/Fisker_Karma_Plug_In_Hybrid_only_80K_125_mph_top_speed'; The big news today is the Fisker Karma Luxury Hybrid , which is going to come at $80,000 and deliver luxury style, GT performance and eco-friendliness. And this isn't a flight of fancy. This is a production model that will be produced in the fourth quarter of 2009 with venture capital funding by Kleiner Perkins, who made big investments in Netscape and Google at the right time that later turned into big victories. A true lithium-ion plug-in hybrid, the electrical system is good for 50 miles of electric-only driving in stealth mode. Otherwise, the second mode of the hybrid system involves a performance-oriented four cylinder engine. The company currently puts the performance at 5.8 seconds 0-60 mph with a top speed of 125 mph (continuous). galleryPost('FiskerKarmaDetroitExt', 12, 'Fisker Karma Hybrid Exterior'); galleryPost('fiskerkarmainterior', 12, 'Fisker...

The embargo for the Fisker Karma Luxury Hybrid from coachbuilder Fisker (responsible for questionably revised european luxury models ) was broken two days ago and then unbroken by some concerned PR people and now it appears that AutoBlog.it has broken the embargo again! Molto Bene! The Karma Hybrid will be powered by the Quantum Technologies-sourced Q-DRIVE System (a series hybrid with a small gas engine running to generate power for lithium ion battery packs). This is good for a claimed 0-60 mph time of six seconds and a top speed of 125 mph and a range of 50 miles on batteries alone. galleryPost('FiskerKarmabreak', 6, 'Fisker Karma Premium Hybrid');

We don't have many details as Wes, our intrepid road trip warrior, doesn't have internet access on the floor at the moment, but we've just been told Smart has unveiled a micro-hybrid drive with stop-start technology. It cuts the engine below 5mph when braking and it gets 58 MPG. We'll have more from the Detroit Auto Show on this new but not at all startling development when we get more. Update: Well that's about all there is to report. Smart are calling the system Micro Hybrid Drive, but it's basically just a system that cuts the engine while the vehicle is at a standstill or when it's below 5mph while braking. Smart claim this improves urban fuel economy by 30%. No definitive commitment to selling Smart ForTwo's equipped with Micro Hybrid Drive in the US was made, but was heavily hinted at it. galleryPost('smartstop', 9, 'Smart Micro Hybrid - feat Nardelli and Dieter!');

Saturn has gone and made its Vue Hybrid even more hybrid-tastic. Now equipped with GM's advanced two-mode hybrid technology, the new 2009 Saturn Vue Green Line 2 Mode Hybrid promises a fifty percent increase in fuel mileage over the standard V6 model. All of that efficiency comes from a 3.6L V6 equipped with VVT and direct injection and not one, but two 55 kW electric motors integrated into the transmission. Those motors provide assist at different vehicle speeds in order to minimize fuel consumption. Pretty clever, eh? Our only problem with this whole thing is the page long name. We'll be digging around in the new Saturn starting Sunday and you can follow at our Detroit Auto Show tag page.
