The Detroit News is reporting group vice president and general manager for Toyota of the Americas, Bob Carter, has confirmed the 2010 Toyota Prius will be debuting at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and will be joined by a uniquely styled and appointed version for Lexus. The Prius was set to move upmarket relative to its former iterations, but with a Lexus version now on the way, Toyota's own marketplace may be getting crowded. But the bigger story is how this news makes things far more interesting for January's Detroit Auto Show. galleryPost('ToyotaPriusSpy', 6, '2010 Toyota Prius Out Testing'); Jalopnik Snap Jugdement : Considering we'll be seeing two all-new dedicated hybrids from Toyota, the formal debut of the 2010 Honda hybrid , who knows what from Nissan , and with the first fully-formed Chevy Volt revealed just a couple months earlier, the 2009 Detroit Auto Show is setting up to be a serious, next-gen hybrid battle royal. More interesting to us, contrary to...

Having just finished up the major auto shows, it's probably not a bad time to ask if America's auto industry is headed in the right direction. As auto enthusiasts we like the idea of ass-kicking, high-output RWD rides like the 2009 Dodge Challenger , 2010 Camaro and Pontiac G8 GXP as much, if not more, than the next guy. But will they sell? A weakening economy, higher gas prices and a general perception that it's cool to be green sort of runs counter to the aims of all these vehicles. What are the foreign automakers doing? Hyundai has the Genesis Coupe , which promises great performance with a V6 at a lower cost. Subaru has come out with another capable Forester while Ford will soon be selling the seemingly contradictory Ford Flex and Transit Connect . It's "A New Day" at Chrysler. Or is it? Are the "Big 3" seeing what the market wants and delivering, or grasping at straws? Quo Vadimus? Where are we going?

newVideoPlayer("ZR1intw2.flv", 475, 376,"");Our intrepid videographer spent some time listening to Harlan Charles, the Project Manager at GM behind the 2009 Corvette ZR1 talks about his demon ride. During the conversation he manages to fit in as many refs to other products as possible. Count along: Ferrari 599, Audi R8, Corvette Z06, previous gen ZR1. He then goes on to hint inadvertently that the next C6 special edition could involve an environmental twist, but quickly retreats from the statement. Hybrid Vette anyone? Probably E85 Vette first. galleryPost('09CorvetteZR1Detroit', 6, 'Corvette ZR1 Live');

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Detroit_Auto_Show_600_HP_2009_Corvette_ZR1_Revealed_Live'; Oh yeah, that's it baby, that's it -- work it girl! Work -- oh wait, something's not right. We know why -- that's not a model up there. Nope, it's the 2009 Corvette ZR1 -- unveiled here at the GM Style event tonight for it's first ever public unveiling. For a moment we thought maybe it was just some insanely beautiful woman. Also, we thought we were a dragon. Shoot -- wrong on both counts. Still some sexy metal -- and an amazingly sexy engine. Click the link if you've been living in a cave bereft of any and all automotive news and need to know more about Chevy's new super-Corvette. More pics after the jump.

And yes, to clear up any questions, that is Kid Rock behind the ZR1 and yes, that is Jeff Gordon driving it down the runway. But, what truly made the evening amazing was none other than Run of Run D.M.C. jumping out on stage to bust some rhymes -- or whatever it is them thar...

Who knew? Seriously -- we're here at the GM Style event and although the place is chock full of pretty people and faux hipsters -- it's unfortunately seemingly rather bereft of the "cars" at the moment. But for a site like Jalopnik , cars are the stars and supposedly we'll be seeing a very special one tonight -- it's the 600+ HP 2009 Corvette ZR1 -- and we're absolutely tingling with excitement and anticipation. So, keep checking back this evening and we'll keep you up-to-date on our first sighting of GM's super-duper car. For the moment be content with a car-star -- GM's Rick Wagoner. He looks totally hawt tonight, OMG!

We heard an interesting comment from a PR staffer from the General last week that made us kind of wonder about whether GM's Chevy brand would be sticking to the ZR1 name reported by MotorTrend 's Todd "Motor City Blogman" Lassa a couple of months ago. After I mentioned how I'm eagerly anticipating the ZR1's debut at the Detroit Auto Show in January I heard a quickly silenced laugh and the comment "If they ever end up sticking to one name." That suspicious comment combined with the very blue-colored engine cowl shots of the Corvette Blue Devil ZR1 SS Z07 we posted last night make us believe maybe the name really is in flux. We guess we'll have to wait and see if maybe this whole "ZR1" thing is nothing but "chasing bloggers' stories." All we know is those engine shots from last night are still up and no shock troopers banged the door down so we think we're in the clear.
