Here's a whopper of a story if it ends up being true: Autoweek is reporting General Motors has placed the next-generation C7 Corvette program on indefinite hold due to the company's shaky financial situation. Sources within GM are saying the program has been shelved for now with no specific timetable for release. This is not to say the 'Vette is dead, only that GM's management has no clearly defined direction for the car. With the pressure from 2020 CAFE requirements and with coffers running dry, there are other more important programs to tend to. Autoweek goes on to look into their crystal ball and imagine a time when the C7 will actually bow as early as 2014 — yikes. Unfortunately, this doesn't sound terribly far-fetched to us. Considering the madness happening in Detroit these days, this kind of thing has to be expected, but these kinds of rumors always come as a shock. We love the current Corvette, but that's a long time to wait for the next iteration....

From the "now you know it's bad" files, the Corvette assembly line in Bowling Green, KY will shut down for the week of October 6, then restart at a reduced line speed of 15 cars per hour, down from 18.5 now. Automotive News claims the stoppage will be the first inventory-related closure of the line since 1995, and could result in the layoff of as many as 75 workers. GM's current "employee pricing for everyone" event includes the Vette for the first time, and has been credited with rapidly shrinking inventories, but the company is concerned about continued market contraction. What? Incentives don't solve the problem for good? Hogwash. [ Automotive News (sub. req.)]

Motor Authority reports that troubled Dutch supercar manufacturer Spyker could be considering a switch to American powerplants. The company currently sources its V8 from Audi and was planning to use VW's 6.0 W12 for its forthcoming D12 super SUV. Due to the weak dollar, the LS7 V8 and new 600bhp Viper engine must look incredibly attractive. It's the time of the year when everyone and their grandmother hands out a "Best Car Ever...of the Year" award. Just over a week ago Motor Trend named their Car of the Year . We already showed you the Car & Driver top ten for '08 and now Automobile Magazine has released their category-less Automobile All-Stars list. However, Automobile's picks reveal that the 2008 model year might not have been an All-Star year for new cars. Seven of the ten cars are carryovers from last year (or was 2007 just that good?).
