  • Chrysler Financial To No Longer Offer Auto Leases... Wait, What? [Industry News]

Yeah, we just heard Chrysler Financial will no longer be offering auto leases. We're just as stunned as everyone else. Hit the jump for the full report and our analysis including what this means for Cerberus-owned GMAC. Follow up on WSJ report that Chrysler will no longer offer auto leases through its lending arm As mentioned at 14:24, Chrysler has started telling dealers it will no longer offer auto leases through its lending arm Chrysler Financial, people familiar with the matter said on Friday. Chrysler is expected to brief dealers formally later today in a conference call, these people said. The move comes as auto makers and their financing units have been piling increasing losses stemming from leases, mainly as a result of falling resale values of trucks, sports-utility vehicles and other less fuel-efficient models that many consumers now shun. Jalopnik Snap Judgment: We'd heard Chrysler Financial was having a tough time as of late what with all of those default loans and oh...
  • Five Reasons Why We're Not Proud To Buy American Cars [Jalopnik Automotive Amerigasm]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/5_Reasons_Why_We_re_Not_Proud_To_Buy_American_Cars'; We just read Car & Driver's recent salute to five vehicles demonstrating all that's right and good with American car companies. Although they're right to be pointing out five great products, the Amerigasmic rah-rah fest left a bad taste in our mouths. Not because it's slightly sycophantic, but merely because it's too easy a list to create. There's just far too few American vehicles that show off the good, and so many that show off the bad. Frankly, we could do a list of the five cars that make us not want to buy American, but we're much more interested in helping our automakers help themselves by pointing out what's ailing them. Without further ado, here's our continuation of this weeks Jalopnik Automotive Amerigasm with the five reasons why we're not proud to buy American cars. 5. Poor Product Planning Think of a 2009 or 2010 model that you're...
  • Chrysler's $2.99 Gas A Good Deal... For Chrysler [I Feel Gassy]

As with other auto media outlets, we've been closely following Chrysler's "Let's Refuel America" program, which is offering three years of $2.99 gas for anyone who buys a Dodge, Jeep or Chrysler vehicle (that isn't a Challenger, Viper, Wrangler, Sprinter Van or other popular vehicles). After a few back-of-the-napkin calculations we're starting to see this is a good deal for Chrysler and, at best, a mediocre rebate for consumers. For one thing, in lieu of other rebates, Chrysler doesn't necessarily have to put all of these expenses on their books right away when it records the sale, which could be a PR boon for the automaker while it tries to buy time for the "New Day" that's coming. But most importantly, the amount of money that a consumer can save is maybe less than most expected. Let's start with an extreme example by choosing the Chrysler Aspen SUV with the large 5.7-Liter V8, which isn't exactly a teetotaler when it comes to gas...
  • Canadian Man Blames Lost Chrysler Data Tape For Irrational Identity Theft Fears [Offbeat News]

A man from the Canadian city-to-the-south-of-Detroit, Windsor, Ontario, is miffed at Chrysler (or more likely Chrysler Financial Canada) for losing a data tape and potentially making the possibility of identity theft happen sooner rather than later. Seems a tape containing the names, addresses and Social Insurance Numbers of some Canuckian Chrysler lessees was lost in transport by UPS. The carrier informed Chrysler of the loss by March 12th, and in turn, letters to folks with compromised identities were sent by March 27th. This chap from Windsor didn't get his note till April 21st and it's rubbing him the wrong way. We're kind of on the fence with this one. Sure the possibility of identity theft is annoying and who hasn't had to deal with a compromised credit card these days, but is this really something to get your panties in a bunch over? First, a data tape was lost. Data, tape. Those with the wherewithal to read them these days probably aren't in the business of trafficking...
