newVideoPlayer("/obamacar.flv", 506, 423,""); It looks like it was a good thing Michigan delivered up the electoral votes to help elect Barack Obama, because he's just made saving the auto industry part two of a three-part plan to address the nation's economic woes. In his first press conference today as President-elect, Obama whipped Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm out on stage, telling the world he hopes to approve the $25 billion in assistance for retooling. In addition, Detroit's new diety claimed he plans to make additional policy options to help U.S. automakers create fuel-efficient cars a "high priority" for the transition team. That's good news for Detroit given today's bad ...err... awful ... news. Although after Wagoner's remarks earlier, we're hoping there will be an industry to save after he's inaugurated. Full remarks from Detroit's personal Jesus below: The news coming out of the auto industry this week reminds...

Our gadget-obsessed brothers at Gizmodo got us the scoop yesterday on Honda's Asimo taking a run at the job of conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra two nights ago. Little did we know Jalopnik friend of friends Fabrizio Costantini (check out his site — the man's a genius with a camera) was in charge of putting together a little video of the performance. Without further ado, here's Asimo the wonder robot. Enjoy.

newVideoPlayer("Furai_Running.flv", 475, 376,""); You thought you had seen the last of the 2008 Mazda Furai concept didn't you? We certainly had enough coverage on the lusty concept that didn't make Popular Mechanics' Top 10 New Cars of Detroit list. What with the teaser photos , track video , live reveal shots , and super sneaky close ups - but no, we're not done yet. How about video of the ethanol powered Nagare-gasm running on the floor of the Detroit Auto Show? Would you like that? Yeah, we thought you would.

newVideoPlayer("SMARTfun.flv", 475, 376,""); British cheerleaders set the world record for most people crammed into a Smart car by cramming 14 lassies into the diminutive city car. Being the sporting gents we are, we decided to see how many burly Detroit Auto Show goers could fit, including Ben and our videographer Mark. The result? If you count them up we could only get five strapping young men inside (and it was hot as hell). Thanks to John and Mike from CreditSuisse for being good sports.

newVideoPlayer("HyundaiGenesis.flv ", 475, 376,""); Just in case you haven't had your fill of Hyundai's new V8-engine, rear-wheel drive world beater , here's some b-roll video of not one, not two, but three of them driving around a test track. And according to Genesis designer Joel Pieskowski, Hyundai's still trying to decide which set of braces they'd rather have decorating the grille of their new speed saloon -- and they're looking for your input. Your choices apparently are either the sideways white-picket or chain-link fence look. You retort in the comments below and they'll decide.

newVideoPlayer("ToyotaVenza_gawker.flv", 475, 376,""); The 2009 Toyota Venza Crossover Sedan was revealed live only moments ago and through the power of digital media, you can watch how it happened. It's a small wonder we got out of there alive since moments after the end of this video, the throngs of rabid Japanese photographers and journalists mobbed the stage for a Toyota Venza free for all. One of us almost lost a finger.

newVideoPlayer("NewDodgeRam.flv", 475, 376,""); As we told you earlier -- the point of the Chrysler press conference was the unveil of the new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 . But the reason everyone was really outside on a blustery n' cold overcast morning in Detroit was Dodge's running of the cows down Washington Ave. outside of Cobo Hall. Yes, we were there and yes, we caught it on tape and here it is for you to show -- without all of the trick truck action. Why? Because for Jason Vines Chrysler , sometimes the sizzle is the steak.

newVideoPlayer("furai_video.flv", 475, 376,""); The three rotor banshee planted in the 2009 Mazda Furai Concept is at full scream in this track time video at Leguna Seca. We're eagerly awaiting the unveil at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday, but it's a slim chance we'll see it blasting around like this on the frozen roads of Detroit. If you listen closely when the driver steps off the throttle, you can hear yourself wet your pants. galleryPost('mazdafuraidetroit', 6, '2009 Mazda Furai Preview Pictures');

newVideoPlayer("carcarcar_jalopnik.flv", 475, 376); It appears that this whole Tata Motors and Ford deal has been something India has been planning for a long time. At first, the video above just seems like a funny Indian music video dedicated to cars. But then you start to notice something not quite right at about the 2:30 mark. Those are American cars! That's the "big fist" from Detroit, ( You mean Joe Louis' fist, right? -- Ed. ) and the Henry Ford Museum ( You mean THE Henry Ford Museum, right? -- Ed. ) and the Detroit Auto Show and... FoMoCo HQ! They've been planning it all along. And the dry humping in font of that Hyatt ( You mean the Dearborn Hyatt....sigh...why do I even bother? -- Ed. ) sign is just them gloating. I for one welcome our new Indian overlords and look forward to dancing with them at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show . Car Car Car!

newVideoPlayer("NavySeals_gawker.flv", 475, 376); [ MCD is a legend in the Detroit auto advertising community who'll be contributing every once in a while as the mood strikes by providing an inside-the-8-mile take on the ad business. -- Ed. ] DETROIT- This past Wednesday night, the 'merican automotive capital of the world held the first annual "D Show" -- a celebration of the best of the city's advertising. A little background: The show was a replacement for the long-running booze-fueled CADDY show and the best of show category was long-dominated by, not-surprisingly, the car companies in the area. This year's show not only had a new name, but also included work from agencies headquartered out of the city, like Modernista! of Hummer fame (not to mention soon-to-be-out-of-town sponsors like Volkswagen). But in what is perhaps a sign of how things are changing in the Motor City, this year's Best of Show wasn't won by a car commercial... ...instead...

newVideoPlayer("VinesVideo_gawker.flv", 475, 376); We give Chrysler PR main man Jason Vines a lot of credit -- probably way too much -- but it's because once in a while he's able to deliver from his ADD-adled mind some truly amazing attempts to break through the clutter and cacophony of noise that is automotive public relations. Whether it's fueling the fire of the " Muscle Car Wars " (coming soon to a Woodward Avenue near you!) or coming to work dressed as his favorite sexual fantasy , Vines certainly doesn't act like other auto PR bosses. The newest example is the e-mail we just received with a video revealing some sketches of the automakers Detroit Auto Show concepts for the Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep brands. The video stars Vines, Chrysler's chief product man Frank Klegon, chief design man Trevor Creed and Sandy Fraser, the real boss running the show over at Chrysler PR. The video is a mix of schlock and the usual Vines shtick, and was executed...

newVideoPlayer("GasWarsDetroit_gawker.flv", 475, 276); At least that's what Glenn Zimmerman, a reporter at the local Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ insinuates may not happen in the not-so-positive effects-of-capitalism case we reported on earlier today . He's questioning whether the local Marathon gas station owner who, after the victim allegedly showed up on site looking to and eventually causing a ruckus, reportedly shot his BP-owning competitor in the head will end up being charged with anything. And all this over three pennies on the gallon. Jeez, can't we all just get along?
