  • Top Gear Pits BMW M3 Vs. Lexus IS-F, We Translate Stig's Morse Code [Top Gear]

If you had a chance to see last night's episode of Top Gear you'd have seen the four-door BMW M3 take to the track against the Lexus IS-F. You'd also see Stig take the IS-F for a power lap, again while listening to the sounds of Morse code. The inability to understand what Stiggie was saying / hearing due to all those dots and dashes was buggin' us, so we enlisted the help of one of America's preeminent practitioners of the code of dits and dahs — who also happens to be an avid Jalopnik reader (although he likes bikes more than cars for some reason. Jeesh, hasn't he heard the old maxim about "two wheels bad, four wheels good?" Whatever, we won't hold it against him). He's helpfully translated the two short bursts of circles and lines. Hit the jump for the full video as well as the translation. First in-car Morse Code: "Too many gears" That's obvious given the commentary from Jeremy Clarkson. Second in-car Morse Code: "I...
  • The 1998 BMW M5: Faster Than A Jet Car! [Classic Ad Watch]

newVideoPlayer("/BMW_E39_494.flv", 506, 423,""); British car shoppers in the late 1990s, perhaps not predicting the all-encompassing speed-camera network that would one day render their island unsuitable for M5-grade fast driving, probably yearned for the new factory-hot-rod BMW after seeing this ad. But… don't jet cars go a couple hundred MPH faster than a piston machine?
  • New BMW M3 ALMS Racer Takes To The Track [Motorsports]

newVideoPlayer("/M3racer.flv", 494, 400,""); We first saw the new BMW M3 racer earlier this year at its Chicago Auto Show reveal. Now, after a year of development, the finished product has taken to the track for a test run. galleryPost('rahalm3', 6, 'BMW M3 GT2 Racer'); The M3 racer's getting ready to do battle in the ALMS GT2 class against the likes of the Porsche 911 and Ferrari F430. Although we know function is more important than form on a racing car, but if the latter is any indication of the former, BMW will have a real winner with the new M3. Of course, a 485 HP 4.0-liter V8 powering a 2535 lb car will more than likely help as well. We mean, can someone please tell BMW to forget that whole "flame-surfacing" thing and just put widebody kits on all their street cars? [ BMW ]
  • Note To BMW: New M3 ALMS Racer Looks Hot On Track Without Flame-Surfacing [Motorsports]

  • 2009 BMW 7-Series Thinks It's KITT, Has Human-Detecting Night Vision [2009 BMW 7-series]

newVideoPlayer("/2009BMW7Series_gawker.flv", 506, 423,""); Although we showed you the new 2009 BMW 7-Series in all of its unofficial glory on Thursday. Well, now we've got the official details from BMW, and we've included the full press release for the new 7-Series after the jump. Sure, focus all you want on the horsepower (407 HP in the 750i and 750Li, 326 HP in the 740i and 740Li) or the torque (600 lb-ft of torque in the 750i and 750Li, 450 lb-ft of torque in the 740i and 740Li) or even the 155 MPH electronically-limited top speed, but the one thing that's sticking out in our minds is the new "individual pedestrian recognition" night vision system. That's right, the new BMW 7 will tell you when there's a person walking in front of the car, even at mid-double-digit speeds. See, there's a little icon of a person and everything. We're just wondering whether there's a similar icon for moose, deer or other woodland creatures. We'll...
  • Rum Bum DP Riley BMW Plays Bulldozer In Laguna Seca Dirt, Goes Up In Flames [Racing News]

newVideoPlayer("DPcrash_May18.flv", 494, 400,""); The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser. If you found yourself accidentally watching this past weekend's Grand Am race at Laguna Seca, you may have actually witnessed some entertaining stuff. Now, while it certainly was fun to see just about every car drive straight through the dirt and completely ignore the corkscrew, the hottest action of the race was this series of unfortunate events which happened to Matt Plumb's Rum Bum-sponsored Daytona Prototype. We knew that burying a fire with dirt will extinguish it, but who knew that burying a car with dirt will cause it to ignite? [ SPEED ]
  • Robert Rauschenberg, BMW Car Artist, Dead At 83 [Celebrities]

newVideoPlayer("RRBimmer_Jalopnik.flv", 494, 410,""); Contemporary American artist Robert Rauschenberg joined Pimp C and Janis Joplin on the list of artists from Port Arthur, Texas that we're sad to not have with us anymore. Though better known for any number of artistic accolades and pieces, we'll always remember Rauschenberg as the guy who designed the cover to Speaking in Tongues and, more importantly, the sixth BMW art car, a BMW 635 CSi. A departure from previous art cars, Rauschenberg's BMW stretched the concept of the car as a canvas by making it an actual canvas for works from Ingres, Bronzino as well as his own photographs. Additionally, this car was the first to incorporate the wheels into the design in such a strong manner. The product is both unique and thoroughly modern with an approach as timeless as the 6-series BMW itself. You can see a bit of the process in the video above, as well as Rauschenberg himself, who seems to be taking a break from...
  • M1 Homage Concept Proves It's A Real, Live Mid-Engined BMW Concept [Bmw M1 Homage]

newVideoPlayer("BMWM1Homage_gawker.flv", 494, 410,""); When we showed you the first shots of the BMW M1 Homage , there were many a cry that Photoshop visual trickery was being used to deceive our eyes. Well, it seems the Bavarians have heard your skepticism, and in an effort to prove they're both not made of wood and that they're nose isn't growing longer by the minute, have responded with this video footage. We're not saying 3D renderings can't also be used for these sort of moving pictures, but you'd have to be just plain stubborn to deny the physical existence of the M1 Homage concept after watching this footage. Besides, we just want to believe. We know there's mixed opinions on the styling, but we're too busy imagining what a modern mid-engined BMW racer would drive like to worry about what it may or may not look like.
  • Nick Heidfeld Shows Us What NOT To Do While Demonstrating The BMW Sauber F1 Car [Heidfeld BMW F1 Crash]

newVideoPlayer("SauberWreck_Jalopnik.flv", 463, 387,""); BMW thought it would be a good idea to bring out the new Sauber F1 car for a bit of fun at the BMW plant in Munich. Why not halt ze making of ze Bimmers for a few minutes and give the 5,000 or so workers a little entertainment? Well, we can think of a reason. BMW's driver Nick Heidfeld zooms down the strasse and does a donut for the crowd yesterday without incident. Apparently pleased with himself, he guns that big engine and heads down the street for an encore. This is where things start to fall apart. Literally. Overcome with the joy of a well executed donut, Heidfeld loses track of where the barrier is. Oops. At least he missed the medical car . Thankfully, someone made a video of it because the official F1 press release was typically mum about the incident. We tell ya, Bernie's yet to find a problem he can't ignore. • EXCLUSIVE: "The Ramp", A Documentary by Jeff Schultz [Ad Watch]

var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/comedy/EXCLUSIVE_BMW_Launches_1_Series_from_Germany_to_San_Fran'; "There's a fine line between genius, and insanity — and a hair brained scheme, and a revolutionary idea." posits this film, and we agree. As a result of our early discovery of the 2009 BMW 1-Series themed Rampenfest viral marketing campaign, we have been offered the exclusive rights to bring you the world wide documentary premier of "The Ramp". The thirty minute movie chronicles the men, the mission, and the madness of an attempt to launch the 1-series from Germany to America by way of ramp. And before you get to thinking, "Bah, that's not too hard," the attempt is not designed to simply go from the imaginary town of Oberpfaffelbachen, Germany to say, New York City. No, the car's intended target is San Francisco . So grab some popcorn and a comfy chair, sit back, and enjoy the frigtening naivete of physics terrifying Deutsche chompers...
  • Pontiac G8 GT Slams BMW 5-Series In Poetic Verse [Ad Watch]

newVideoPlayer("Pontiac_v_BMW.flv", 463, 387,""); From the book of car, whatever that is, comes the latest in the march of ads for the Pontiac G8 GT . We all thought the Spy Hunter commercial was clever, and the Hot Wheels one was slick too. This new web-only commercial turns it up a notch, taking the fight right to the lion's den, comparing the new 2008 Pontiac G8 GT to the BMW 5-Series. Hmm, that's an interesting approach from the brand that never used to drive excitement, especially when they claimed they were , but since it's their ad, do we really have to say who comes out ahead in this one? What we really like about this latest commercial is the poetry slam vs. powerpoint presentation style, plus the funny pictures of goats. Subtle allusion to the Pontiacs of the past, perhaps, but automakers should remember that farm animals always make for a good direction for a car commercial. At least in our minds. [ Youtube ]
  • BMW X6, in Production, in Action, on Video and Coming to the Detroit Auto Show? [BMW X6]

newVideoPlayer("BMWX6_gawker.flv", 475, 376); var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Promotional_video_of_new_BMW_X6_leaks_out'; This promotional B-roll footage of the new production version of the BMW X6 just appeared on our radar screen-like RSS reader this morning. One thing's for certain, this slight leakage tells us we'll probably be seeing the embargo break on the new vehicle any moment now. Yup, we're just waiting for a literal torrent of shots of the new big-butt sedan/coupe/CUV/wagon thing any moment now. Yes, any second now...wait, no, not yet. Now? Nope, keep waiting. Now? No! Watch the video, fercrissakes! So what's different? Well, in comparison with the X6 concept previewed in Frankfurt , the notable differences appear to be the same changes we saw in the spy photos from back in September -- visible B and C-pillars, the larger exterior mirrors and the new pipes in the rear. Now we're wondering -- is this the new Detroit Auto Show preview...
  • Ad Watch: The BMW 3-Series Is A Cult On Wheels, Makes For A Good Commercial

newVideoPlayer("BMW3SeriesAd_gawker.flv", 475, 376); Yes, the BMW 3-Series is a religion to many -- a part of pop culture, a subculture. Heck, it's like Joseph Stalin or Kennedy -- it's a cult of personality. And it also makes for a killer car commercial. In a world of watered-down attempts at humor and silly jingles -- this 3-Series commercial stands out. It's an ad that's does what ads about cars with a history should be doing -- drawing upon that history and the positive emotions associated with it to use to sell the present day car by showing us the new version of the ride with a clear white background -- a lack-of-color representing the endless possibilities of the future. Don't get us wrong, it's no Ferrari Shell ad, and it's no Michael Bay Chevy ad -- but it does succeed where many recent commercials have failed -- it made our pulses quicken and lean forward to pay closer attention. What more does an advertiser want?
  • New Cars: 2008 BMW M3 Sedan, Now With Video!

newVideoPlayer("BMWM3Sedan_gawker.flv", 475, 376); If you weren't around this weekend you may have missed the reveal of the official pictures and details on the new 2008 BMW M3 sedan (or saloon, depending on which you prefer). We found out the Euro-spec sedan's getting the same credentials as the coupe -- a 4.0-liter V8 hitting 414 HP at 8,300 rpm and 295 lb-ft of torque at the 3,900 rpm mark on the tachometer. Now, however, we've got some driving video -- so check out the new hotness from both the inside and the outside. We'll wait here with the press shots below and the full press release after the jump until you're done. galleryPost('bmwm3sedanpress', 8, 'BMW M3 Sedan'); THE NEW BMW M3 SEDAN M3 Sedan Comes to America in 2008 Woodcliff Lake, NJ - October 6, 2007... BMW raises the performance benchmark once again with the introduction of the 2008 M3 Sedan. • New Cars: BMW 1-Series Convertible, on Video

newVideoPlayer("bmw_1_conv_1_gawker.flv", 475, 376); What could be more relaxing than a spirited jaunt on a German country lane in a convertible ? If you answered, "17 minutes in a dumpster full of clotted cream with Nigella Lawson," please focus. BMW released some b-roll of its new 128i convertible (yes, the same BMW 128i convertible we revealed to you mere moments ago -- the drop-top version of the BMW 128i we revealed back in July, and yes, the same 1-series we saw the cloth pulled back on in Frankfurt) amidst a mild wringing on some Bavarian b-road. Its breezy cinematography makes us pine for those summer afternoons at the yacht club, relating bawdy jokes with the Windsor sisters and Edmund over gin and tonics. Ah, the squash matches we'd have. Then, we'd retire to Edmund's 325i convertible for line after line of Columbian high-grade. Ah, the tomfoolery.
