  • 1970 Dodge Challenger [Down On The Street]

    Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Today we've got a car that I knew I'd find in Alameda someday: a Chrysler E Body! Now, these things have become totemic worship objects for Baby Boomers who remember when they had hair, virility, optimism, etc., so just about all of them now spend their days locked in garages in between cruise nights and car shows, much like the equally seldom-seen first-gen GM F Bodies. I've seen this Sub Lime '70 around for years, but never parked on the street… until now! I found this car on the same block as a few other DOTS honorees, including the '57 Cadillac , the VW Transporter Syncro , and a couple you haven't seen yet. Hemi blah blah blah, that's all you hear about when folks talk about the '70 Challenger's engine choices. Fact is, the majority of these cars came from the factory with 318s (60%, according to the Standard...
  • Win On Sunday, Still Don't Sell On Monday: Screamin' AMCs In Eardrum-Punishing Trans Am Action! [Monterey Historics]

    newVideoPlayer("/Trans_Am_AMC_476.flv", 506, 423,""); Sure, there were plenty of Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers- not to mention a few furrin jobs in the 2-liter class- roaring around the track in the Historic 1966-74 Trans Am Cars event yesterday, but: red-white-and-blue Javelins and AMXs! The sound of 40 V8s WFO on the track overwhelmed my poor camera's sound-recording abilities, but I did get a usable video of this Javelin warming up. Make the jump for many Trans Am photos. galleryPost('MH08TransAm', 6, 'Historic Trans Am Cars In Monterey');
  • Sapporo Brings Touch of Mitsu-Malaise To Oregon [Down On The Street Bonus Edition]

    The streets of Eugene, Oregon (and PaulN's camera) gave us the '68 Saab 96 few weeks ago, and now PaulN has found us another interesting old Eugenemobile. The Plymouth Sapporo was yet another of Chrysler's attempts to fend off Malaise collapse by slapping its nameplates on various Mitsubishis, but (unlike the Colt) they're just about impossible to find nowadays. Make the jump for an additional gallery and PaulN's description. galleryPost('DOTSBEEugeneSapporoTop', 6, 'Plymouth Sapporo In Eugene Part 1'); Either a '78, '79 or '80. Also sold as Dodge Challenger. It's a Mitsubishi Galant Lambda, or Scorpion. RWD; 2.6 Astron 4 cylinder with silent shaft and MCA Jet (similar to Hondas CvCC) extra valve for emission control. It was Japanese version of the "luxury personal car"; counterpart to Chrysler Cordoba, et al. It was also the predecessor to the Starion, which shared the same basic platform/chassis, and engine (turbo, of course...
  • Why Get The New Challenger When You Could Have This? [Found On EBay]

    It tells you something about the wrath of numbers-matching/date-coded Mopar fanatics that the seller of this '71 Challenger station wagon feels compelled to start off his description with the statement: "Not orig anymore and has not been since 1973 so # guys get over it. So no emailing me telling me its not correct and I should put it back orig to me its worthless that way as it would look like any other challenger out there." This thing would be cool enough simply as an E-body wagon, but it has an Olds Vista Cruiser roof! Potrzebie! Imagine having this thing in your garage... right next to your Demonpage and Valiantpage, of course. Thanks to Yuri for the tip!
