It's strongly rumored the diesel version of the Audi TT could find its way stateside. With that in mind, the boys over at Popular Mechanics packed their bags and boarded a midnight plane to Blighty to try one out. In a cable back to their New York HQ, they report the oil-burning 2008 Audi TT 2.0 TDI is smooth, refined and makes overtaking easy as a wiggle of your big toe. Exclusively available in the UK with a 6-speed manual, they calculated their average fuel economy during a mix of city and highway driving to be 39.1 MPG (US). That's while making 258 lb-ft and reaching a top speed of 140 MPH, mind you. Please, god of cars, bring us this beautiful torque-heavy 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Please! galleryPost('pmttdiesel', 8, 'Audi TT TDI'); [ Popular Mechanics ]

Little did we know that as we spent our time hanging around the Audi V12 LeMans concept at the Audi party in Manhattan last night that this particular model may never be. According to AutoBlog.nl , Audi's Martin Dick announced the V12 TDI would inspire a diesel model carrying a 382 HP 4.8-Liter TDI V8, instead. While this may help with fuel economy and price, it means prospective buyers will have roughly 118 horsepower less to play with. galleryPost('v12lemansgeneva', 6, 'Too Sexy For A V12'); Audi also apparently confirmed to them that a roadster version of the R8 was due out sometime in the future. How long it takes before it goes on sale, and where it goes on sale, is anyone's guess. AutoBlog.nl via GTSpirit ]

newVideoPlayer("AudiR8TDI_Jalopnik.flv", 463, 387,""); We can't get enough of this Audi R8 V12 TDI Le Mans Concept . OK, so its not quite on the track or in showrooms just yet. And yes, it's an awfully brilliant "Brilliant Red" paint job on this oil-burning torque monster . However we imagine that when it does hit the streets with all that ground-pounding torque , the world might just spin backwards. Maybe that's why it's just sitting still for now. The globe needs time to brace itself for the impact. So much for diesels being Earth-friendly.

While we were playing with Audi's smaller V8-powered diesel Q7 (thanks to the folks at Honeywell), it looks like the multi-ringed brand was working on taking the rocket-powered powerhouse of an SUV to a whole new oil-burning level with the new Audi Q7 V12 TDI. With the new bigger, longer and more uncut diesel engine under the hood it officially makes the new Q7 the most powerful diesel-powered passenger vehicle around. That big 6.0-liter engine generates a whopping 500 HP and (wait for it) an astonishing 757.5 lb-ft of torque. That means the new Q7 has a 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) time of just 5.5 seconds. On average, it requires just 11.9 liters of fuel per 100 km -- a figure translating to roughly 19.77 MPG. Do want. Oh yes, definitely do want . Presales of the Audi Q7 V12 TDI will begin in Germany during the second half of 2008 and we're of the assumption people will be calling it a 2009 model. Full details below the jump. galleryPost('2009AudiQ7V12TDI', 6, '2009 Audi...

Seems that somebody is pushing forward with more diesel cars. In this case it's the Ingolstadt jungen heeding the call with the freshly announced Audi TT 2.0 TDI Quattro. Everything Audi TT we've seen already but with added oil burning flavor for maximum enjoyment. The turbocharged four pot common rail diesel manages 170 hp at about 4,200 rpm and a healthy 258 lb.ft. or torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. That meaty power band is good for 0-100 km/h sprints in the neighborhood of 7.5 seconds - not bad for an engine good for a claimed 42 mpg. More news as things develop, but for know, gnaw on the press release below the fold. Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI quattro Powerful performance with maximum efficiency Ingolstadt - Audi is once again setting standards, this time with the new Audi TT and its TDI engine--a model that combines pure sportiness and powerful performance with sensational efficiency. The Audi TT 2.0 TDI Coupe quattro and Audi TT Roadster 2.0 TDI quattro are the first series...

newVideoPlayer("DieselHyperMPG.flv", 475, 295,""); We'll admit it, we've been teases this week. Two forbidden diesels and nary a whisper of fuel economy. Well, today you get the goods. We aren't going to give you the standard "this is what we got in the city and this is what we got on the highway" spiel, beccause you can find that anywhere. Officially, the Civic does about 41/56, Q7 does 19/21. Booorrr-ing. What we're going to do is hypermile these cars. Although, much like Jack Nicholson in A Few Good Men , we're not sure you can handle the truth. To be perfectly honest, we were shocked ourselves. Shocked and giddy, like a bunch of little girls splashing around in a pool of glistening diesel. Before you click through and watch the video, we need to lay down some facts. What we did can be repeated by anyone. There were no tricks, no cheats. Hell, we didn't even make that much of an effort. The footage you're about to enjoy isn't...

326 horsepower, 550 lb.ft. or torque, 0-62 mph in 6.4 seconds, top speed of 146 mph, acres of leather, panoramic sunroof, auto-manual six speed, multi-setting air suspension, power everything, parking assist... the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI practically bribes its occupants into loving it. It's hard to provide an objective review of a car which seems to do everything better than any other car in its class. Spending time with the Q7 oil burner, you get the distinct feeling we are getting the shaft with the gasoline versions. galleryPost('doanedieselaudiq7', 6, 'Audi Q7 4.2 TDI'); galleryPost('doanedieselaudiq7intdetail', 6, 'Audi Q7 4.2 TDI Interior and Detail'); Power. Absolute and unadulterated power. It extends into every facet of the vehicle; every button, every bolt, every joint and stitch. That sums up the character and content of the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI. It's almost like a throne from which one can exact his will upon the unknowing driving populace. The SUV...

In the wake of the diesel tide that was the Detroit Auto Show, we decided to hoodwink talk our friends at Honeywell into providing us with some of the most forbidden fruits of the Euro-spec diesel world. As a result we've been living and commuting with the not-for-the-USA 2007 Honda Civic i-CTDi and the 2007 Audi Q7 4.2 TDI for the last week. Over the next three days we'll be laying out our reviews of these cars and of how they fit the driving habits of the average American consumer. We'll be reviewing them separately today and tomorrow, with something special planned for Friday so sit back and enjoy the oil burning ride.

A few months back we told you about the Abt AS5 which is a tweaked version of Audi's 3.0-liter TDI A5. Well guess what? They went even harder. Horsepower, originally up from 240 to 272 hp, is now an even 300 ponies. But the real news is the torque. Are you sitting down? Yeah? OK: 442 ft-lbs. of the stuff. From a 3.0-liter engine!! Wasn't it not long ago that heavy duty one-ton pickups stonked way, way less twist? All that torque shows up at 2,400 rpm, 60 mph happens in 5.3 seconds on the car's way to a 164 mph top speed. It always bares repeating: Americans buy horsepower but drive torque. Can we get some decent diesels over here, or what? [ via Motor Authority ]

Audi pulled out the huge guns to reveal a car that has as much of a chance hitting showrooms as Dennis Kucinich does defeating Ron Paul for President of the Internet. How big? NBC's Today travel editor Peter Greenberg emceed the whole shebang and even managed to semi-hardball some $100 a barrel, $4.00 per gallon petrol questions to Audi folks. Not big enough? OK, how about Frank Gehry, the world renowned architect and designer of LA's own exploded artichoke Walt Disney Concert Hall. Mr. Gehry acknowledged that while he tries to build great buildings, Audi does the same when it comes to cars. Oh, the Cross Cabriolet quattro? Well, it has a 3.0-liter, 240 hp diesel mill that stumps up an impressive 369 ft-lb of the twisty stuff. It will hit 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, was designed in Santa Monica and is painted in a Sunset Blvd. inspired color called, "Sunset Copper." And... that's about it. Ah, right, funny Audi-speak phrase of the year from Chairman Rupert, "We are...

Will diesels ever fill the performance gap with gas burners in the car-buying marketplace (and not just the Le Mans track)? Perhaps. The Kempten tuners at Abt say they've tweaked 300 horsepower from Audi 's 3.0 TDI. It's a 20 percent increase from stock...
