Back in August we told you Lexus plans to unveil a new hybrid-only model at the Detroit Auto Show in January at the same time as the reveal of the new third-generation 2010 Toyota Prius . Now, a newly published rendering from Japanese buff book Mag-X may give us some clues of what to expect from a car they claim will be badged as the Lexus HS250h. We'll let Mag-X take it from here: The drawing reveals a well-proportioned four-door car with Prius-like lines and angles—especially the front slope of its windshield and hood—while retaining design cues which are unmistakably Lexus, most notably the back-end and taillight styling. The publication says the Lexus HS250h will most likely be outfitted with the 2.4-liter engine and electric motor combo found in the Toyota Camry Hybrid, and share many of the same mechanicals as that car. This includes the current-generation nickel metal hydride battery. Carrying over the powertrain would be significantly more cost-effective than developing an entirely...

Seems the chairman of the #1 best automaker from the land of the rising sun, Ken Watanabe, liked our Maximum Wagon Day so much, he's creating a Lexus wagon from a next gen Prius. The amicable blokes over at the Trend which has to do with Motors are reporting Toyota will be bringing two dedicated hybrids to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. One will be the generation three Prius, the other a Lexus "lifestyle wagon-like vehicle based on the Prius platform and drivetrain." Sounds pretty wagony to us, and that's all we really care to hear. Vanilla and beige luxo-wagons ho! [via The Trend of Motors ]

As part of a drive to push green innovation in the racing world, the American Le Mans series has announced the Green Challenge. Basically, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy are partnering with SAE to encourage race teams to use renewable fuels, alternative engine configurations, regenerative braking and emissions controls. Chevy unveiled this Corvette race car, plastered in E85 stickers, to highlight the announcement. We're bigger fans of the Vantage GT2 , which is also powered by ethanol, or the Lexus IS350 GT2 . No emissions targets or environmental impact limits have been set. While we would love to see racing reduce its impact on the world around us, thus furthering research into enabling passenger cars to do the same, we can't help but feel efforts like this merely pay lip service to being environmentally friendly in order to placate critics.

It looks like BMW is going to offer its first hybrid powertrain in the new X6 Sport Activity Vehicle. It's likely that sales of the X6 hybrid will begin in 2009. The new X-Drive system should come in handy distributing the massive torque the electric motors are sure to develop to whichever wheel has the most grip. [ Via eGM CarTech ]

Ferrari announced two goals for upcoming vehicles: to increase power-to-weight ratios and reduce emissions. To go along with some fairly ugly green stickers, their ethanol-fueled F430 prototype boasts 10bhp extra -- bringing the total to 493bhp -- and 5 percent lower emissions. It could be on sale by 2010, forming part of the company's pledge to shrink overall emissions 40 percent by 2012. Apparently, 5 percent at a time. galleryPost('ferraribiopowerlive', 6, 'Ferrari F430 BioPower in Detroit');

GM's new green push, dubbed GM>>next, shows what happens when a global multinational throws a few tens of millions in public relations and directs marching orders toward facing down rival Toyota's reputation, deserved or not, for greenness. It's the marketing wrapper under which all of GMs's alternative energy projects exist. One of those is GM's backing of E85 Ethanol, the increased production of which they're saying will reduce the use of fossil fuels to the tune of 30 percent by 2030. In between, the speculation on corn will continue to drive the price of dairy products, Cheetos and high-fructose corn syrup through the roof. The visual metaphor for the press event was extreme juggler Chris Bliss , who did a truly outstanding juggling number to the tune of the Beatles' "Carry That Weight." The balls were yellow, the color of GM's Ethanol initiative, corn itself, and many other things like Rick Wagoner's tie, bananas and one-fifth of...
