After finding a pair of '77 Celicas parked on the streets of Alameda ( this one and this one ), I had a first-gen Celica drought that lasted the better part of a year. Had all the rest been crushed? Then I started catching glimpses of this red '75 around town, and I knew it was just a matter of time before I found it parked somewhere. Since photographing this car downtown, I've found where it parks when off duty. Yes, it's a 33-year-old daily-driven Toyota. Who needs power door locks and cup holders? According to the original California smog sticker, this Celica has the indestructible 20R engine . Only 90 horses, but they'd keep galloping for hundreds of thousands of miles. 2,270 pounds. That's 23 pounds less than the tiny '09 Yaris... and the Celica has rear wheel drive! Which one would you take? Airbags or character? galleryPost('DOTS75Celica', 20, '1975 Toyota Celica Down On The Street'); DOTS 1-200 • DOTS 201-250

Seeing that '84 Toyota Celica in DOTS today triggered a vague memory of an Alameda Celica from back in the day, something having to do with high school. So I checked my Alameda High yearbook and, sure enough, there's a full page in the back featuring a Celica from the same era as our DOTS car. Several of the kids in the photo were my friends at the time, but I have no idea who owned the car or what the whole "Sette Mobile" thing means. But still- this Celica lives on in infinite time (and Sonjay "loves" the Surf Punks), and it may well be the same car I photographed a couple weeks back.

It's been a never-ending challenge to find old Japanese cars for this series, but (in the months since the readers applied their Stamp-O-Approval to early-80s Japanese DOTS cars ) I've been able to find a few of these Late Malaise Toyotas on Alameda's streets. This '84 Celica is somewhat frayed around the edges, but still in solid running condition. This is the high-end GT model, with plenty of mid-1980s attitude (and- most likely- 300,000 miles available in its 22R engine). This car's styling has held up well with the passage of 24 years; even today, it's got the looks to make your robotic alien mailbox say "Nice Car!" Back in the day, I recall thinking this rear marker-light treatment looked pretty goofy... and I still think so now. What is the symbol on this ornament supposed to represent? Back when we were looking at a '77 Celica , some commenters felt it was a swan, while others saw a dragon. galleryPost('DOTS84CelicaGT', 14, '1984...
