While Team Unsafe At Any Speed will be bringing a '65 Corvair to the Arse Freeze-A-Pa-Looza 24 Hours Of LeMons next month- thus snarfing the coveted Ralph Nader theme- they'll only be tying the record for Oldest LeMons Car Ever, since Team Field Find's Mercedes-Benz 190 was also a '65. Not only that, their car is safe at some speeds, because by '65 the Corvair had a Communist-mandated IRS rear instead of the patriotic swingaxle of the early models. UDMan , however, is made of sterner stuff, and he's gearing up to race a 46-year-old Corvair at next year's LeMons New England race… and he's looking for teammates! What a day! Being a LeMons Supreme Court justice at the Yeehaw It's Texas 24 Hours Of LeMons event means that the action never stops; the black-flag brigade at MSR cut no slack to those who bash into each other, slide off the asphalt, spin out, or otherwise commit acts of hoonage in the low-buck race cars, which means there's always a big line of cars stacked up in the punishment area. Everyone is innocent, of course, and there was drama aplenty, but the upshot is that it's 1:00 AM and I've only just now had a chance to break out the laptop and fill y'all in on the all-important Day One standings. First, the SCHWING Team Toyota Corolla FX16 finished the day on top, with 206 laps... Second place, is the Witchdoctor Motorsports Bikini Racer Camaro, also with 206 laps (and a 1.3 second slower best lap time). First the good news: after we reported that Team Vlad The Impala was facing a frenzied all-nighter to repair their garbooned transmission, the team's wrenches proved to be made of sterner stuff; here's what VTI member Drumhurrin has to say: By the way, they got that thing out, apart, back to together and back in within three hours. All nighter? Pshaw! However, once back together, we didn’t realize we had cracked the oil cooler. Doh! One more time, one more quick fix. Then back on the track! Quite a feeling, really. Probably the only car that got universally cheered just hours after being the paddock favorite for the People’s Curse. But I just think that was the scuttlebutt because we thought of it first. We can’t help it if a couple of unskilled NYPD cops slammed the thing over a curb and firing off both airbags meant that the city needed to auction it off to a pack of amateur racers for $400. Before all you statistics freaks start screaming "small sample size," relax and accept these graphs for what they are: the result of many hours of painful labor trying to extract meaningful data from official race results from a year of races cross-referenced with our LeMons Über Gallery posts to determine car make/model. What we learn is quite interesting: Japanese cars tend to do the best (RX-7, CRX), but the Chevy Caprice comes out on top as the LeMons car most likely to take the checkered flag. Welcome to Project Car Hell , where you choose your eternity by selecting the project that's the coolest... and the most hellish! We had what may be our all-time closest vote yesterday, with the 4x4 Econoline beating the lowrider Econoline 202 votes to 200. Today we're going racing! We've had Arse-Freeze-A-Pa-Looza LeMons PCH and the LeMons San Francisco PCH , and now tradition dictates that we have a LeMons South Edition PCH. Just in time for teams still hoping to make the deadline for the Yeehaw It's Texas LeMons event! With Mazda RX-7s taking the first two places at LeMons South (not to mention three of the top ten at the Arse-Freeze-A-Pa-Looza ), you've got to figure you're looking at one of the all-time great budget race cars. Light, simple, and powered by a wailing rotary that's sure to give your competitors a migraine by the time the race is over... and you can get 'em for peanut shells! Last October, the highest-placed Detroit car at the 24 Hours of LeMons Altamont race was the Spirit of San Diego '81 Chevy Malibu, grabbing a not-too-shabby 20th place . This time around, minus the fins and plus some mean-looking black paint, a good ol' American V8/rear-drive machine has left all them furrin cars (save one ) eating Detroit exhaust, as the Chevrolet drivers finished a mere three laps behind the #1 car. We're not sure what they changed (though the Malibu does appear to have wider, lower-profile rubber now), but it sure worked! Looking at the top teams of the 24 Hours of LeMons race last weekend, we thought it was great that a Detroit car finished in second place. Of course, Neons make great race cars, so no huge surprise there... but what about an '85 Chevrolet Cavalier wagon finishing in the Top Ten? That's not a typo- a Cavalier finished ninth! Better still, one of the team members is our own commenter Xargs , who was justifiably disappointed that I didn't get any shots of his car at the Altamont LeMons event a few months back. galleryPost('THLCavalierTop', 6, 'The Two Wheels Too Many Cavalier Part 1'); Xargs sent in some "before" photos of the car- does that look like a dominating race car? It turns out that a torquey V6 and front-wheel drive do pretty well at the racetrack; this car was contending at Altamont, too, but a tractor tire-versus-oil pan conflict knocked it out of the running at that race.
