What a difference 25 years makes. Maserati, once tainted by bad business deals and shoddy merchandise, not to mention an ill-fated tieup with Chrysler products, Maserati is a plain-out player these days. The Pininfarina-designed GranTurismo is a stunning car in any format, and with a 440-hp Ferrari-derived V8 and new MC-Shift dual-clutch tranny, it'll likely gain a few extra grains of road respect among the Aston-Martin-Uber-Alles set. Maserati reps assure us the automanual is a real achievement, not just some sluggish wetbox. Meow. With its classic long-hood GT proportions, the Maserati GranTurismo has fantastic style. But while it may look great driving along an alpine mountain pass, the driving experience might leave you wanting for more power. For those people, Maserati will be showing the new GranTurismo S at Geneva. Displacement is bumped from 4.2L to 4.7L, so the Maser is now making 440hp; 35hp more than the old engine. Perhaps even better news is the old ZF slushbox has been dropped in favor of a new dual-clutch transmission. All these changes help the S achieve a 100km/h(62mph) time of 4.9sec.
