What to do with all of those cars smashed in federal and IIHS crash testing? In theory, you could take them back for further study to help improve safety for future vehicles. Of course, that would mean wasting an advertising opportunity. And while we prefer the RoboCop Taurus , we'll admit that showing a wrecked version of your car isn't the worst way to show off that the only major hazard that comes with driving a new Taurus is death-by-boredom. We're well aware that the Ford Transit Connect is here and available in a lot of variations, but I'm still a bit confused by the taxi-model version that we spied last week and witnessed the official unveil of yesterday. The interior of this thing includes the mandatory glass panel that separates the driver and passengers. And that's where the confusion begins. The glass includes a LCD display much like we've already seen , but there also seems to be a sort of a map etched into the glass. galleryPost('transitconnecttaxiint', 3, 'Deep Inside The Transit Connect'); It would seem that they could just integrate the in-car GPS for the passengers in the LCD display, but the map etched into the glass makes me ponder differently. Despite the news of the eminent demise of the Ford Taurus X , we're now not as concerned because we just got our first ride in the 2009 Ford Flex . A very hip Ford rep dropped by our extremely touristgasmic digs near Times Square to give us a ride over to dinner and get a little free press for Ford's new hauler. It sure is. Maybe we're just unusually attuned, having been rendered all self-reliant by SoCal life, where being ferried around by somebody else is a sign of weakness. But as soon as we hit the outerboroughs this morning on our way into the City That Never Sleeps, en route to cover the New York Auto Show, we were reminded of the absolute importance of the Crown Vic and the awh-mighty Lincoln Town Car to the both the local economy and the urban psyche. Uni-body is all well and good--hey, it's actually superior engineering (according to many, if not all). But somehow it lacks that certain... body-on-frame vibe that says, Yo! I have a financial baron/media macher/fashion entrepreneur/corporate law rainmaker stashed in the back. Or just some underling from the late-night proofreading pool using the company dime to roll back to Brooklyn in soothing luxury. Let's not overlook the cab factor, either. Post-Checker, the Crown Vic is pretty much what most New Yorkers think when they cab...

The Ford Transit Connect first peeked its head out back at the Chicago Auto Show, but these latest shots show it wearing some different duds of the yellow, taxi variety. Word has it that this retrofitted Transit Connect will be rearing its yellow head at the New York Auto show. This model was seen roaming the streets of Detroit and was spied by a keen overlooker and we mean overlooker in the literal sense because the shots were taken from a third story window. For the specifics, the Transit Connect will be making its way stateside next year and includes a 2.0-liter four cylinder. The 19 city and 24 highway mpg does make me question it's reputation as a taxi. How about something of the solar variety ? [ WCF ]
