  • 1979 Cadillac Fleetwood Limousine [Down On The Street]

    Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Cadillacs sold pretty well, even after most of a decade of Malaise-y gas prices and general sense of diminished expectations, so you could still buy a great big angular slab of rear-wheel-drive Fleetwood as late as 1984. Here we've got a raggedy '79 Fleetwood that's been sitting on a major commercial strip for a couple of weeks now. This stretch of road is a popular spot to park cars for sale, since the traffic is so heavy. This Caddy, however, has no For Sale sign in sight; it may belong to the resident of a nearby apartment building, or it may be abandoned (this car has the telltale purple window tint, indicating that it is probably on its last owner). The APD is vigilant about this sort of thing, so a date with a tow truck may be in the offing. These things listed at $21,735 from the factory, or about 65 grand in 2008 dollars. Power...
  • Two Seats, Golden Razor Blade Optional: 1978 Cadillac Opera [Found On EBay]

    Now, this fine luxury two-seater's glovebox probably doesn't have a big bag of Quaaludes and the Disco Handbook inside, but it should! The Opera appears to be a '78 Seville with shortened passenger compartment and lengthened hood, courtesy of Cotellis Custom Coaches of (where else?) Miami, and this one has been bid up to a mere $2,250 at the time of this writing. Thanks to Chillyncincy for the tip! • Shopping For An 8.2 Liter Engine? [Junkyard Find]

    There was a time, maybe a decade ago, when Cadillac Eldorados with high-compression 500-cubic-inch engines were plentiful in self-service junkyards. These days, months can go by between sightings of non-Malaise 500s. As I learned when I helped a friend pull a 500 one sweltering, bloody-knuckled day, the Eldo's front-wheel-drive setup makes engine removal approximately 50 times harder than your typical Detroit rear-driver, but so what? Five hundred cubic inches! Power was a little down in '71, but this car's engine was still rated at 365 horses... and an 18-wheeler-esque 535 foot-pounds of torque. galleryPost('Junk71Eldo', 9, '1971 Cadillac Eldorado Down On The Junkyard');
  • 1970 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, With Bonus Beater Poll [Down On The Street]

    We've seen a pretty nice Cadillac and a fairly rough one , but we haven't seen a beater Caddy... until today! This '70 Coupe de Ville lacks a grille and rear bumper, but so what? It looks good! And, since we love beaters at El Jalop, that's an excuse for a poll. Vote early, vote often! 1970 was the pinnacle for the big Cadillac V8s, with the 500 engine rated at 400 horsepower and a staggering 550 foot-pounds of torque. 550 ft-lbs is getting into 18-wheeler territory! This '70, which lives just around the corner from one of the smallest DOTS cars , doesn't seem to move much. Maybe it's someone's personal Hell Project... or maybe it runs only on human blood (which is almost as expensive as 92 octane these days). All I can say is: this thing had better have Cherry Bombs! OK, now let's have our poll! Gawker Media polls require Javascript; if you're viewing this in an RSS reader, click through to view in your Javascript-enabled web browser. galleryPost...
  • 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible [Down On The Street]

    Almost two months since the last Cadillac? That just seems wrong , given how many old Cads still roam the island. That's why today's DOTS machine will be a Malaise Eldorado, similar to the '78 Eldo we had a while back, only this one's a convertible instead of a T-top car. Back in '76, there was a lot of hoopla over the Eldorado convertible being the Last American Convertible ever . As it turned out, it was the last convertible for less than a decade, but back in the Malaise Era you had this palpable sense that everything good was being taken away. The 500-cubic-inch engine in this car was rated at 190 horsepower, which is on the depressing side... until you consider its grunt-tastic 360 ft-lbs-o-torque. This example is in such nice shape that I'm sure the owner doesn't care about the leisurely performance and single-digit gas mileage. I found this car in the East End, mere yards from the '56 Willys Station Wagon (which is visible in a couple of the photos...
