Because the 5,000 LA Times and LA Daily News photographs in UCLA's Changing Times: Los Angeles in Photographs, 1920-1990 collection were all shot in Southern California- where the car has been king for 75 years- a bit of searching will unearth a lot of seriously cool car photos such as this 1980 shot . October is generally the warmest month here by the Bay, so that's when you get the big car shows on the island. On Saturday, Park Street was taken over by hundreds of chromium-dipped chariots ; the following day, a horde of Ferraris, Fiats, Lancias, Alfas, and the like swarmed across the bridges and set up shop on the soccer field of the junior high school at which I was forced to learn " The Hustle " in P.E. class, circa 1979. Sadly, the LeMons-veteran Ecurie Ecrappe Alfa wasn't there, but the presence of such jewels as a Fiat 2100 wagon, supercharged Lancia Scorpion, and SEAT 850 compensated somewhat. Every October, the old-time gearheads at Lee Auto Supply take over Alameda's main drag for the Park Street Classic Car Show. As we saw last year , I prefer obsessive close-ups of emblems and carburetors to shots of endless rows of 60s Mustangs and Camaros- hey, you can find that stuff anywhere ! Technically, this isn't a barn find; it's the collection of a lifelong racer in Southern California who is now retiring from the sport and plans to get down to just one car from his fairly extensive collection of race machines, classics, show cars, and projects. There's some painfully cool stuff in this dusty warehouse, including a couple of Alfas, a very clean '51 Ford, an Austin Healey 100-4, and more. We've reached another milestone in the Down On The Street Series, with today's vehicle being the 250th vintage (or at least interesting ) street-parked vehicle I've photographed parked on the streets of Alameda, California. It's been a little over a year since we saw the very first DOTS car , and I never thought I'd be able to find as many as I have. Doing this series has turned me into an annoyingly slow driver when I'm in Alameda, as I'm constantly cruising at minimum speed and scanning parked cars for potential DOTS candidates; by this time I've developed the ability to pick out an interesting parked car just from a nanosecond's glimpse of a grille at a distance of several blocks. The '88 Bentley Mulsanne had its entourage of coked-up thugs stuff the MGC into The Crusher in Friday's Choose Your Eternity poll , with nearly 65% of voters preferring Bentley Hell to MG Hell. With all the British, Italian, and French machinery we've seen in this series recently, we tend to forget that the Germans are no slouches at providing us with Hell Projects. Oh, sure, the Germans do a pretty good job with engineering and quality control (and British Leyland-style labor strife was never a factor, what with the stern Prussian overseers brandishing their riding crops at the assembly line workers), but complexity is dear to the heart of any self-respecting German engineer, and complex cars have complex problems! When I started the Down On The Street series, I'd shot a handful of cars and figured I'd be able to do a few dozen more before running out. Sure, I knew the island city of Alameda, California, had plenty of old cars parked on the street, but with a population of just 70,000 on a mere ten square miles of land, how many could there be? Well, it turns out the answer is: Plenty! Not only have we reached car number 150, I have sufficient photos stockpiled to keep the series going for quite a while. 1950 Dodge Pickup After ogling the chromium curvature of the '53 Nash ornament (currently installed on a '57 Studebaker) in yesterday's Emblem and Hood Ornament Pr0n gallery, it occurred to me that Alameda has plenty of nice hood ornaments that you can see without going to a once-a-year car show downtown. You can see them parked Down On The Street , in fact.
