This is Down On The Street Bonus Edition , where we check out interesting street-parked cars located in places other than the Island That Rust Forgot . I just got back from Denver, where I photographed a few cool old cars parked on the street, including a very nice early Mini… but you don't get to see that today. Instead, you get something even better! Denver-based Kitt and EJacobs continue to send in good stuff found in their neighborhoods (south and northwest Denver, respectively), and today we'll be admiring a trio of vintage Detroit wagons that continue to remind us that SUVs didn't always reign supreme in the family-hauling department. Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. It's Truck Monday again, and we might as well make it Chevy Truck Monday while we're at it! I found this work truck parked on a busy East End street, quite close to the '65 Thunderbird , and it's still earning its keep well into its fifth decade on the planet. There's something so right about a camper shell on a truck like this, though all the paint buckets and ladders I often see in the bed indicate that Travels With Charley style adventures aren't in the offing for this camper. Would anyone have imagined, back in '66, that this truck would still be relevant more than 40 years in the future, with its lack of nuclear reactor? Back then, a 42-year-old truck would have been a 1924 model- ancient! Of course, with its gas-swilling I6 or V8 powerplant, this truck's relevance may finally meet a challenge it can't surmount...

Welcome to Down On The Street , where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. We're going to look at our fifth Alameda Lincoln today; of the first five, the suicide-door primered '69 was the crowd favorite in the Favorite DOTS Lincoln poll . Today's car is another suicide-door model, and the oldest of the bunch as well. This car has had a mild donk treatment, but it's just the wheels- no suspension destruction, bubbly purple window tint, or rhinestone emblems indicating wheel diameter. If you like the way it looks with these wheels, great… and if you don't, it could be switched back to factory wheels and hubcaps in a matter of minutes. For '66, the four-door sedan Continental listed at $5,750, which was 169 bucks more than the Cadillac DeVille four-door hardtop and just $17 more than the Imperial four-door. The spirit of the Madman couldn't push the '53 Muntz Jet over the 16 Peugeots in yesterday's Choose Your Eternity challenge , although the Jet did give the Instant French Junkyard a good run for their money. Yes, it's Detroit versus Stuttgart, with the super-sophisticated 6.9 V8 taking on the blunt-instrument 421 V8. If you're looking for a fast Italian machine from the 60s, you've got your Ferraris and Maseratis and such, and even your Intermeccanicas . Don't stop with those cars, though, because Ghia didn't just do coachwork for other manufacturers- they made a few cars themselves! This '66 450SS , once owned by Wilt Chamberlain, has had its original Chrysler 273 V8 replaced with a Chevy 350; that seems sacrilegious (though it was done by Boyd Coddington), but it's still a fast, beautiful car. Those of you who read the Down On The Street FAQ over the weekend know that some of the machines we see in this series don't live on the street full-time. Most do, but every so often I'll find an obvious non-daily-driver that's just visiting, or maybe getting a rare exposure to the world outside of the garage. This immaculate E-Type is such a car; I spotted it parked in front of the island's most popular sports bar a while back and I haven't seen it since. I haven't been able to get my greasy mitts on many of these cars, so I can't claim any great depth of E-Type knowledge. However, I'm going to guess this is a '66 model (based on the dash and taillights) and hope that I'm pretty close. Jaguar experts, feel free to weigh in on this burning question. So the DOTS Bonus Edition photos keep rolling in from every direction- and I'm doing my best to post them all- but the stockpile of car photos from Denver has reached absurd proportions. First there was Kitt on the south side, then EJacobs started shooting interesting old cars in the northwestern part of town; by this time I have a backlog of a dozen vehicles from each of them. To add to the fun, I get shipped to Denver for work every few months, so I can add my own photos to the list! Today, we've got one set of photos each from Kitt, Ejacobs, and me. Hyperocky 's DOTS '67 Ford XL 2-door hardtop looks great, but we must remember that not all big Fords of its era are quite so nice these days. Plenty of beat-to-hell examples manage to clank along for decades before their date with The Crusher's jaws, as was the case with this extremely rough '66 I spotted at an East Bay wrecking yard last weekend. Last year, Belvedere Adrian brought two vehicles from his fleet of old Plymouths, plus his vintage Serro Scotty trailer, to a tailgate party before an Oakland Athletics game, and a good time was had by all. Last weekend, however, we figured we needed more Belvederes , so Adrian brought five of his favorite B-bodies, including the still-streetworthy Thunderhill 24 Hours of LeMons-bound '66 . The Junkyard Boogaloo Boombox was there, the food was excellent, and the A's ended up crushing the Royals like cockroaches. Six months have passed since we last saw a Chrysler B-body in this series? Well, actually the '78 Monaco Brougham is technically a B-body, but it's so incredibly Malaise that I hesitate to include it alongside the likes of the Super Bee and the Road Runner. Regardless of where you stand on the B-ness of the Malaise Monaco, it's tough to argue with the inherent goodness of this '66 Coronet 440 convertible, which I found parked near the waterfront and just around the corner from the Ford Econoline pickup This Coronet parks on the street every day and sees regular driving duty, yet is still in very nice condition. Obsessive date-coded Mopar freaks would scoff at its rock chips and minor dings, of course, but this is no show car. This car has "V8" emblems, so it probably came from the factory with a 273. The Coronet could also be had with the 318, 361, 383, or even the 426 Hemi, and this one may well have been through a half-dozen engines by this time. The "Coke...

You hear a lot about the late-60s Chargers, the Malaise Era Chargers, and the current crop, but what about the forgotten '66 and '67 models? Some think they're homely (and suspiciously similar in design to the AMC Marlin), but 40+ years sit pretty well on this '66 that the unstoppable Kitt found in her Denver neighborhood. After I was caught in a camera-challenged condition when spotting the '70 Fiat 500 near my office in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood and was forced to use the 640x480 so-called camera in my cellphone, I resolved to start carrying a real camera at all times. Naturally, I totally spaced on the camera thing when I caught sight of this 21-window Transporter while out for some Bánh mì on my lunch break last week, and once again we all get to look at blurry, wide-angle cellphone shots. These things didn't fare too well around here, because the sun and smog tend to eat up the seals around all those windows, which lets rust gain a toehold it generally never relinquishes. After almost a month since we last saw an Alameda Mercedes-Benz in this series, we're due again. Old Mercedes sedans are all over town (and, most likely, all over half the towns in the world), and they're so ageless that I often go right past them when eyeballing for potential DOTS cars. It's just that they've always been around ; not in huge numbers, but present in the background. I found this 250S on the same block as the '75 El Camino and the Double Cab '71 Chevy Pickup . This big Benz is in very nice original condition, with the interior remaining miraculously nice even after decades of California sun. List price on this car when new was $5,747, a couple hundred bucks more than a Cadillac DeVille. Which car was a better bet to last 500,000 miles?
