Every October, the old-time gearheads at Lee Auto Supply take over Alameda's main drag for the Park Street Classic Car Show. We've reached yet another milestone in the Down On The Street series- that's right, the 1960 Triumph TR3A was the 350th street-parked Alameda vehicle that we've seen here. Charles W. Cushman traveled the globe from 1938 to 1969, shooting tens of thousands of photos of what he found interesting. Fortunately for us, he thought scenes with cars were interesting; Indiana University has scanned all the photos, tagged them, and made them available to the public online. So the DOTS Bonus Edition photos keep rolling in from every direction- and I'm doing my best to post them all- but the stockpile of car photos from Denver has reached absurd proportions. First there was Kitt on the south side, then EJacobs started shooting interesting old cars in the northwestern part of town; by this time I have a backlog of a dozen vehicles from each of them. To add to the fun, I get shipped to Denver for work every few months, so I can add my own photos to the list! Today, we've got one set of photos each from Kitt, Ejacobs, and me. We were shocked, shocked to learn that the Peugeot 404 Baja racer annihilated the Oval Window Baja Bug in last Friday's Choose Your Eternity poll . It's a new week, however, and we've got new challenges ahead. Let's head on up to Seattle, where the constant rain creates sort of a year-round meat-market singles bar for lonely iron atoms looking to hook up with promiscuous oxygen atoms... and nobody goes home alone! When you've got a vehicle that's been sitting outside in coastal Washington for decade after decade, you figure you ought to be able to get it for a very reasonable price- and you figured right! Much as we like flathead engines , Detroit's development of V8s with overhead valves after World War II really gave a shot of horsepower to those speed-maddened hot-rodders who were ready to take their machines to the next level past the ol' flathead Ford. Cadillac and Olds came out with their sibling OHV engine design in 1949, and Caddies from that year until 1967 were powered by 331s, 365s, 390s, and 429s. We've reached another milestone in the Down On The Street Series, with today's vehicle being the 250th vintage (or at least interesting ) street-parked vehicle I've photographed parked on the streets of Alameda, California. It's been a little over a year since we saw the very first DOTS car , and I never thought I'd be able to find as many as I have. Doing this series has turned me into an annoyingly slow driver when I'm in Alameda, as I'm constantly cruising at minimum speed and scanning parked cars for potential DOTS candidates; by this time I've developed the ability to pick out an interesting parked car just from a nanosecond's glimpse of a grille at a distance of several blocks. Since the hanging chads hosed the polling mechanism in our previous attempt to determine whether Britain or Italy should challenge France in the Project Car Hell Superpower Showdown, we had to do an all-French Choose Your Eternity poll (which the Panhard won handily) on Friday. Today we're going to take another shot at the Britain-Italy matchup, with another Alfa for the Italians and a Triumph from the Brits. In 1963, an Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint coupe sold new in the United States for $5,895. That was $1,200 more than a '63 Stingray with the optional 360-horse L84 engine. So you gotta figure this '63 Alfa Romeo 2600 (go here if the ad disappears) for just $1,900 is the mother of all steals- I mean, what's an L84 Corvette worth these days? You'll be laughing at all those Alfa drivers with wimpy four-bangers under the hood, because this car has a wild DOHC inline six with three sidedraft carburetors. When I started the Down On The Street series, I'd shot a handful of cars and figured I'd be able to do a few dozen more before running out. Sure, I knew the island city of Alameda, California, had plenty of old cars parked on the street, but with a population of just 70,000 on a mere ten square miles of land, how many could there be? Well, it turns out the answer is: Plenty! Not only have we reached car number 150, I have sufficient photos stockpiled to keep the series going for quite a while.
