What an amazing couple of weeks it has been! I never expected to receive so much feedback and support about the addition to Njection.com. The Speed Trap Mashup and the site as a whole have performed admirably well all things considered.
THANK YOU: First of all, I want to thank Melica Johnson, Salem News and all of you for signing up and contributing to the site. The attention that the site has garnered has been at times overwhelming but not unappreciated. From insurance agencies to local municipalities, people have visited the site from all corners of the world. The site's appearance on CNN places us in a unique position so I hope to give the people what they want and help build a small community. If you would like to talk to me about an interview or have any feedback about the site, visit the contact page and drop me a line.
HOW TO USE: Here is a quick video on YouTube on how to use the Speed Trap Mashup. We will create another one soon.
REST OF THE SITE: Besides the Speed Trap Mashup. We have 3 other major sections of the web site. First, our forums section contains over 400 different cars from around the world. People can chat up about different automotive related issues they are having or meet up for car drives. Second, the blogs section contains the latest information about the automotive world. Lastly, our photos section contains over 5 Gigs of photos you can you use for your desktop backgrounds. Look around and enjoy yourself.
EXPORT TO GPS: A lot of the emails we have received have asked for a way to export the information from our web application in order to take it on the go with them. To meet those requests, we have opened up our online store. We are selling the speed traps and red light camera information so that you can load it onto your GPS device. The only system we have currently tested it on is Garmin but it should be compatible with other systems out there. The information included is formatted so that you get an alert when you come within a pre-determined distance to the speed trap, the speed limit for the area where the speed trap is located, and a brief description as noted by the original poster is displayed. Once you make the purchase from the store, your account will be upgraded so that you can download the file from our download section. There is also a test file in the download section that you can use to test whether your mobile GPS is compatible. Right now I am manually creating the files. In the future, you will be able to download directly from the database so newly created speed traps and red light cameras will be immediately available to you at the time that you download them. Currently the store only accepts PayPal for payment. We will upgrade this to include credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, etc) with increased demand.
REWARDS PROGRAM: We are encouraging users to submit and rate known speed traps and red light cameras on the site. That encouragement will most likely be in the form of cash or upgraded features such as access to the speed trap files. We are working on the matrix for the incentive program so stay tuned. If you have speed traps that you want to submit that are in excel/csv format, email them to me along with your username on the site and they will be included on the site under your username. The ones that you have already submitted and/or reviewed are already logged and you will get credit for those. You have to be a member of the site and submit speed traps or ratings under that account (our rating system is used as a filter to validate or negate speed traps posted by visitors of the site). We are also working on a rewards program for people who refer a friend to the site who eventually buys something from the store. Again, this one is still in the works but we wanted to let everyone know about it.
UPCOMING CONTEST: Right now we are looking at doing a contest. For one of our members, we will be giving away a Garmin nĂ¼vi 650 with a one year subscription to the Premium Package of speed traps and red light cameras listed in the store. Details about the contest will be posted to the site Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Hopefully we will be able to do more of this in the future.
Thanks again everyone. Spread the word and stay safe.

You decide. Me. I think someone was pressing a deadline.
Microsoft Live Maps was down earlier today for a new update. The update allows for 1) a new plugin for Firefox for 2) Microsoft Live Maps in 3D with popup bird view. This uses Microsoft Photosynth technology to blend in pictures from around the world into the map to allow for a unique view.
This is an awesome add-on for Microsoft and another feature Google will have to catch up with.
Hopefully this won't get buried either. My site hits the front page of Lifehacker.. no problem. I get a link from MSN.com directly to my site .. no problem. I try to post to Digg and my story gets buried. Three different stories get posted about my site (http://njection.com/speedtrap) from different individuals and get buried because of one person. One person that has an issue not with the subject matter but with his browser. Meet spoonsman and my chat with him.
(2:07:53 AM) rainmanjam: Hello Are you there?
(2:07:54 AM) likeablerodent is now known as LikeableRodent.
(2:17:46 AM) rainmanjam: knockknock
(2:23:27 AM) LikeableRodent: yes?
(2:23:48 AM) rainmanjam: You really like Safari I take it
(2:23:57 AM) LikeableRodent: actually, opera
(2:24:04 AM) rainmanjam: either or
(2:24:12 AM) LikeableRodent: but safari is usually in the same internet boat
(2:24:17 AM) rainmanjam: true
(2:24:33 AM) rainmanjam: I take it you burred both of my stories
(2:24:50 AM) LikeableRodent: yeah
(2:25:02 AM) rainmanjam: just because it didn't work with opera?
(2:25:13 AM) LikeableRodent: yeah
(2:25:18 AM) rainmanjam: wow
(2:25:20 AM) LikeableRodent: yup
(2:25:46 AM) rainmanjam: front page of lifehacker.com and msn.com
(2:26:03 AM) rainmanjam: can't break digg because of one person...:-(
(2:26:45 AM) LikeableRodent: I have a policy of burying stories that link to articles that specifically block opera/safari
(2:27:08 AM) rainmanjam: its not a block.. they don't with MSN maps
(2:27:22 AM) rainmanjam: so rather than throw up an error message
(2:27:32 AM) LikeableRodent: I do realize that it's a problem with MSN maps
(2:27:57 AM) LikeableRodent: which is why I'm a fan of the google maps API if you're going to do stuff with it
(2:28:17 AM) rainmanjam: so because of that you bury it
(2:28:30 AM) LikeableRodent: yes
(2:29:15 AM) LikeableRodent: it's just because of the browsers, and it's not specific to that article
(2:29:30 AM) LikeableRodent: but if a site wants to make itself incompatible, then it's not worth it in my eyes
(2:31:18 AM) rainmanjam: so you take it away from the other 96% of compatible browsers (from my google analytics stats). Why not just ignore it
(2:31:56 AM) rainmanjam: It was faster using Microsoft Maps API
(2:32:51 AM) LikeableRodent: because after using opera for over seven years I've gotten sick of sites that block it, usually for no reason. It seems that the only way to stop it is to be the squeaky wheel.
(2:34:37 AM) rainmanjam: Then ..I'm sorry. I can't satisfy everyone
(2:34:48 AM) rainmanjam: I thought it was a cool idea
(2:35:12 AM) LikeableRodent: oh, it's a cool idea
(2:35:20 AM) LikeableRodent: I just don't like the execution
(2:37:01 AM) rainmanjam: I guess all I'm saying is that you didn't have to bury it.. I know you have your "rule"
(2:37:33 AM) rainmanjam: and thats understandable
(2:38:04 AM) rainmanjam: but there are a lot of other people that think it would be cool
(2:40:50 AM) LikeableRodent: the whole point of digg, even if oftentimes the system is taken advantage of, is that if someone (in this case, me) thinks a site isn't worthy, than can bury it. But if it's good enough content enough people will digg it and it will get to the top. Yeah, in reality it doesn't always work that way, but for the little fact that I personally found it unworthy for the reason stated, as a user and by the principles of the site, I should by all means click the bury button.
(2:41:40 AM) LikeableRodent: I see why you think I should just ignore it and move on
(2:42:19 AM) LikeableRodent: and I'm sorry, but if I don't deem a story worthy (and I'm saying that without trying to sound haughty), it gets a bury
(2:42:35 AM) LikeableRodent: and many pardons, but I must head to work now
(2:42:58 AM) rainmanjam: Then everyone loses.. have a good day at work.
(2:44:13 AM) LikeableRodent: if you truly think it's that worthy, then the masses won't reject it. Anyway, I saw you found me through stumbleupon, and you'll likely get much better traffic in the long run through them.
(2:44:21 AM) LikeableRodent: g'bye
What is your feeling on this?
Speed Trap Mashup using Microsoft Live Maps.
This is in Orlando, FL on SR 528 also known as Bee Line Drive or Beach Line Drive. As you can see, there are two Florida Highway Patrol offices in the shot. One of them already has a car pulled over. This is the case over and over again around the country. They call it "Safety Corridors" "Traffic Control" or what ever name they want to call it. Radar / Laser detectors such as Bel, Valentine 1, Cobra and Whistler do not work all of the time. Once the cops have you in your sites, they pull the trigger and your speed is detected. Radar/ Laser jammers are nice but expensive. They use terrain to their advantage to get you every time. Over hills and around corners they sit waiting for cars to go one mile over the limit and they got you. And once you get a ticket, your insurance goes up as well. Try getting a quote after getting a ticket for going 15 over the limit.
Well I built a mash-up that uses Microsoft Live Maps to help people point out where police officers sit. Anyone can view the speed traps but members can add new ones. Speed traps added my members are added immediately and membership helps filter out bad speed traps. Future revisions of the site will allow for updates to Mobile GPS devices such as Garmin, Magellan, and TomTom. In addition, Updates to and from GPS enabled cell phones will be available as well.
I hope you like it, join, add, and Digg.
