Well, that didn't take long. Just a few days after Ford officials confirmed production of the 2010 Lincoln MKT crossover, our spies captured several clear images of a development vehicle. Judging by the interior shot, this crossover looks to be very close to production-ready. The Lincoln MKT is based on a Ford Flex platform, so it's no surprise the Lincoln will share the 270-hp, 3.7-liter normally aspirated V-6 engine found in the MKS on base models and have an optional 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 that utilizes direct injection and turbocharging to produce an estimated 340 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque. Expect a familiar six-speed automatic transmission behind either V-6. Front-wheel drive will be standard and all-wheel drive will be available. You won't, however, have to worry about mistaking the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT. As with most cars these days, there's nothing glaringly wrong with the 2009 Lincoln MKZ . It rides smoothly, handles well, accelerates with alacrity and comes well-equipped even in base form. However, much the same could be said of the Ford Fusion, on which the MKZ is based. The problem is that Lincoln simply hasn't done enough to distinguish the MKZ from its competent but commonplace platform-mate. Sure, the MKZ receives the full Lincoln styling treatment inside and out -- but the younger demographic isn't likely to approve of the MKZ's chromed-out mug and staid retro-themed interior. And under the skin, it's basically a Fusion with 42 extra horsepower. That might be a good thing if the MKZ were a family sedan, but Lincoln is sending it into battle against heavy hitters like the Acura TL, Lexus ES350, Nissan Maxima and VW Passat. Are the rumors true? Is Lincoln preparing its own version of the 2009 Ford Flex ? This mule recently spotted in Detroit seems to indicate that a Lincoln crossover is in the works. Obviously none of the sheetmetal on this test mule is headed for production, but that big waterfall grille is all Lincoln. And as our spy photographer pointed out, the first test mules of the Ford Flex also used Freestyle sheetmetal. If you’ve been waiting for the all-new 2009 MKS with quiet patience, then the new Lincoln flagship is for you. This is a car all about refined luxury for the responsible types who want a little pampering and a little power—but it must be guilt-free.Ford will start building the full-size luxury sedan at its Chicago plant next summer. Volume should be in the 40,000 range annually, with a starting price below $38,000. On the style spectrum, the MKS lands between the Lincoln MKZ (formerly Zephyr) and the sexy MKR concept that kept bringing us back to the Lincoln stand at the Detroit show in January to double-check that it was really wearing a Lincoln badge.
