The fastest and most powerful series production car from GM, the new Corvette ZR1 , is on sale in the UK with first customer deliveries scheduled to arrive towards the end of the year. And when GM says first deliveries it actually means just two left-hand drive (yep, no right-hand drive folks) models will arrive in 2008 and only single digit volumes will be available for 2009, which could be just as well since on-the-road (OTR) pricing for the 647PS Vette has been set at a whopping £109,000 ( $201,000 US) . Mac Haik Chevrolet in Houston, Texas is offering you the chance to buy a 2009 Corvette ZR1 for the low price of $185,000 (just $81,000 over MSRP), thus answering Suze Orman's ZR1 ownership question with a definitive "NO!" Corvette ZR1 chief engineer Tadge Juechter recently sat down to participate in a live chat on GMNext to answer questions about Chevy's new supercar, with topics ranging from fuel-economy to production numbers. GM hasn't run its fuel economy test yet, but in a previous release from the General, it expects the ZR1 to be the most fuel-efficient 600-hp vehicle on the market. Juechter did say that the ZR1, "will be somewhat less [fuel-efficient] than a Z06," which is currently rated at 15/24 by the EPA, "and we expect a small gas-guzzler tax [on the ZR1]." Production will be limited to 2,000 units each year for worldwide consumption and pricing will be revealed sometime this month. Juechter went on to say that ZR1 accessories wouldn't be made available for lesser Corvette models, so buyers won't be able to option up for carbon-ceramic brakes or Michelin tires on their Z06s. When the four-hour race was finished, Oliver Gavin and Olivier Beretta stood on the top step of the victory podium in the GT1 class for a record-tying ninth time in 2007. The "two Ollies" drove their No. 4 Compuware Corvette C6.R to a 30-second victory over the No. 3 Compuware Corvette C6.R of Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen. The pair completed 150 laps of the 2.238-mile road course and finished 11th overall to crown their third championship season together. To prove that red-blooded power mixes easily with a touch of green, Leno partnered with Pratt & Miller – the engineering company that builds and campaigns C6.R Corvettes – to develop a modified Corvette Z06 that is capable of running on E85 ethanol. It was unveiled at the 2007 SEMA Show . More than merely a conversion of the stock LS7 engine to E85 capability, Leno’s alternative-fuel supercar is powered by a custom, 8.2L (500-cubic-inch) all-aluminum small-block V-8 that pumps out approximately 600 horsepower and 585 lb.-ft. of torque.
