Work is under way to develop the hottest ever version of Ingolstadt’s sports coupe, likely to be badged TT RS. It promises to be a real alternative to the Porsche Cayman when it goes on sale in late 2008 in Europe. The TT RS will use a 2.5-litre in-line five-cylinder petrol unit, ten years since Audi last used a similarly designed engine. Early reports indicate that Audi will boost performance to hefty 260kW using twin sequential turbochargers. This entire grunt will be channelled through Audi ’s permanent 4WD quattro system and a six-speed manual ‘box, though the DSG dual-clutch system will also be available as an option. Expect a sporty styling with bespoke wheels, alloy-effect door mirrors, aggressive bumpers, RS-batches on the brakes and sill extensions. Volkswagen’s new 210kW 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine, lined up for a hot version of Volkswagen’s Passat, will be released at the same time in a more refined form, to replace the 3.2-litre V6 currently powering the range-topping TT . ©...

The convertible version of Audi ’s R8 supercar has been spotted testing in Germany without a hint of camouflage material. These latest images of the test car reveal that the new convertible will gain a conventional fabric roof but misses out on the R8’s trademark aluminium side blades. Other major changes for the new Spider that are expected to make it to production will be additional air intakes located behind the seats as well as a pair of safety roll-over bars. The placement of the fuel filler cap will also be changed due to the missing rear pillars, while changes under the sheetmetal will likely include extra chassis strengthening. While the base model will likely stick with the hard-top’s 420hp (313kW) 4.2L V8 engine, there’s talk that Audi may shoehorn the 5.2L V10 from the S6 and S8 sports-saloons into a mid-level model and reserve the 5.0L twin-turbo V10 from the RS6 for a high-performance RS-variant. Not that the Audi S5 isn't fastest enough, but another 100 horsepower or so might make it the best coupe on the planet. Looks like we'll get our wish soon enough as spy photographers caught what looks to be an Audi RS5 testing in Death Valley. It has a more aggressive front end and a larger set of 265/35ZR19 tires too. The signature oval exhaust tips aren't there, but that's probably just a temporary attempt to confuse onlookers. Our hope is that those exhaust pipes are connected to the same 580-hp V10 found in the RS6 sedan. There have got to be cheaper ways to go for a swim, but one driver apparently couldn't find one. The 33-year-old Dutch man from the town of Woerden in the Netherlands went by his local Audi dealership to check out a brand spankin' new R8 supercar... and then proceeded to drive it into the nearest river. The driver was reportedly speeding – 80 mph according to police, but closer to 125 if you ask some of the bystanders – in a 50 zone when he hit a bump, lost control and skidded into a dyke. Although local law enforcement authorities are reportedly investigating the incident, nobody was hurt. The same cannot be said, sadly, for the car, which is reportedly in a repair shop where the dealer's insurance company will surely declare it a write-off. After Intersection magazine gave another Audi product the treatment by lowering it into a swimming pool in England – the same one that Jeremy Clarkson drove a Rolls-Royce into, by the looks of things – we can't help but wonder and worry...

Audi , with the current interest surrounding its brand, is preparing itself with the lovely A5, adding the letters “ RS ” and reflecting the masterpieces that have recently emerged from the German company, such as the RS4, the R8 or the V10 RS6. The challenge to the M3 is far more explicit now, with both V8 high revs, coupès and twin-clutch shift, but the true revolution is in the traction with BMW choosing rear wheel, and Audi splashing out into all-wheel drive. New information on this ferocious coupè arrives from Ingoldstat and Autozeitung. The car won’t have much in common with the more easygoing S5, though some technical aspects will be the same. Audi is maintaining its successful efficiency strategy: the new Audi Q5 , the sports car in the SUV category, is its latest model to combine high performance with low consumption. This progress is underpinned by an extensive package of hi-tech solutions ranging from energy recuperation to engine downsizing. Audi is bringing the new Q5 onto the market equipped with three powerful, sporty engines – one turbo FSI gasoline version and two TDIs, all of which are state-of-the-art units featuring turbocharging and direct fuel injection. The perfect interplay of these two technologies paves the way for downsizing, which involves using supercharging as a means of trimming engine capacity. Do you own a TT but hanker after an R8 ? If so, Siegen-based tuner B&B has the answer. Yes, why bother trading up when you can transform your TT into this?! OK, so the B&B TT is no looker - but the engine stats make interesting reading. With various inlet, exhaust and turbo modifications, B&B has squeezed 362bhp out of the 2.0-litre TFSI four-cylinder engine. Ahrensburg-based tuner SKN has unveiled four stages of tune for the Audi R8 . They begin with a simple ECU upgrade yielding 436bhp, while Stage 3 releases 560bhp thanks to a supercharger and exhaust system. Stage 4 details are only available on request.
