Filed under: In the Autoblog Garage , Coupes , Chrysler, LLC. , Dodge Click above for high-res image gallery of the Dodge Challenger SRT8 Back in September we reviewed the V6-powered Dodge Challenger SE, and our conclusion was that an uninspiring engine and benign handling was trumped by terrific curb appeal and an affordable price tag. The R/T model we reviewed yesterday fared even better, with a near perfect combination of brawn and beauty. It was fun spending time behind the wheel of both the SE and R/T models, but we knew we had to get our hands on a fire-breathing, 425-hp 6.1L HEMI V8 to see how capable the Challenger could be at full tilt. After all, there are few things in life better than classic muscle car looks combined with a brute-force V8. And if there are two available V8 engines, it just makes sense that we'd prefer the Challenger with the most powerful powerplant. Did Dodge hit the mark with its top Challenger? We welcomed the Challenger SRT8 into the Autoblog Garage...

Filed under: Aftermarket , SEMA , Trucks/Pickups , Dodge Click above for hi-res gallery of the four Ram concept trucks We noticed that the Chrysler Group is pretty excited about the Challenger after visiting the Mopar Underground display at SEMA this year. We are too, but it's not just Challengers on display in Vegas. There are also a handful of custom '09 Dodge Ram pickups here, as well. We previewed these four Ram truck concepts recently, all tuned by the automaker's in-house Mopar Underground division. Seeing the trucks in person gave us a better understanding and appreciation of each. Where we previously only had sketches and descriptions, now we have live shots and a sense of these pickups' grandeur. The bright yellow Dodge Ram TRXtreme looks a little less aggressive than the official sketch , but more than capable of tackling the artificial dirt mound set up in the booth. The blue-with-black-stripes Dodge Ram R/T is based on the '09 Ram Sport and looks like a good...

Filed under: SEMA , Time Warp , Chrysler, LLC. , Dodge Click above to take a stroll down Mopar Alley Every year at SEMA we make sure to stop by Mopar Alley where Chrysler brings out some of its more historically significant vehicles. The Challenger was highlighted and everything from a 1971 Prostock Hemi to the current 2009 R/T were on display. There was even a 1970 Dodge Challenger that was one of five used in the movie Vanishing Point and this particular one was used as the main stunt vehicle. There were some pretty cool Mopar trucks as well, including a 1946 Dodge Power Wagon , the 1979 Dodge Lil Red Express , and a 1989 Jeep Cherokee Sport . We especially loved the 1986 Dodge Ram Baja that was raced in Mexico in 1987. Take a trip down Mopar memory lane yourself in the high-resolution gallery below. Filed under: Motorsports , SEMA , Sports/GTs , Dodge Click above for high-res gallery of the new Mopar Drift Dodge Challenger Using the slogan, "if you can dream it, you can build it with Mopar," the Dodge boys introduced Sam Hübinette's 2009 Mopar Dodge Drift Challenger. Team owner Shaun Carlson and driver Samuel Hübinette introduced the car and pointed out some of the unique features, like the 850-hp Hemi underhood. While that should definitely help Sam in his quest to retake the title for Mopar, one additional fun touch should help the team cut their repair bills. The driver's side rear fender has a built-in line of roller blade wheels to keep him skimming along the walls rather than tearing the quarter panels away on contact. We doubt it will hold up to anything harder than a five-mph brush, but it was interesting nonetheless. The car they showed us was actually a cutaway as you'll see from the gallery and hit the jump to read all of the specs. Gallery...

Filed under: Aftermarket , SEMA , Tuners , Coupes , Dodge Click either image for a high-res gallery of Dodge's SEMA-bound Challengers While a V10-powered Challenger is devilishly delectable, our Mopar-loving hearts beat for something a bit more balanced with a healthy dose of motorsports cred. To that end, Dodge created the Challenger Targa to campaign in the Targa Newfoundland enduro earlier this year. Affectionately known as "Samantha," the Challenger began its existence as a Mopar Challenger drag race car, complete with a 392 HEMI V8 crate motor putting 540 hp and 490 lb.-ft. of torque to the rear wheels via a Tremec six-speed manual and a modified rear diff. The green hue of the Challenger Targa is pulled from the Viper, but the snake's influence doesn't stop at aesthetics. A KW race-ready suspension, six-piston calipers with 380mm Stop-Tech rotors (front) and 355mm, rear discs with four-pot calipers are all culled from the V10 'Ring-slayer. In addition to...

Filed under: Aftermarket , SEMA , Tuners , Trucks/Pickups , Chrysler, LLC. , Dodge With gas prices still leaving people numb, the Dodge Ram R/T probably won't get the reception Chrysler wants - but that doesn't mean the automaker won't give it some good car show loving: Mopar is bringing a 'roided up version of the truck to this year's SEMA Show in Las Vegas. The blue bruiser gets the 5.7-liter HEMI with 390 horsepower, good for enough giddy up to shoot to the truck to 60 mph in under six seconds. The body gets more of the Mr. Olympia treatment: a bulging hood with dual intakes over a deep air dam, a bed cover with a spoiler, a lowered suspension over 22-inch wheels for that "Don't mess!" aggression, and obligatory racing stripes. We like the sound of all that. Come November 4, let the posedown begin. [Source: 4 Wheels Blog ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Motorsports , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Dodge Click above for a high-res gallery of the Challenger Drag Race Package This weekend, Dodge officially unveiled two Challenger Drag Race Package cars that made their inaugural runs down the 1/4 mile track in front of thousands of race fans at the Mopar Mile-High Nationals near Denver, CO. Based on the standard Challenger SRT8, each of the Drag Race Package cars features a completely stripped body that has the body sealer, sound deadener, and undercoat all removed. Additional components are also left out including the windshield wipers, HVAC system, air bags, rear seats, power steering, exhaust system, side-impact beams, rear bumper beam, and more. Further weight is saved by using composite and poycarbonate components, and overall a total of 1000 pounds has been shaved off the car. Additional changes include repositioning the engine for a better driveline angle, a slightly shortened wheelbase, a bolt-in crossmember, and solid engine mounts...

Filed under: Aftermarket , Motorsports , Dodge 2006 Dodge Challenger Super Stock concept With a name like Challenger, Dodge's new muscle car had better put down some serious quarter-mile times or else be able to propel itself into outer space. Fortunately, Chrysler's performance parts division Mopar is preparing to do one (if not the other) when it unveils its new Drag Race Package for the Challenger at the annual Mopar Mile-High Nationals at the Bandimere Speedway in Denver next week. While specific details on the package - which we previewed in our exclusive video last week - remain scarce before the official debut, the Challenger Drag Race Package marks the 70th anniversary of Mopar and forty years since the company's last factory-built drag-race package. Based on the Challenger SRT8, the Drag Race Package features a composite "Body-in-White" direct from the factory and a host of lightweight components, to say nothing of all the parts being deleted for drag-strip...

Filed under: Aftermarket , SEMA , Tuners , Coupes , Dodge Click above for a high-res gallery of the Dodge Challenger SRT-8. Mopar can't let Speedfactory have all the fun supercharging the Dodge Challenger SRT-8 , so when the SEMA show rolls around this November, the in-house tuners of all things pentastar will unveil a blown Challenger of their own. The Mopar-modified SRT-8 will be fitted with all the show-going kit you'd expect at the world's largest aftermarket expo, including a cold-air intake, high-flow cat-back exhaust and a variety of wheel designs and sizes. The details of the blower are still unknown, but with Speedfactory boosting the 6.1-liter HEMI V8 from 425 to 630 hp with its Stage 2 mods, we'd suspect similar figures from the Mopar kit. Filed under: Motorsports , Coupes , Videos , Chrysler, LLC. , Dodge Those of you steeped in drag racing lore are undoubtedly familiar with the 1968 HEMI-powered Dodge Darts and Plymouth Barracudas. These limited edition, track-bound '68 package cars brought out some of the biggest names in drag racing and helped solidify the automaker as a force to be reckoned with down the 1320. When Dodge unveiled the Challenger drag race package at SEMA , we knew the Mopar crew had something serious up its sleeves, and we've got an exclusive clip of what's to come. Chrysler isn't releasing the details on this non-street-legal, drag-race ready model yet, but earlier reports suggest an overall weight savings of around 800 pounds by stripping the interior down to the bare essentials (one seat, a set of gauges and no sound deadening material), nixing the wipers and A/C and replacing many of the body panels with composite material. The front brakes will also be modified, along with the rear...

Filed under: Car Buying , Coupes , Chrysler , Dodge Click the image above for more pics of the Challenger SRT8 If you're one of the lucky 6,400 customers to lay claim to the 425 hp Dodge Challenger SRT8 , we have good news. The first 1,000 special edition Challengers have already been built, and they're en-route to a dealer near you. For those of you that won't be getting your Hemi-powered muscle car in the first wave, you won't have to wait long, either. Every SRT Challenger will be produced by the beginning of July, which means Woodward should be full of good-looking retro coupes come August. If you want a 6.1L Challenger, you're going to have to hit eBay or wait for 2009, because all 2008 models have been spoken for. The Challenger has been one of the few pieces of good news surrounding the Pentastar of late, and a hot product couldn't be coming at a better time. We know gas if $4 per gallon and V8 muscle cars aren't exactly what the doctor ordered, but we're...

Filed under: Aftermarket , SUVs , Etc. , Jeep Mopar has been selling products for Jeep vehicles for a while, but in an announcement at the NADA show, it's finally decided to move beyond bike racks and vinyl care products. Chrysler's performance parts division will begin offering the equipment buyers normally purchase through aftermarket firms soon after they leave the dealership. While the first run of parts - everything from carbon fiber appliqués to stereo systems - aren't what you'd call Rubicon-rated, Mopar will also be offering heavy-duty bumpers equipped with winches, lifted suspension setups and other off-road ready kit. In addition to the product push, dealers and owners can sit down in front of the new Electronic Accessory System - dubbed EASy - where they can customize their ride as they see fit. The system is only available at dealers right now, but Mopar will be launching an online site on March 31st so potential mud-pluggers can soup-up their rides from...

Filed under: Motorsports , Sports/GTs , Chrysler , Dodge Dodge Challenger Super Stock shown from 2006 SEMA Show Just like in the '60s, some people will take their new 2008 Dodge Challengers to the drags. Chrysler is reportedly ready to make this very easy for new Challenger owners. Allpar is reporting that within a few weeks, there will issue forth from Chrysler a Super Stock special version of the Challenger. The intended application is Stock Eliminator drag racing, and the cars get their own VINs and lots of lightening. Powering drivers down the strip will be versions of the Hemi and 5.9 liter Magnum V8s, twisting through manual or automatic boxes. Jettisoning things like wipers, HVAC, sound deadening and seats make for a Challenger that's definitely not road-ready, but much lighter for track applications. 800 pounds have reportedly been trimmed out of the car through the omission of equipment and special composite body parts. Mechanicals have been modified to better suit the...
