Filed under: Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Etc. , Mercedes-Benz Say you have a Mercedes-Benz W140 S-Class from two generations ago, but you really want is a Mercedes W221, the current generation car. Well, what else is an individualistic plutocrat to do other than give a willing tuner an unknown (and seemingly substantial) quantity of cash to make a few changes? We can only guess at what amount of time and money was needed to fabricate and swap this new front and rear (which we'd like to think cost a lot less than a used W221 in decent shape), and we can't say we're not startled by the result. But our opinion matters not: the car lives, it's here to stay, and the owner must be happy... and maybe a little odd. Check out pics of the FrankenMerc in the gallery below. Hat tip to reader AMG! Filed under: Trends , Japan , Marketing/Advertising , BMW , Mercedes-Benz , Volkswagen , Volvo , Earnings/Financials , Tokyo Auto Salon Although Volvo has already said that it would not participate in this October's Tokyo Motor Show, the Swedish automaker's German contemporaries are reportedly dragging their feet on similar public announcements in an effort to not be the first from their country to do so. According to a brief Automotive News item, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are "unlikely to participate" as part of an effort to limit expenditures, and Volkswagen AG and supplier Bosch are among those said to be on the fence. Speaking about the pullout possibilities, an unnamed Automobilwoche (AN's Germanic sister publication) source has said that "No one wants to be in the unpopular position of being the first to announce their exit." Perhaps, but that didn't stop Volvo from letting some air out of Tokyo's balloons, nor did it keep the Detroit 3 from doing...

Filed under: SUVs , Plants/Manufacturing , Daimler , Mercedes-Benz , Rumormill Last week, we told you how despite the downturn, Daimler is upping its investment in the state of Michigan, coming to terms with the city of Ann Arbor to build a new hybrid and electric R&D facility . Now, Automotive News is reporting that the automaker is expected to actually expand its Vance, Alabama production plant. If the rumors are true, the Mercedes-Benz plant (which currently builds GL, M, and R class vehicles) will benefit from a $290 million investment that is to begin within 60 days. The news evidently leaked out after company officials contacted the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority about property and sales tax breaks (which it apparently received). The expansion news comes at an odd time, as not only has the automaker's sales been flagging in the U.S. (down 20 percent in February year-over-year, admittedly much better than the market plunge of 41.4 percent), but sales of...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Euro , Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , BMW , Mercedes-Benz Both Mercedes-Benz and BMW have seen recent design-chief departures, and now there's been a defection. Karim Habib, who had a hand in the F01 7 Series while at BMW, has left the Roundel for the three-pointed star. Habib's move to Mercedes has him overseeing Mercedes' advanced design studio in Stuttgart, working with MBZ design chief Gorden Wagener. Tasked with the brand's F cars, Habib's work will be looking two generations ahead, to the cars after the next new ones. Let's hope that the F700 goes on the same kind of de-uglification program as the 750 went on before it becomes an S-Class. Thanks for the tip, Horatiu! Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes-Benz , Brabus Click above for high-res gallery of the Brabus G V12 S Biturbo Nothing says "happy birthday" like 700 horsepower and nearly 1000 lb-ft of torque. That's what Brabus figures, at least, and we're with them. To mark the 30th anniversary of the indomitable Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen, Brabus presented the G V12 S Biturbo here at the Geneva Motor Show , and it could hardly be missed in the middle of the Palexpo show floor. The tuned twin-turbo 6.3-liter V12 sits in a tricked out G-Wagen decked out in black with LED headlamps, custom bodywork, black leather everything, a 163-mph top end and a physics-defying 4.3-second spring to 60 mph. At nearly half a million on the sticker, you're not likely to see one parked at the local mini mall - unless you live in car-bonkers Abu Dhabi where a supposedly McLaren-powered G-Wagen was spotted last year - so better check it out in the galleries...

Filed under: Trucks/Pickups , Euro , Mercedes-Benz As a small step that could be considered a healthy vote of confidence in Iraq's return to stability, Mercedes has established a corporate representative office in Baghdad. Daimler set up shop in Erbil, Iraq last February, opening a training center that would get mechanics ready for coming Mercedes products. By installing a corporate representative, the company will have someone on the ground to figure out how best to introduce new Mercedes products to the country. The rep will focus on examining and developing the market for trucks and buses, which Daimler should have all to itself for a while. Filed under: Aftermarket , Concept Cars , Tuners , SUVs , Mercedes-Benz Click above to view the RENNtech G-Wagen concept in our hi-res gallery Thirty years is a long time. Long enough for a lot of people to come up with some wildly different ideas. Mercedes couldn't make up its mind on how to celebrate the big three-o of its workhorse sport-ute, so they came out with two special editions , one aimed at luxury buyers and another for hard-core rock-crawling, desert-traversing off-road enthusiasts. RENNtech has another idea altogether. The truck you see here is just a conceptual sketch at the moment, but even bound to paper it looks mean enough to send HUMMERs and Rambo Lambos running for cover with their tailpipes between their legs. The same Florida-based Mercedes tuner that brought us the Pikes Peak GLK hybrid concept is responsible for the design, but beyond the so-ugly-it's-almost-beautiful bodywork, the RENNtech concept calls not for the G55 AMG version it's toyed with previously...

Filed under: SUVs , Mercedes-Benz , Special/Limited Editions Click above for hi-res images of the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen EDITION30 and EDITION30.PUR The rest of the industry may change, but nothing can stop the Geländewagen. To give you an idea of how long it's been around, consider that the G was originally designed for military contract from the Shah of Iran, who was a major shareholder in Daimler-Benz. Known as the G-Wagen for short or G-Class in new speak, Mercedes (or Magna-Steyr, actually) has been hand-building it in Austria for 30 years now. We've already alerted you to the occasion , but now Mercedes-Benz is celebrating by launching a special anniversary model. Two, actually. The EDITION30 is the more premium of the two, a special G-Class based on the W463-chassis G500 and spec'd out with a unique leather and wood interior and Platinum Black paintjob. The EDITION30.PUR is more hard-core, based on the older W461 chassis with G280 CDI running gear, and decked out...
