  • Detroit-area café hosting 240-hour-long concert for auto workers

Filed under: Etc. , Plants/Manufacturing , UAW/Unions , Lifestyle , Event Alert In case you didn't know this was going on, Detroit is in the grips of the Assembly Line Concert, a 240-hour non-stop shebang that still has more than 100 hours to go. A. J. O'Neil, a Detroit-area coffee shop owner, decided to attempt a record-breaking charity event that would assist, support, and call attention to the American auto worker. He's done it by trying to line up 240 acts -- from professional bands to politicians (no, really) to Detroiters who just want to play a ditty to show their love -- that will perform one hour sets for ten straight days. And even though the folks in the logo are obviously listening to Skynyrd, the Free Bird folks won't be appearing. So far there are 213 acts scheduled. There's still time to play if you've got the feeling, and if you just want to watch, you can head down any time of the day or check out the concert's live feed . [Source: Assembly Line...
  • Taking Stock: GM shares hit 75-year low, Visteon delisted after trading at .02 cents

Filed under: Trends , Government/Legal , Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , Earnings/Financials With both evidence and speculation mounting that General Motors and Tier-1 supplier Visteon Corp. have bleak futures, both companies' stock shares continue to get hammered, with GM's shares trading as low as $1.40 Friday morning and Visteon dropping from 7 cents to 2 cents on Thursday. For GM, that's its lowest price since May 23, 1933, and the price for Visteon is so low that the New York Stock Exchange delisted it - its last day on the exchange was yesterday. Investors are dumping their shares as both companies look increasingly like bankruptcy is in their futures unless additional government support can be secured - in fact, Visteon's declaration all but a lock. The supplier is widely expected to default on a $15+ million interest payment soon, a move that would trigger bankruptcy. • Woodward Dream Cruise retreating back across 8 Mile

Filed under: Time Warp , Misc. Auto Shows Last year, organizers for the Woodward Dream Cruise teamed up with Motorcities National Heritage Area to bring the classic car festivities all the way from the southern suburbs in Oakland County to Downtown Detroit. Ironically, it was the first year that the longstanding event officially entered the Motor City itself. Next year, the Dream Cruise will retreat back across 8 Mile and out of Detroit. Why? The economy, of course, as it seems the Detroit-specific programs didn't earn enough money to repay the costs associated with promoting and running them. The good news is that the 2009 edition of the Dream Cruise is still on schedule to run on a hot, humid Woodward weekend in August, and Autoblog will be there to bring you live coverage as always. • 2010 Detroit Auto Show media days cut down by one, starts on Monday

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Trends It looks like we'll have one less day to report on all of the debuts from Detroit next year. According to the Detroit News , the North American International Auto Show 's organizers have decided to cut the number of media preview days from three to two for next year's show. The move will bring the show in-line with other domestic shows that typically only have two days of media press conferences. The 2010 Detroit Auto Show will officially kick off on Monday, rather than on its traditional Sunday launch. There will be about 30 time slots for press conferences during two full days of festivities, eliminating the usual half day on day three. Industry days will continue to be held on Wednesday and Thursday. While this probably means very little to all of you, we're looking forward to sleeping in on Sunday. Hey, if nothing else, we figure to be that much better-rested come Monday so that we can bring you all of the latest news. That said...
  • North Dakota reps take a local approach to saving Motown

Filed under: Car Buying , Etc. , Government/Legal North Dakota state rep. Lisa Wolf (D-Minot) has sponsored, with bipartisan support, an "emergency measure" in the legislature that if passed, could save ND car buyers some pretty decent money. The proposed legislation would eliminate the state's motor vehicle sales, excise, and use taxes on new rides purchased before June 30, 2010. Oh, yeah: there's a significant catch -- the tax break would only apply to vehicles from the Detroit 3. Tax breaks as a stimulus? No-brainer. But in this case, it's probably not music to the ears of Wolf's fellow North Dakotans who happen to own automobile dealerships that sell non-Detroit-brand vehicles. Politically, it seems counterintuitive for a group of lawmakers (who presumably hope to be re-elected someday) to effectively screw some local constituent business owners in favor of others, all in the name of ultimately helping Detroit. • Detroit 2009: The odds, the ends

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Etc. , Marketing/Advertising Click above for a high-res gallery of odds & ends from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show Auto shows throw massive amounts of promotions, marketing, branding, communications and event planning brainpower into one little bowl. Everyone is trying to be distinctive, and sometimes they do it with the cars, sometimes with the merchandise, sometimes with lures that are meant to get you to their stand at all. Yet there are only so many positions in which to mount a car and so many ways to put a logo on a jacket, right? Inevitably, that means you come across a few nifty novelties, and you also discover a few more things that fell through the cracks and make you wonder "What is this... doing here?" These are few of those odds and ends we found at last week's 2009 Detroit Auto Show . • Detroit 2009: Hot Wheels

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show Sure, there were a few brands missing from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show , but we never got the feeling that things were bleak... until we went looking for ten cool wheels. After walking the floor twice, we were able to come up with nine. America's premiere auto show had left us walking in circles, one wheel short, debating whether an ugly wheel with internally-mounted calipers was cool enough to make the list. And it was then that the real tragedy of this show hit us: not the subtracted brand count, but the lack of concept cars. With money reduced to growing on tumbleweeds and not on trees, those big-dollar flights of fancy had been (mostly) grounded. Instead, there were some magnificent production vehicles (the humongous 2010 Ford Taurus FTW!), and hereby we present the best wheels we found among them. • Detroit 2009: Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition is an excuse to issue a press release

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Sedans/Saloons , Saab , Special/Limited Editions Click above for a high-res gallery of the Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition We really feel for the folks at Saab, and not just because we love the 9-5 SportCombi and that we pined for a Turbo 900 with the Aero package for what seemed like all of the '80s. Yet look ahead 20 years - specifically to the 2009 Detroit Auto Show - and all we have to get excited about is the Saab 9-5 Griffin Edition. Frankly, the press release is more exciting. The grille is spruced up with matte chrome. Besides the fact that it looks like plastic, doesn't a matte finish defeat the purpose of chrome? Inside, as always with Saab, the two-tone seats are terrific places to plop one's rear, and the things covered in leather have the look and feel you want in your quirky luxury sedan. Elsewhere... well, it's the same thing Saab owners have been looking at for years, but with some of the plastic in different places. It isn't...
