Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , Geneva Motor Show , Green Click above for high-res gallery of the Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta concept Beauty may be in the eye of the proverbial beholder and all that, but the Italdesign Quaranta wasn't quite the beauty of the Geneva ball. And while Giorgetto Giugiaro, the celebrated designer at the studio's helm, has more iconic designs to his name than we could possibly list here, his latest was not his best, easily outclassed by the Giugiaro Mustang concept with which we fell so deeply in love and the Ferrari GG50 he built for himself. The Quaranta concept was built to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Italdesign Giugiaro, and features the Lexus RX400h's mid-mounted hybrid 3.3-liter V6 powerplant driving all four wheels through a CVT and supported by a solar panel on the unfortunately styled nose. Think of archrival Pininfarina's Maserati Birdcage concept crossed with Robocop 3 and you're beginning to get the picture...

Toyota and Nissan pioneered the idea of modern compact pickup trucks in the U.S. market, but Toyota has largely left it behind over the past decade. The new A-BAT concept pickup is 27 inches shorter than an extended cab Tacoma and nine inches shorter than the regular cab model. In profile, the uni-body truck looks somewhat like a shorter Honda Ridgeline with rounder contours. The A-BAT is the first Toyota to have a mid-gate allowing cargo longer than the standard four-foot bed to extend into the cab. With the tailgate down, drivers can pack the proverbial 4x8 sheet of plywood. Power...

Filed under: Concept Cars , LA Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Minivans/MPVs Click on the image above to view in high-resolution Volkswagen didn't appear to take this year's LA auto show very seriously - its press kit appears to have been assembled by a kindergarten class on a budget. The car it unveiled here in the City of Angels was little more than a redressed version the van concept they showed in Tokyo, as well. The space up! blue takes the up! space and adds a hydrogen-electric hybrid powerplant and a solar panel on the roof. Volkswagen says the van will go into production, in one form or another, but without the advanced powerplant. And likely without the solar roof, either. They're "Pie in the sky" as the Volkswagen board member called it. And so, we're back where we were in Tokyo (only with a cameo by former pro baller John "Spider" Salley). That being said, the car itself is a quirky take on the retro-modern theme that could prove popular...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , Tokyo Motor Show , Toyota var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/design/Tokyo_keeps_the_weird_ones_coming_with_Hi_CT_concept'; Toyota's Hi-CT aims to be the youthful, edgy, cool kid on the concept block. With a front end only a Mac truck and a locomotive union could love, the Hi-CT has an over exaggerated beltline and short overhangs that can easily dispatch the tight corners found in Tokyo proper. The rear deck can be used for weatherproof cargo or can house either a pair of seats while lounging on the beach or a small-size trunk. Power comes courtesy of a 1.5-liter engine mated to a hybrid motor, complete with plug-in capability, while a AC100V accessory socket lets users plug in their favorite portable electronics once they've arrived at their destination. Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , Japan , Tokyo Motor Show , Toyota var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/design/Toyota_RiN_concept_wants_you_to_relax_be_healthy'; Designers have lofty goals for their concepts, and the Toyota RiN is no different. With a massive greenhouse, seats that keep your spine in its proper position, an oxygen-level conditioner and humidifier, plus a meter that gauges your mood through the steering wheel and then displays a color based on your psychological state, Toyota thinks it can make better, happier motorists, that are more aware of nature and the society that infuses it. Hyperbolize much? Other interesting features include the leaf-shaped gas and brake, glass that makes the world outside seem brighter and sliding doors with glass that wraps underneath the floor providing a view of the road below. Plus, you can motor along (supposedly) knowing that when your headlights are on, you won't blind any pedestrians or oncoming motorists because the light...
