  • Paris 2008: BMW X1 concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Paris Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , BMW Click above for a high-res gallery of the BMW X1 concept We're trying to find some redeeming qualities in the BMW X1 concept , but after staring at it on the show stand and navigating our way through BMW's lengthy press release (after the jump), we're at a loss. Built atop the 3-series platform and likely motivated by a handful of gasoline and diesel powerplants when it hits the road next year, the X1 has all the charm of the X3 (as in very little), will feature similar interior dimensions to its lower-riding cousin, the 1-series five-door, and has to make due with the new 7-series' upright schnoz. The X1 isn't quite ready to board the failboat, but it's on its way to the docks. • VIDEO: Cloaked BMW X1 Concept is a hip-hop wannabe

Filed under: Concept Cars , Paris Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , BMW Click the image above to view the teaser video of the BMW X1 Concept Rocking graffiti styles we haven't seen on the street since the late 90s, BMW has put out a 40-second teaser video of a covered X1 Concept being unloaded from an enclosed trailer ahead of its debut next week at the Paris Motor Show . Our skateboarding, urban protagonist tags the letters "M," "C" and "X", using each letter to spell out some lofty buzz words about the X1's desired demographic, simultaneously stoking our curiosity and leaving us shaking our heads. Check the video after the break and stay tuned on Thursday for the official reveal, live from Paris. • Acura 2+1 design study takes superman shield to next level

Filed under: Concept Cars , Sports/GTs , Supercars , Acura Click above for high-res gallery of the Acura 2+1 Concept Acura's new design language, as seen on the 2009 TL , is fronted by a shield-like appendage that has received mixed reviews. The Acura 2+1 -- the numbers describe the seating arrangement -- by design student Leon Paz is what would happen if you took the shield theme to one natural conclusion. By maintaining the edge throughout the concept's "modern baroque styling," Paz has come up we something we kinda dig. The body is fashioned from a plastic that is harder than fiberglass, and Paz has done a great job in creating lines that evoke skin stretched over a frame. The upper surface is one continuous window that shows off the twin-turbo V6 and the Acura logo for the cylinder covers. There is no hood -- at your yearly service, the dealer would lift the glass and perform any engine maintenance. The 2+1 would be an aspirational step for those who want an NSX but...
  • Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION previews new E-Class

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Wagons/Estates , Euro , Paris Motor Show , Mercedes-Benz Click above to view high-res gallery of the Mercedes-Benz ConceptFASCINATION When the doors open at the Paris Motor Show next month, Mercedes-Benz will be giving everyone a sneak peek of the new E-Class front-end styling. No, not in the form of the new E-Class itself, which will be unveiled at a later date, but in the ConceptFASCINATION, an attractive shooting brake concept based on the upcoming E-Class Coupe's architecture and featuring the new E's front-end styling. Gone are the round headlamps we've become accustomed to. In their place are new "rhomboid" lamps that, on the show car at least, incorporate fiber-optic driving lights. The grille will likely be the same one seen on the new E Coupe, while we'd expect the sedan to have the traditional grille-and-hood-ornament combo instead. Power comes from Mercedes' new 2.2L, 204-horsepower BlueTEC (with AdBlue) 4-cylinder...
  • Pics aplenty: MINI Crossover Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Paris Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , MINI Click above for a high-res gallery of the MINI Crossover Concept Judging by your response to the MINI Crossover Concept in our original post , the new micro 'ute's styling leaves a bit to be desired. We're not entirely sold on the idea or its execution ourselves, but have decided to hold off final judgment until we see it in all its conceptual glory next month at the Paris Motor Show . In the meantime, we've assembled 48 high-res images of the MINI Crossover Concept into a gallery, giving you a clear view of the jacked-up 4x4's minivanesque sliding side door, folding cloth roof and odd glass sat-nav. Check all the pics below. Gallery: MINI Crossover Concept Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Paris Preview: 2010 MINI Crossover Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Paris Motor Show , Crossovers/CUVs , MINI Click above for a gallery of the MINI Crossover Concept It's finally arrived folks... and it's not the coming apocalypse. MINI has released the first official images of the Crossover Concept, proving that BMW not only has a sense of humor, but that it's serious about bringing an all-wheel-drive MINI to market in 2010. These initial images give us a clear indication of how future MINIs will be styled, and if BMW's reputation for making only a few revisions from concept to production hold true, this is very close to the finished product. Measuring about six inches wider and taller than the Clubman, the Crossover Concept features a five-door body style, but that's where the similarities end. The right rear door has a conventional hinge, but the left door slides out and back, minivan-style. The rear hatch ditches the Clubman's dual doors and is instead fitted with a single panel that opens to the right...
  • Rumormill: BMW 8 Series on the way, no M-version planned

Filed under: Concept Cars , Sports/GTs , Euro , BMW , Rumormill Click on the image above for our high-res Concept CS gallery With their scopes aimed squarely at the upcoming Porsche Panamera and Mercedes-Benz CLS , BMW's M performance division is rumored to be working on their own four-door luxury GT for a 2010 launch. With its styling based heavily on the BMW Concept CS (pictured above), the platform for the new flagship will be shared with the new 7 Series. Under the hood, most expect to see a 6.0-liter V12 based on the current M5's V10, or a twin-turbocharged V8 like the one rumored for the next-gen M5. Even though both of those engines promise prodigious amounts of power, and the lightened chassis will be tuned for performance, BMW insists the new car will not be badged an M8. Regardless, we seem to recall that the lack of an M badge on the mid-90's BMW 850CSi didn't seem to deter enthusiasts. Gallery: BMW Concept CS [Source: Drive.com ] Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Moscow 2008: Lada shows off C-Cross concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Hatchbacks , Misc. Auto Shows Click above for hi-res gallery of the Lada C-Cross concept The Moscow Auto Show is underway and Damon's on site with camera in hand. The car you see here is the Lada C-Cross Concept, which looks kinda like a Chinese knock-off of a last-gen Euro Ford Focus with added ground clearance. The C-Cross show car presumably gives a sneak peek at what a future AvtoVAZ car-based crossover might look like, and if we had to guess, a production version probably isn't too far off. We'll pass on it, though. Our hearts and minds forever belong to the Lada Niva , whose old-school looks are like visual comfort food. Plus, something tells us that this C-Cross thing wouldn't do nearly as well underwater . Gallery: Lada C-Cross [Source: The Auto Channel ] All photos Copyright (C)2008 Damon Lavrinc / Weblogs, Inc. • Lotus develops Concept Ice Vehicle for Antarctic expedition

Filed under: Concept Cars , Etc. , Videos , Lotus , UK Click above for high-res gallery of the Lotus Concept Ice Vehicle We can forget all about the price of gas when we get news like this. Sure, we'll probably never ride in the Concept Ice Vehicle (CIV), but just knowing that folks at Lotus are working on things like this while we sleep... well, it's like finding out that there is a Santa Claus. The CIV was developed to aid research for the Moon Regan TransAntarctic Expedition . The biofuel powered, propeller-driven trike on skids is 4.5 meters long and 4.5 meters wide with an independent suspension all around. It also has an ice penetrating radar to detect crevasses and is light enough for a man to pull it across difficult terrain, which basically makes it an Elise for explorers. It also appears to have a spiked "foot" under the cockpit, perhaps for stopping on icy terrain. The CIV will lead the way for two other, heavier support vehicles as the explorers make their...
  • Transformers mystery car revealed as Corvette Centennial Design Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Chevrolet , GM Jalopnik's Auto Insider has gotten the scoop on the Corvette-like concept that's been floating around the set of the new Transformers flick, Revenge of the Fallen . According to their sources, the design study will debut sometime next year ahead of the Transformers sequel, but won't foretell the future of the next-generation C7 Corvette. Rather, it called the Corvette Centennial Design Concept and was developed to celebrate General Motors' 100-year celebration. The Corvette Centennial Design Concept takes cues from past 'Vettes - from the Stingray to today - and incorporates a Camaro-inspired grille, massive rear fenders and a quad-tip exhaust. All that said, the Centennial concept supposedly wont' influence future Corvettes - for better or worse. [Source: Jalopnik ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • London 2008: Honda OSM concept roadster says, "Cheerio!"

Filed under: Concept Cars , Convertibles , Green , Honda , Misc. Auto Shows Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Honda OSM Honda says that the OSM roadster on display at the 2008 British Motor Show is merely a design study, but given that "design study" is frequently a euphemism for "future design language," we wonder if we're seeing the next iteration of Honda car styling. Frankly, we hope so, because this is worlds better than what we've seen from the automaker of late, from the Accord right on up to the bland and bloated Pilot. The OSM, short for Open Study Model, is a shapely two-seat convertible that we'd be happy to drive today. Well, maybe with headlamps that weren't lightsaber-sized. Other than that, we love the jaunty look, especially in back , where the taillamps sweep gently from one side of the car to the other. Since it's a styling exercise, there's no specific powertrain combination associated with it, but Honda assures us that...
  • Transformers Corvette concept shows some tush

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Chevrolet , GM Click above for more shots of the "Mystery Vette" Someone slipped Jalopnik a new pair of shots of the mysterious Corvette concept that's appearing in next year's Transformers sequel. So far, we've seen good views of the car from the front and side , but rear-end shots had yet to surface. Well, that's over. The concept -- now a confirmed product of the GM Design studios (note the plate in back), has large ducts in back that mimic the openings in front and presumably also hide the car's taillamps. Four big centrally-mounted exhaust outlets poke through the bodywork as well. Frankly, the rear view is the car's least appealing, with that chunky boattail mixed in with all those sharp angles. There's also a new detail shot of the front quarter , which focuses on that very traditional Corvette fender shape. Is it just a movie character or also a concept that GM's going to drop on us somewhere...
  • Rendered Speculation: 2010 Plymouth Road Runner Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Rendered Speculation Yes, we know the Plymouth brand went extinct a few years ago, and Mopar Enthusiast magazine obviously knows that as well, but that didn't stop them from taking part in some wishful thinking. Their August/September issue features their vision of a 2010 Plymouth Road Runner concept car that takes styling cues from the '71-'72 model years. Features include 21-inch front and 22-inch rear magnesium 5-spoke wheels, LED taillights, and 14-inch Brembo brakes. Under the hood is HEMI power, with the 5.7L V8 coming as standard, and 6.1L and 7.0L available as options mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. While we doubt the Plymouth brand will be making a comeback just to resurrect the Road Runner name, we could definitely see another 2-door LX car with Chrysler badging. Thanks for the tip, Tim! • Volkswagen debuts zero-emission Tiguan HyMotion in the U.S.

Filed under: Concept Cars , SUVs , Green , Volkswagen Click above for a high-res gallery of the Tiguan HyMotion Volkswagen has shown off its Tiguan HyMotion Fuel Cell Concept for the first time in California. Technically a hydrogen-electric hybrid, the five-passenger SUV based on the Volkswagen Tiguan features a hydrogen fuel cell system for primary motivation and an electric motor for assistance (the electric motor pulls power from a 6.8 Ampere-hour lithium-ion battery that is recharged by recuperating braking energy). The VW hybrid generates 107 horsepower on hydrogen alone. When the electric motor kicks-in, the total output increases to 134 horsepower. According to VW, that is enough power to push the Tiguan HyMotion to 60 mph in about 14 seconds and a top speed is 93 mph. While the performance is less-than-stellar, you have to remember that the Tiguan HyMotion produces zero tailpipe emissions. Yes, the only thing coming out of the pipe is clean water vapor. It's a concept, however...
  • Mid-engine, MR2-powered Aygo Crazy is a real Japanese Shogun

Filed under: Concept Cars , Hatchbacks , Toyota Click above for high-res gallery of the Toyota Aygo Crazy What happens when you take a mundane Toyota Aygo microcar and mate it to the go-fast parts of a Toyota MR2 ? You get the Aygo Crazy ( Get it? I-Go-Crazy ). While this one-off concept will never see production, it does offer us car nuts some insight as to what fun manufacturers can have with automotive inbreeding and some serious coin. At best, the stock Toyota Aygo putts around with a 1.0-liter gasoline engine under its front hood that is good for about 67 horsepower, and a 14-second crawl to 60 mph. The engineers at Toyota spent about £100,000 (close to $200,000) ripping the wheezer out and replacing it with a mid-mounted turbocharged 1.8-liter engine. With the new powerplant cranking out 197 horsepower, and a manual transmission sending it to the rear wheels, the 2,200-pound Aygo Crazy sprints to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds. If the go-pedal is held to the floor, the genetic...
