  • BREAKING: GM and Chrysler talking about merger

Filed under: Etc. , Government/Legal , Hirings/Firings/Layoffs , Plants/Manufacturing , Chrysler, LLC. , GM Our heads are still reeling from one of the most tumultuous weeks on record, both for the financial world and the auto industry. But despite our best efforts to drown our concerns in Racer5 IPA, the hits keep coming and this time, it's courtesy of the New York Times . The Gray Lady is reporting that General Motors and Chrysler have been in talks about a possible merger for the past month and that two unnamed sources say that the chances of the deal going through are "50-50." With GM's stock prices ending the week below $5 a share and Cerberus - the private equity firm that owns Chrysler - grasping at straws any and all straws, including continued talks with Nissan/Renault, a merger of unequals is two parts disturbing and one part intriguing. Cerberus' people haven't been returning phone calls and the only comment offered to the NYT from the General's...
  • GM on ZR1 cancellation rumor: "Not true."

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Plants/Manufacturing , Supercars , Chevrolet , GM , Rumormill The rumormill is a funny thing, and sometimes, it can run amok. This appears to be one of those times. The DigitalCorvettes.com forum posted a note earlier this evening suggesting that Corvette ZR1 production has been halted and that the ZR1 may be cancelled. A post on dealer Rick "Corvette" Conti's blog , linked in the referenced DigitalCorvettes thread, added to the intrigue. Autoblog has contacted GM's Terry Rhadigan, who handles global communications for the Chevrolet brand. We presented the DigitalCorvettes link and asked for an official resonse. His was very clear: "Not true." Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • LA Preview: Saab 9-4X shows up early

Filed under: LA Auto Show , Crossovers/CUVs , GM , Saab The LA Auto Show is still a couple months away, but images of vehicles set to be unveiled in the land of fruits and nuts are already leaking onto the web. GM's Chilean website had the above photo of the production Saab 9-4X available for all to see earlier today, so now we know the production model looks almost identical to the 9-4X Biopower concept from last year's Detroit Auto Show . We'd be interested to see if the concept's integrated tail pipes and large front/side air dams make it to production but, judging from spy photos we've seen, probably not. The 9-4X will be built on the same platform as the upcoming front- or all-wheel-drive Cadillac SRX , which will also be unveiled this auto show season. We don't have many details on the 9-4X just yet, but it will have a turbocharged 2.0L engine with 245 hp and 265 lb-ft mated to a six-speed automatic. The concept also ran on ethanol, which is also likely for...
  • Officially Official: GM reveals the 2011 Chevy Volt!

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Sedans/Saloons , Green , Hatchbacks , Chevrolet , GM Click above for high-res gallery of 2011 Chevy Volt Everyone who has been waiting with bated breath for the past year and a half to see the production version of the Chevy Volt can now breathe a big sigh of relief. After some extremely unflattering press shots shots were accidentally released last week, people were extremely disappointed with what appeared to be little more than a Prius clone. Anyone who spends time photographing cars knows how hard it can be to make them look good and how easy it is to make them look really awful. Unfortunately, those shots that were unapproved and never supposed to be released anyway fell into the latter category. The car that GM rolled out this morning as part of its centennial celebration in Detroit is a much more attractive machine that while different from the concept is still very attractive. Rather than the egg shape look we saw, it's actually much more like...
  • BREAKING: 2011 Chevy Volt revealed!

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Chevrolet , GM Click above for high-res gallery of the 2011 Chevy Volt Though its first official public debut isn't scheduled until early next week, the 2011 Chevy Volt has been introduced to the internet early courtesy of the The Car Connection, which published these apparently official pictures of the revolutionary series hybrid today. In the past few weeks we've seen official teasers shots of the car mixed with spy video taken on the set of Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen , all of which have only served to increase excitement ahead of the car's official debut next week. These pics give up the goods like no others, however, and show various GM execs and engineers directly responsible for its development posing alongside like proud papas. The list includes, in order, Tony Posawatz, Bob Lutz, Bob Boniface, Frank Weber, and Andrew Farah. What we see is a vehicle about the size of the current Chevy Cobalt or next-gen Cruze with...
  • GM releases official pics of 2011 Chevy Cruze

Filed under: Economy , Sedans/Saloons , Euro , Chevrolet , GM Click above for high-res gallery of the 2011 Chevy Cruze They're here! The first official pics of the 2011 Chevy Cruze have been released by General Motors, and we're not ashamed to say it - we like it. Of course, we're comparing it to the current small car in GM's lineup, the Cobalt, so the bar is pretty low. That said, GM's new small car takes the split-grille motif made famous by the Malibu and makes it more interesting with sharp creases rather than rounded corners. The front end features headlights that extend up and "point" to the A-pillars, and a strong character line running the length of the vehicle sits below a concave bend that sweeps up to meet the windows. GM claims that fit and finish of the Cruze will be world class for a small car, and that its interior will use "grained surfaces, soft-touch materials and low gloss trim panels" to improve its perceived quality. Unfortunately...
  • GM releases new production Chevy Volt teasers

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Green , Chevrolet , GM Click above for high-res gallery of the production Chevy Volt var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/BREAKING_GM_releases_new_shots_of_the_production_Volt'; We're not sure why General Motors has released two new teaser shots of the production Volt as well as ten images of engineers and designers working hard on its development, but we'll gladly take and show them to you while we find out. Though GM certainly isn't going to let the whole cat out of the bag this early, we are given a much better view of what we were shown in that ABC News video . We can now see just how high-tech the lighting appears to be on the Volt, with the blue glow of its headlamps upstaged by what appear to be some sort of LED foglamps. We can't tell you what their function is, except to say they look cool and give the impression that the Volt is a car from the future on sale now, or rather sometime in 2010, which is technically the future...
  • Officially Official: Pontiac G8 ST it is

Filed under: Trucks/Pickups , GM , Pontiac Click above for hi-res gallery of the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST We often go poking around General Motors' media resources, so imagine our surprise when we were searching for something totally unrelated and found fresh images of Pontiac's iteration of the Holden Ute. Still warm like just-baked cookies, the images show off a great looking dark-hued modern-day El camino. And for what do we deserve a new batch of G8 ute pics? They accompany word from on high that the official name for this trucklet has been decided. Meet the Pontiac G8 ST. You may remember that GM solicited submissions , or rather suggestions, for what the G8 ST should be named. But after months of waiting and however many submissions, the best they could do was G8 ST? That's the name they started with! Now we feel all cheap and used, like GM knew what they were going to call this thing all along. Whatever, it will be holding court as the king of awesome in your local Pontiac...
  • Spy Shots: Chevy Cruze shows off its interior

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedans/Saloons , Chevrolet , GM Click above to enlarge We've got a bit of a wait ahead of us in the United States, but if this interior photo does indeed show the Chevy Cruze's passenger compartment, then maybe it'll be worth it. TheCaranatic.com doesn't tell the source of the image, the Daewoo logo on the wheel indicates that it was probably snapped in South Korea, where the car will be produced for the European and Asian markets. As for the interior itself? Well, based on the photo it looks top-notch, blending a lot of Opel Insignia with dashes of Chevy Malibu to create a very pleasant driver's environment. This is promising. • 2010 Chevy Camaro - LIVE from the reveal

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Chevrolet , GM Click above for high-res gallery of 2010 Chevy Camaro live! GM design chief Ed Welburn and Chevy General Manager Ed Peper just gave the media our first up close and in person look at the new 2010 Chevy Camaro coupe. The reveal was done in the mechanical prep shop that GM design uses for the final prep on all its concept cars. Peper announced that Job 1 for the new Camaro will be coming on Feb. 16 of next year, and although no official pricing is available yet it will be priced aggressively says GM brass. That aggression goes right along with the new looks and powertrain choices for this new coupe, as well. Chevrolet will offer the Camaro in 3 trim levels, the V6-powered LS and LT and the V8-powered SS. The V6 is a direct injected 300-hp 3.6L unit while the 422-hp V8 displaces 6.2L. Both engines will be available with either manual or automatic transmissions, all with 6 speeds. An RS package will be available as an add-on to to the LT and...

  • Transformers Corvette concept shows some tush

Filed under: Concept Cars , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Chevrolet , GM Click above for more shots of the "Mystery Vette" Someone slipped Jalopnik a new pair of shots of the mysterious Corvette concept that's appearing in next year's Transformers sequel. So far, we've seen good views of the car from the front and side , but rear-end shots had yet to surface. Well, that's over. The concept -- now a confirmed product of the GM Design studios (note the plate in back), has large ducts in back that mimic the openings in front and presumably also hide the car's taillamps. Four big centrally-mounted exhaust outlets poke through the bodywork as well. Frankly, the rear view is the car's least appealing, with that chunky boattail mixed in with all those sharp angles. There's also a new detail shot of the front quarter , which focuses on that very traditional Corvette fender shape. Is it just a movie character or also a concept that GM's going to drop on us somewhere...
  • Leaked slides preview GM's future

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Wagons/Estates , Crossovers/CUVs , Buick , Cadillac , Chevrolet , GM , Saab Click any image for a slightly larger shot. Earlier in the week, a handful of tiny images from General Motor's presentation to employees leaked onto the Web, providing a glimpse into the future of Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and Saab. As the General's spin-meisters try to console both Wall Street investors and tepid consumers after Black Tuesday's depressing announcements , they've finally released these all-too-small pics into the wild. Aside from GM's plans to reduce white-collar expenditures by 20-percent, eliminate salaried employee's health care after age 65 and a cut its way to liquidity to the tune of $15 billion by the end of 2009, Bob Lutz dropped the bomb that the current iteration of the Beat isn't coming to the U.S. and that the 40+ mpg Chevrolet Cruze won't be immediately available to North American consumers after it debuts at the Paris Motor...
  • Best shot yet of the <i>Transformers 2</i> mystery Vette

Filed under: Concept Cars , Spy Photos , Coupes , Chevrolet , GM , Celebrities Click image for photo gallery This much we know. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will have some sort of Corvette concept portraying one of the Autobots (well, we assume it's an Autobot). We also now know that there are at least two movie cars, as you can see in the shot above. Do we officially know that these are Corvettes of some sort? No, but the fender shapes, split rear window, and the port aft of the front wheel are familial styling cues that seal the deal. We're dying to know if this is just a movie creation or a concept that's in the pipeline to be revealed publicly at some future time. And if this forecasts what we should expect in terms of a C7, well, we're okay with that, too. Also snagged in this photo set: the Chevy Beat and Trax, a military-style dune buggy, a pair of Can-Am Spyders, Optimus Prime, and Ratchet. Thanks, Andrew! • Lutz: No Beat for the U.S., smaller CUVs on the way, Insignia stalled

Filed under: Concept Cars , Economy , Sedans/Saloons , Plants/Manufacturing , Crossovers/CUVs , Chevrolet , GM , GMC , HUMMER , Pontiac , Saturn , Opel , Vauxhall General Motor's car czar, Bob Lutz, sat down with the little people of the blogosphere after GM's announcement that it would be reducing white collar expenditures by 20-percent, cutting truck production and eliminating retired health care for salaried workers over 65, all in an effort to boost its liquidity by $15 billion by the end of 2009. Maximum Bob addressed questions about GM's entire brand portfolio, saying, "Pontiac will be nourished with products" and confirming that GM is in talks with financial institutions about HUMMER, and that, "If we could sell the brand, we'd be interested in doing that." Predictably, much of the conversation centered on fuel efficiency and the General's plans to address the growing demand for miserly transport in the U.S. Lutz made it clear that "as...
