  • Detroit 2008: The King is back atop the hill - 2009 Corvette ZR1

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Supercars , Chevrolet Click the ZR1 for a high-res photo gallery of the new King of the Hill var digg_url = 'http://www.digg.com/autos/2009_Corvette_ZR1_first_official_photos_and_details'; The King of the Hill has returned! The new Corvette that has been variously known as the "Blue Devil" and SS for at least the past five years has now been officially designated as the ZR1. The new monster from Bowling Green has revived the ZR1 designation for the first time since the C4-based original faded away in 1995. Stories and spy photos of this mythical machine have been circulating the web and print media since well before the current C6 generation Corvette debuted in 2005. The program has reportedly been killed and revived several times, but it is now very much alive and we have all the details of the fastest, most expensive production 'Vette of all time. Given the recent developments with fuel economy regulations (35 mpg fleet average by...
  • 2008 Chevy Impala 50th Anniversary Edition coming to Detroit

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Sedans/Saloons , Chevrolet , GM Click the image above for over 30 high-res pics. var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/50th_Anniversary_Chevy_Impala_is_automotive_Xanax'; The Chevy Impala is celebrating its 50th Anniversary, and to commemorate the occasion the Bowtie division is offering up a badge-and-trim special edition. What you have here is the garden-variety Impala LT, upgraded for anniversary-edition duty with an FE3 sport suspension, 18-inch alloys, commemorative "50th" Impala badges and a rear spoiler. Inside, the seats are leather and two-toned, with eight-way adjustability for the driver and anniversary embroidery on the headrests. Other edition-specific features include a multifunction steering wheel wrapped in contrast-stitched leather, slightly fancier floormats, and doorsill plates sporting the anniversary logo. It comes in red or black and is, without question, the single most unexciting car GM will be introducing at next...
  • Spy shots: Production Camaro sans Zebra stripes

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Spy Photos , Coupes , Chevrolet , GM Since the original Camaro concept hit NAIAS in January 2006, it seems like we've been living with (and writing about) the pony coupe forever. The fact is, we still haven't seen the Camaro's final production duds. Until now, kind of. The Camaro5 website has posted on its forums a near-naked Chevy Pony car in production sheet metal. The front and rear are wearing padded underwear, but we can see from the side-view pic that the basic shape stays true to the stunning concepts of 2006 and 2007 . Missing are the three slotted vents ahead of the rear wheel wells, but it looks like some ribbed metal takes its place. Also history are the funky-cool but slightly impractical side mirrors from the concept cars, and unlike the concept, the production model has a B-pillar. While it's difficult to tell for certain with the flat white paint job and slightly blurry photography, it appears as though some of the hard edges...
  • BREAKING: First glimpse of the production Chevy Volt!

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Chevrolet , GM Click to enlarge the teaser shot of the production Chevy Volt var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/Production_Chevy_Volt_teaser_image'; The Chevy Volt concept was undoubtedly the star of the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, with most people who saw it clamoring for it to be built. However, it didn't take long for Bob Lutz and other GM officials to make it clear that a production version would have to change. At the LA Auto Show last month, Lutz reiterated that the production version would be different but still recognizable as a Volt. Now in the runup to the Volt's first birthday, GM is giving the world its first glimpse of the production Volt. From this first shot, it looks like the Volt will be keeping it's low roofline proportions, but the main portion of the now-standard Chevy grille is now blanked off and flush to optimize the aerodynamics. Cooling air will now enter through the intake below the...
  • LEAKED! Corvette ZR1 6.2L LS9 V8 sees light of day

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Chevrolet We didn't think we would get a glimpse of it until January at the Detroit Auto Show, but Jalopnik has obtained official photographs of the LS9 V8 that will power the 2009 ZR1 Corvette . The images show that the LS9 is a supercharged version of the 6.2L LS3 V8 like we previously reported . One photo also illustrates in detail a unique integrated twin intercooler that sits atop the supercharger. While it may not have the official name, the blue accents on the engine cover hint at the "Blue Devil" moniker by which we referred the car for some time before switching to the official ZR1 name. While specifications haven't been released yet (we're guessing it will offer somewhere in the neighborhood of 650 HP ), just seeing the images of the LS9 gets us even more excited for the ZR1's official debut in January.
