Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Porsche , First Drive Click above for high-res gallery of the 2009 Porsche Boxster S with PDK The Italian countryside passes by in a blur. At an indicated 265 km/h (164 mph), we have hit the invisible wall. The accelerator pedal has been jammed into the carpet for the last ten seconds, yet the sleek Porsche cannot push the molecules of air away any faster. Thanks to a stiff headwind, simple aerodynamic drag has overcome the 310 horsepower engine and arrested our acceleration a bit shy of Porsche's quoted maximum speed. Regardless of the blustery gusts, the direct-injected flat-six buried in the middle of the chassis continues to wail as it sustains the fight. An approaching curve on the horizon convinces us to reluctantly lift off the gas. We're in Sicily testing the new second-generation 2009 Porsche Boxster S. Significantly updated for the new model year, the drop-top coupe continues to impress us. How has Porsche improved its 12-year-old...

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Motorsports , Sedans/Saloons , Etc. , Jaguar Click above for high-res image gallery of the Jaguar XFR Bonneville car In its spare time while reinventing the company and settling in with a new owner, Jaguar's boffins somehow found time to take their new XFR to the Bonneville Salt Flats for a top speed run last November. The Paul Gentilozzi-driven XFR had been modified with the appropriate safety gear (roll cage, fire suppression system, etc.), along with a sizable low-mounted rear spoiler and a derestricted ECU that allowed the supercharger to yield around 600 horsepower thanks to a bit more boost. So-equipped, the 503-horsepower sedan blew through the double-ton to top out at 225.675 miles-per-hour, solidly trouncing the previous Jaguar land speed record of 217.1 mph set by an XJ220 at Nardo back in 1992 with Martin Brundle at the wheel. For reference, the standard XFR is electronically limited to 155 mph. Incredibly, the Bonneville run was completed...

Filed under: Videos , Australia , Motorcycles Click above to see "Canberra Joyride" parts one and two Remember the guy who took his Lamborghini up to 219 mph on an Arizona highway? A Canberra, Australia man has done the same thing with his Kawasaki ZX-750, filming himself blasting up to 200 km/h (124 mph), sometimes in 60 km/h (37 mph) zone, and called it "Canberra Joyride," part of which is set to, of all things, P.O.D. Then he uploaded the video to YouTube and probably waited for the viewers to gush all over themselves. It turns out that some of the viewers were the Canberra police. And they didn't gush; they performed their own top-speed hunt-and-capture mission and charged the man with doing 200 in a 60. We've all broken a law or two, but guys, a word of advice: filming high-speed runs is like filming your conjugal activities... not to be done . If you must, keep it on lockdown like D-Block at Folsom. Otherwise... well, you should know by now what happens...
