  • <i>The Dark Knight</i>'s shoulder-driven Batpod

Filed under: Concept Cars , Gadgets , Etc. , Tech , Motorcycles Over the last 70 years, Batman has driven all sorts of vehicles , with a wide array of Batmobiles, planes, bikes and boats appearing in the various comic books, television series and movies. Arguably none have been as wickedly exciting, however, as the Tumbler which the superhero drove in the most recent Batman Begins . But with the sequel swooping into theaters this week, we're in store for a new piece of kit. Called the Batpod, we've been bringing you details of the new motorcycle as they've become available . The Batpod is driven by a pair of motors hidden within the giant 20-inch wheels and steered by the shoulder, allowing the Caped Crusader to operate an arsenal of machine guns and grappling hooks. We'll have to hold on just a little bit longer to see it in action on the big screen, but in the meantime you can check out the images from the Batmobile's and Batpod's demonstration at Silverstone with...
  • Nissan 360: the X-by-Wire EA2 concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Minivans/MPVs , SUVs , Tech , Crossovers/CUVs , Nissan Click above for hi-res gallery of the X-by-Wire EA2 Concept Nissan showed off a drive-by-wire concept that wasn't about touting the technology itself, but the space and features you could get back because of it. By fitting a steer-by-wire, brake-by-wire, and shift-by-wire systems, 11 centimeters of extra space was added to the cabin which allowed for a third row of seats in the rear of this Murano-based concept. The room came from pushing the wheels out to the far corners, which could be safely done without sacrificing vehicle dynamics due to the lack of mechanical linkages. The small, race-style steering wheel needs less turning input, and the column can be tilted up completely out of the way. The center tunnel has become a beautifully finished control panel that gently arcs up to greet the driver. When you don't need it, it can also be folded back over itself creating even more space in the front...
  • BMW 7-Series hybrid on the horizon

Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Tech , BMW With Cameron Diaz now officially set to ride in the BMW Hydrogen 7 to the 2008 Oscar Awards, more unofficial details are coming out that BMW is planning to launch a Hybrid 7 Series in the next 2-3 years. We have blogged about hybrid BMW models before. In fact, just last April, we spoke about a Hybrid 5 Series model possibly in the works. Now, rumor has it that the flagship 7 Series will get the eco-friendly powerplant first. Likely a joint venture between BMW, General Motors, and Mercedes-Benz, the new powerplant will be a "mild" hybrid system. This type of hybrid recovers energy from braking (aka "regenerative braking") to be stored and used to supplement the internal combustion engine. The Hybrid 7 Series will have to ultimately rely on gasoline for propulsion, as this type of hybrid is not able to run in pure electric mode like the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid . With the news of BMW's twin-turbo diesel...
  • Geneva '08 Preview: Pininfarina Sintesi does away with traffic signs

Filed under: Concept Cars , Gadgets , Geneva Motor Show , Safety , Tech , Driving We always knew it would be the Italians who would figure out a way to do away with traffic lights and stop signs. The latest in the slow reveal of Pininfarina's upcoming Sintesi concept highlights what the design firm calls Clancast. The system - which, as it strikes us, would need to be fitted to every vehicle on the road in order to work at all - communicates automatically with other cars on the road to coordinate traffic in a decentralized manner, thereby obviating the need for stop signs, traffic lights and all manner of roadside signalization that we all studied so hard to learn for our driving exams. We presume Pininfarina will have more details when the concept is fully unveiled at the Geneva show, now just three weeks away. But until then, you can check out the Sintesi virtual magazine online to see what Pininfarina is on about. [Source: Pininfarina] Gallery: Pininfarina Sintesi concept Read |...
