Filed under: Time Warp , Sports/GTs , Porsche , Lifestyle , Sunday Drive Click above for high-res gallery from our drive to Chino We were recently invited along by the Porsche 356 Registry and 356 Club of Southern California for a Sunday drive out to the Chino Airport and couldn't think of any good reason to say no. Like any car club, the glue that holds these groups together are the cars they own, drive and admire. In this case it is Porsche's classic 356 and its successor, the Porsche 912. While some see these models are little more than gussied up Beetles, those in the know appreciate them for what they really are, the cars that made Porsche a household name. Follow the jump to read more about our special day with these iconic cars and the equally legendary planes at the Planes of Fame Air Museum in Chino. And don't forget to check out the high-res gallery for your next desktop wallpaper. Gallery: Chino Porsches 'N' Planes Photos Copyright (C)2008 Frank Filipponio...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Spy Photos , Trends , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Ford , Lifestyle , Humor , Special/Limited Editions While cruising along in Southern California one morning this week, we spied what could pass for a new hero car in the next installment of the "Mad Max" movie franchise. Just check out those rows of steel studs along the hood, roof and trunk. Perhaps bouyed by the historic executive branch runs of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin, the newest chapter of this apocalyptic anecdote could see the Mad Max reins being handed over to a woman. Spotted proudly piloting this studded silver V6 'Stang, we've dubbed her "Mad Maxine." Just like the car, the driver transformation hadn't been completed yet, but she definitely looked the part with her steely gaze and guard dog companion. Whatever it is, we got a kick out of this personalized pony. One word of advice though -- if you see this in your rearview mirror, kindly move aside. Come to think of it...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Supercars , Aston Martin , Lifestyle The era of the luxury exotic with a so-so sound system is nearly over. Bang & Olufsen worked with product developers at Aston Martin to create the BeoSound DBS audio system that is specifically tuned to 007's cabin. Thirteen speakers -- five tweeters, five midrange, and three woofers -- are located in ten places around the cabin. Of course a sound system for the DBS is not just about sound -- it is just as much about looks. Two of the tweeters are mounted on the dash and ascend when the car is started. Loudspeaker grilles are finished in contoured aluminum. And all that hardware is controlled by B&O's Digital Signal Processing system that is matched the DBS interior and adjusts to changing acoustic conditions. All of this means you'll be able to hear the next Bond theme song, "Another Way to Die," like never before... [Source: Aston Martin ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Over the course of eight months, the academy culled a group of wannabe racers from a field of entrants who posted the best lap times in GT5 Prologue. Then, for five days at Silverstone , the finalists competed in the game and on the actual track, watched by ex-F1 racer Johnny Herbert and a panel of five judges. The two winners were just announced, and Top Gun status went to Lars Schlomer and Luis Ordonez. Schlomer is a taxi driver in Bonn, Germany; Ordonez is an MBA student from Spain. Now that they've won, they'll be thrown into boot camp for four months to learn to how to race for real silver: in four months, they'll have to earn their racing licenses and get ready to drive a factory-backed Nissan 350Z in...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Japan , Marketing/Advertising , Supercars , Audi , Lifestyle The Peninsula Hotel in Hong Kong bought 13 Rolls-Royce Phantoms for shuttling guests around the city. The Peninsula Hotel in Tokyo has purchased just one car, and will leave the guest to drive himself. That car is an R8, finished in the hotel's trademark Brewster Green, with a gold Peninsula logo outside, and cognac leather inside. To avail yourself of it -- once you've gotten to Tokyo -- you'll need to book the Peninsula Suite, which goes for the ho-hum figure of ¥850,000 per night. That $8,000 U.S. every day to burble at single-digit speeds in Tokyo traffic, although you are allowed to take it outside of Tokyo. Come to think of it, the speeds probably don't matter -- if you have that kind of money, there's a good chance you've got an R8 or better in your own garage already... Filed under: Convertibles , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Lifestyle Of course your wallet hurts every time you have to fill the car up. Nevertheless, in these trying times we must always remember the words of Fernando Lamas : it is better to look good than to feel good. Cars That Matter has put together a list of classic automobiles that get anywhere from 21 to 48 mpg, which means you can look good while you save money. The heaviest drinker is the Datsun 240Z, just cracking into the twenties. But plenty of cars hover around the 30 mpg mark, like the Lotus Europa, Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, and Fiat X1/9. If you want to crack the big four-oh, you've still got choices: BMW Isetta and Honda S800. And the Crosley Hotshot will get you a miserly 48 mpg. All right, so there are some niggling issues of practicality -- almost all the cars have only two chairs -- unsuitability for winter, plus many of them are mechanical horrors. As such, we must always remember the words of dear old dad: there...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Videos , Ferrari , Lifestyle , Special/Limited Editions Click above for more photos courtesy of SpeedAndMotion.com If you've ever had the pleasure of hearing a Ferrari Challenge Stradale run, you'll know that there are few sounds like it in all of autodom. When revved towards its 8,500 RPM redline, it takes on a raspy snarl that makes the regular Ferrari 360 V8 sound positively tame in comparison. Now just imagine taking that sound and multiplying it by 21. You see, 21 Challenge Stradale owners recently got together in Southern California to celebrate this special edition F-car, and in the process may have set some kind of record. Arizona had claimed a record a while back when they had just nine of these beasts in one place at one time. Whether or not that was official, the 21 cars that turned up in the L.A. area last weekend clearly have it beat. It's the most we've ever seen at once so until you can show us otherwise, we'll award them the...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Marketing/Advertising , Supercars , Aston Martin , Lifestyle , Celebrities We have to admit, when we heard the next Bond film was going to be called "Quantum of Solace," we kind of scrunched our faces a little bit. Still, Casino Royale was so good that we figured we'd give it the old innocent-until-proven-guilty treatment. Well, now we've seen the trailer, and it looks so bloody good we're all verklempt . We clapped at the end. And then we watched it again. There's so much action in the trailer that we don't know how there's going to be room for story unless it's as long as Ben Hur , but right now we don't much care. There's only a brief glimpse of the DBS in the trailer at the very end, but whatever it's doing it looks suitably Bond-ish. We'll even admit that the 2-minute clip is good enough to forgive wrecking this Aston DBS , this Alfa , and another Aston DBS during filming. Now you'll...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Aston Martin , Lifestyle Click above for pair of high-res images showing the Kilgour Vantage V8 Supercars and high fashion go together like super models and getting high, so for its first ever fashion show in Paris, bespoke tailor Kilgour of Savile Row has presented its spring/summer collection alongside a bespoke Aston Martin V8 Vantage coupe. The haute couture Aston is dipped in a one-off Morning Forst Satin paint described as having the texture of fine silk, which would be quite a feat if true since metal usually feels nothing like fabric. The interior is also done up in Kilgour Midnight Blue with polka-dotted seat inserts. Apparently circles are Kilgour's trademark shape, hence the gaudy pattern on the seats. We don't understand high fashion very much, like why people care about apparel that's completely impractical and overpriced, but we suppose some could say the same thing about the cars we like. For instance, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Marketing/Advertising , Videos , Supercars , Lamborghini , Lifestyle When Jaguar's "Gorgeous" campaign TV ads came out a few years back with the XK, some ad critics questioned the none-too-subtle message they contained: older, distinguished gentleman gets to frolic with beautiful young women when he drives this car. Whether or not that's the case -- concerning the ad or in real life -- a new Lamborghini commercial with Sam Hubinette takes that same riff and, being Lamborghini, pushes it even further. Hubinette and some wet, downtown LA roads show what the car can do, and the spot also shows what the car has. Boasting "features like no other," the first one of which is a Phone Number Collecting Set that appears to specialize in tall brunettes, the car also has an Anti-Boredom Assistant (that engine, a Talk of the Town Guarantee, and a Gets Into All Clubs function0. And that's all before you order it in Giallo Halys (that's...

The 1970's cult classic featured the black and white playing chase with a 1973 Ford Mustang Mach 1. These days, though, the officers use more efficient methods to capture muscle cars; they invite them over for a fundraising car show. Over the weekend, the Long Beach Police Academy held a classic car show to benefit the department's K9 Officers Association. A few dozen impeccable examples of automobile preservation took over the grounds of the Long Beach Police Officers Association Park. Not to be rude hosts, the organization even showed off an old Dodge Cornet and Model T police cruiser amongst the numerous Bel Airs, Mustangs and Vegas. Browsing through the rows of vintage automobiles wasn't the only event incentive for...

One to One is for those who just can't settle for an "off the rack" Ferrari, as if there is such a thing, yet the program allows purchasers of the new 2008 612 Scaglietti to have their new toys tailored to their whims. Beginning with the Park Avenue store in New York this week customers can work with a specialist to select the materials and accessories they want in their 612 to create a truly bespoke Italian exotic. Once the desired combinations have been chosen, the cars will be assembled in a dedicated corner of the Maranello factory. Along with the usual shrieking V-12, the latest edition of the 612 includes Ferrari's new electrochromic roof and SuperFast electro-hydraulic shifted...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Dodge , Lifestyle Click above to enlarge The Neiman Marcus catalog is always full of superfluous luxury goods like hover crafts or special edition Lexus models . The 2008 Spring Men's catalog is no exception. Its special seasonal offering happens to be a half dozen and one venomous snakes. Even though they are endangered, they are not the kind featured on National Geographic. They are, in fact, seven special 2008 Hennessey Venom 700 NM Vipers. The tuned beasts boast 700 horsepower and 645 pound feet of torque, though despite the increased power output, their 0-60 times are even with the 678-hp 650R Hennessey Venom upgrade for the 2008 Dodge Viper. The discrepancy in performance most likely stems from a traction issue. The lack of grip shouldn't be a problem for any buyer to handle, though, since a day of performance driving school at Lonestar Motorsports Park is included in the purchase price of $179,500. The shopping cart handle rear wing that's tested...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Supercars , Audi , Lifestyle Click the image above for a high-res gallery of Audi R8 pics It's not something many people have talked about, but perhaps the biggest problem with the Audi R8 is that the car doesn't offer enough storage to haul its own growing bundle of awards. Among a passel of other international pubs, Automobile , Playboy , and Autobild have all named the R8 the ant's pants and the bee's knees, or something like that. Latest to sign the R8 Fan Register is the Robb Report , which has placed the R8 on the top step of its Car of the Year awards. It was apparently "the closest voting in the award's recent history," which is not hard to understand based on the depth of the field. The stupendous machinery trumped by the R8 includes the Ferrari 599, 911 Turbo Cabriolet, Bentley Continental GT Speed, and Aston Martin Vantage V8. The award is decided by automotive professionals as well as Robb Report readers...

The baggage we're talking about is the kind you pack your clothes and shaving kit in. The slinky new coupe is actually the beneficiary of a little tie-in with Salvatore Ferragamo, which has produced a new five-piece set of fitted luggage inspired by the GranTurismo. To celebrate the car's UK arrival, the set is being displayed in the window of the Salvatore Ferragamo store on London's Bond Street through Christmas Eve. It's the perfect gift for that special someone who pretty much has everything else there is to have already. You can see it in the gallery below, which also contains four nice new hi-res shots of the car. We know that's what you really want to look at anyway.
