Filed under: Car Buying , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Plants/Manufacturing , Supercars , Audi Click above for high-res gallery of the Audi R8 Word has it there is an eight-month waiting list for the Audi R8 in the car's home market of Germany. Here in the good ol' U.S. of A., the 50 units we get per month are not nearly enough for all of the interested buyers. Well, with V10 , convertible and possibly diesel versions in the works, we can't imagine that demand will subside anytime soon. You might think that Audi would be smart to amp up production to handle the high demand, especially with those new versions coming soon, but that isn't gonna happen according to Audi. Seems they can only make 27 R8s a month day and no more. That should keep the R8 variations very scarce and very dear. For those lucky enough to have the coinage and a place in line, there is more news. Car and Driver talked to Michael Dick, Audi's member of the board of management for technical development...

The Peninsula Hotel in Tokyo has purchased just one car, and will leave the guest to drive himself. That car is an R8, finished in the hotel's trademark Brewster Green, with a gold Peninsula logo outside, and cognac leather inside. To avail yourself of it -- once you've gotten to Tokyo -- you'll need to book the Peninsula Suite, which goes for the ho-hum figure of ¥850,000 per night. That $8,000 U.S. every day to burble at single-digit speeds in Tokyo traffic, although you are allowed to take it outside of Tokyo. Come to think of it, the speeds probably don't matter -- if you have that kind of money, there's a good chance you've got an R8 or better in your own garage already... Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Videos , Supercars , Audi Midnight Club: LA is on its way, and the developers at Rockstar Games just released a new video of an Audi R8 doing its thing through the concrete jungle. The name of the game: arcade. Or better names might be 'free-for-all' and 'pedestrians, watch out!' It's cut like an MTV video, so it's hard to get a feel for the flow of the action, but all you need to know is that there'll be plenty of it -- action, that is. And if nothing else, it does seem to accurately depict how actual R8 drivers tend to pilot their cars... Follow the jump for the video. Codenamed Blackbird, the coupe is stuffed with enough gadgets to be a testbed for NASA's shuttle replacement, but don't for a second think the interior resembles a jungle of wires, screens and antennae: all the electronic gear is seamlessly integrated in a most impressive way. A sample of the wares in the blacked out supercar with the gunmetal gray blade include four GPS units, two radar detectors, police scanner, CB radio, kill switch for all rear lights, high-speed broadband Internet with Wi-Fi running on a tablet PC, power ports, takedown lights, a remote-controlled exhaust bypass valve, and -- get this -- a liquid-cooled infrasonic wave pulse generator. Apparently, you don't want to stand...

Filed under: Spy Photos , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Supercars , Audi After more than a year of speculation , and even a leaked sketch , we finally have our first spy shots confirming that Audi is developing an open-air version of its R8 supercar. And just to sweeten the deal, the test mule spied is all but completely undisguised. While nomenclature has yet to be confirmed - possibly using the Targa, Convertible, Cabrio, Roadster or Spider tags - the shots confirm that the convertible supercar will employ a fabric roof . Power is expected to carry over from the 420-hp FSI V8 coupe, but the presence of wider tailpipes on this test mule indicate that the highly-anticipated V10 is likely to appear in the roadster, as well. The car is expected to make its debut next March at the Geneva Motor Show show in Switzerland. [Source: NextAutos ] Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Motorsports , Sports/GTs , Euro , Supercars , Audi Click for hi-res gallery of the Audi R8 DTM safety car Audi has announced that its superlative R8 sportscar will serve as the safety car for the ever-popular DTM touring car championship, having also served in the same capacity for the recently-concluded 24 Hours of Le Mans. Audi's performance division quattro GmbH prepared a pair of R8s for the German racing series - with the second serving as a "racing taxi" - but noted that, "because the R8 possesses the genes of a perfect sports car", little in the way of modification for duty was required. The pair of R8 support vehicles made its debut at the Norisring Speed Weekend yesterday, where Mercedes-Benz beat out the new Audi A4 DTM with a 1-2 finish. Filed under: Motorsports , Sports/GTs , Euro , Audi Click above for photo gallery This year's Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race will feature perhaps the most wicked Audi R8 yet: a lightweight, custom-built racer that makes the road car look tame by comparison. To comply with the requirements for participation in the race, the stock 4.2L V8 donates its block and is rebuilt from there. The race-spec motor's displacement drops to 4.0 liters but it delivers a hefty 530 horsepower and 353 lb-ft of torque. The R8's stock front and rear bodywork is replaced by new, widebody carbon kevlar panels. The outboard intakes in the nose are replaced by blanks, and out back, the custom exhaust's dual outlets poke through the spot where the license plate would reside on the production car. Other obvious additions are the front splitter, large rear wing, rear diffuser, and multiple cutouts in the aft bodywork to help with engine cooling. The entire package weighs in at just 2,755 pounds...

Finished in Brilliant Red paint and dubbed the R8 TDI Le Mans -- the association with the fabled endurance race carries a lot more weight on the Continent -- the car arrives in Geneva with the same impressive spec sheet as its silver counterpart. A 6.0L V12 TDI is crammed in the space behind the R8's passenger compartment. It packs a bit of a punch, too -- 500 horsepower and enough torque (737 lb-ft) to alter the earth's rotation allow for a 0-62 mph time of just 4.2 seconds and a 186 mph top end. That's Euro 6-compliant power, too. Clean and mean -- emphasis on the mean. We'll have live shots of it for you tomorrow. Fans of The Godfather will love it, and anyone even remotely aware of The Godfather 's memorable scenes will get it. Whether it helps persuade luxury car buyers that the interlocking rings constitute an offer they can't refuse will be determined on future sales charts. If nothing else, however, we know that Audi certainly brought its "A" game to Super Bowl Sunday...and that Johnny Fontane will get that movie. Watch the preview here . Quint at Ain't It Cool News scored a screen capture that shows our billionaire industrialist hero, Tony Stark, working in his garage on the armor's glove- and boot-mounted boosters. And what a nice garage it is, boasting not just Tony's R8, but a Shelby Cobra, a Saleen S7, a Tesla Roadster, and a pair of bikes we can't identify (weigh in if you can). Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Sports/GTs , Euro , Audi Click images for hi-res gallery Last night , we showed you updated photos of Audi's A4 and A5 as reworked by Germany's Abt Sportsline. Tonight, we have a similar set of new shots from the same tuner, only this time the subject is the Audi R8, a car that doesn't need a whole lot of work to begin with. Abt leaves the engine alone, instead supplying a sport suspension, a brake upgrade, and new 20" wheels. On the visual side, the car gets carbon fiber skirts and rear spoiler, along with replacement front and rear clips that tone down the oversized factory grillework on both ends. The front openings are now angled and feature colored CF inserts. Matching colored pieces are added to the sideblades and the rear end, too. The new rear bumper cover incorporates a diffuser-style bottom, smaller vents, and diagonal outlets for the exhaust tips. Pretty good stuff, if you ask us, and if the colored elements don't float...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Etc. , Supercars , Audi , Lifestyle Click the image above for a high-res gallery of Audi R8 pics It's not something many people have talked about, but perhaps the biggest problem with the Audi R8 is that the car doesn't offer enough storage to haul its own growing bundle of awards. Among a passel of other international pubs, Automobile , Playboy , and Autobild have all named the R8 the ant's pants and the bee's knees, or something like that. Latest to sign the R8 Fan Register is the Robb Report , which has placed the R8 on the top step of its Car of the Year awards. It was apparently "the closest voting in the award's recent history," which is not hard to understand based on the depth of the field. The stupendous machinery trumped by the R8 includes the Ferrari 599, 911 Turbo Cabriolet, Bentley Continental GT Speed, and Aston Martin Vantage V8. The award is decided by automotive professionals as well as Robb Report readers...

Filed under: Car Buying , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Supercars , Audi click above for more images of this totaled Audi R8 The Audi R8 is an aspirational item for most, meaning that most will only aspire to own one and never get to park the actual item in their garage. We blame the $118,000 USD price tag, which is even more in other markets, for own own personal inability to attain one. What if someone were selling a slightly used R8 for cheap? This one's for sale in Germany at the going rate of 35,999 EUR, or just about $52,430 USD. Yes, it's been scratched... and the front end completely destroyed, along with the driver's side rear fender. But the glorious 4.2L V8 mounted in the middle is in pristine condition, and that's all that matters, right? Honestly, all kidding aside, not even Cooter could bring this car back to life, which means $52 grand would be a chunk of chump change for what is essentially a large German paperweight. To celebrate its diversity of content, the bunny has penned its hottest new rides of 2008. If it wasn't already obvious that Mr. Hefner had a passion for nice curves, his publication's selections for the best transportation on four wheels hints at broader appeal than the female persuasion. Playboy chose the Audi R8 as its car of the year, citing a 0-60 time of 4.4 seconds as its main attraction. The even better looking Maserati GranTurismo took the best sports couple category, and the hot new Cadillac CTS took sports sedan honors. Playboy's entire list of winners, accompanied by it's official press release, is available after the jump. Check it...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Euro , Supercars , Audi Click image for hi-res gallery The panel of experts at Germany's Autobild Sportscars has chosen its annual car of the year, and unsurprisingly, the SportsCar 2007 award goes to the Audi R8. When you consider that everyone from Jeremy Clarkson on down has been reduced to a puddle of drool by Ingolstadt's take on what a supercar should be, it comes as zero surprise that a group of German motoring writer/experts would deem it fit for coronation. The total competition featured twelve cars including the Porsche 911 GT3 and the BMW M3. We'd tell you the other candidates, but we don't read German and our search attempts on the Autobild website have yet to unearth the complete nominee list. The two competitors we mention are hot machines, nonetheless, but neither they nor any others were hot enough to knock this year's unquestionable "it" car from its perch. Chalk up one more reason to get your name on the waiting list...
