Filed under: Sports/GTs , Supercars , Alfa Romeo James Glickenhaus is best known in these parts as the rich guy who paid Pininfarina a lot of money to create a custom body for his Ferrari Enzo, thus creating the renowned and oft-driven Ferrari P4/5 . Apparently Glickenhaus is not strictly a Ferrari fan, as he has now become the first of 100 Americans to receive the keys to a U.S.-spec Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione coupe. Glickenhaus even reportedly paid enough extra for his 8C Competizione to get the Alfa Romeo factory to finish his car in the same shade of red used on his one-of-a-kind P4/5. Shortly after Glickenhaus took the keys and went for a first drive, the same dealership handed over two more 8Cs to slightly lesser mortals. And everything was looking so good for a return of the Alfa Romeo brand to the United States. Too bad, it seems, 'cause the latest reports indicate that the Italian purveyor of stylish automobiles such as the Brera , 159 and the drool-worthy 149 will be pushed back to 2011 at the earliest. Fortunately for the very well heeled, the Alfa 8C Competizione has been made available through an assorted group of Maserati dealerships, though it's already sold out . Such a quick sellout indicates that there are plenty of enthusiasts anxiously awaiting the marque's entrance Stateside, but our current horrible economic climate will likely dictate otherwise. Alfa's owner, Fiat, is having difficulties of its own as it attempts to stem the tide of falling sales figures along with rest of the industry. Apparently, the only way for Fiat...

Filed under: Car Buying , Sports/GTs , Euro , Supercars , Alfa Romeo , Special/Limited Editions Click above for a high-res gallery of the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione And with these words, the Alfisti shall rejoice: Alfa Romeo is finally back in the United States. While a full scale return by the Italian maker won't happen until 2009 or 2010, you can officially buy the Alfa 8C Competizione starting this month through one of the designated Maserati dealers tabbed to carry this rolling piece of automotive hotness. Check that, you can arrange delivery. Seems all of the 8Cs earmarked for the U.S. are already spoken for. So at least in theory, Alfa has returned. The 8C Spider open air version won't show up until 2010, but we really like the coupe enough not to be too distressed about the wait. When the full operation ramps up, we are expecting that someone strolling into an Alfa Romeo dealership will be able to purchase not only the 8C Competizione and 8C Spider, but hopefully the hotter...

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Euro , Alfa Romeo , Rendered Speculation We already know that Alfa Romeo intends to use the lauded design of the 8C Competizione as the new template for its range-wide styling language. The MiTo was the first to receive the treatment, with project 149 coming next and renderings of the 159 replacement showing the same. The next to follow in the 8C's footsteps could be the GT, but the rendering you see above doesn't come from the factory. It was done by an enthusiast forecasting what a revised GT could look like. We don't know yet if the GT will continue for another generation or if it will be replaced by something else entirely, but if the compact 2+2 (positioned above the new MiTo and below the current Brera) does see another incarnation, it could look something like this. Filed under: Concept Cars , Sports/GTs , Supercars , Alfa Romeo , Special/Limited Editions Only months ago Bertone, one of the most famous design houses in Europe, looked like it was about to go under . The company had lost all its contracts, had a big operation to sustain, and went into bankruptcy protection . But like a phoenix from the ashes, Bertone is re-emerging, more streamlined and ready to get back to business. The manufacturing division, heavy with overhead, was stripped away from the styling studio, which is still owned by the Bertone family but operated independently . And its new business development director is keen to get the design house back on track. Among the steps Bertone is considering is to open up additional field offices away from Italy to get in on the local action. The company is in the process of setting up shop in China, and has its eyes set on India and Detroit next. To mark its resurgence, Bertone is also considering putting the BAT 11 into limited production...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Supercars , Alfa Romeo , Special/Limited Editions Click for hi-res gallery of the Alfa 8C Competizione It'd be hard to ask for more than what the spectacular Alfa 8C Competizione already offers, but Alfa Romeo intends to do just that. So after announcing the initial run of 500 coupes, Alfa will begin production of 500 roadsters. But in case that weren't enough, reports have been circulating of two new 8Cs to follow. On the one hand we have the 8C's successor , which Alfa's PR people hope will be based on the Ferrari California. On the other we have the more focused GTA version of the current coupe. While earlier reports suggested that the new second-generation Ferrari-based 8C could arrive in time for Alfa Romeo's 100 year anniversary in 2010, sources now suggest that it will be the 8C GTA that will arrive for the big celebration. Applying the magic formula of less weight and more power, the GTA is tipped to shed some 150 kg (330 lbs), while...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Supercars , Alfa Romeo Click above for a hi-res gallery of the Alfa 8C Competizione Few cars are as eminently desirable as the Alfa 8C Competizione. So how do you make us want it even more? Well, you can chop off the roof and make it into a roadster, but Alfa Romeo already did that. How about making it even more powerful? That's hard to do - remember that, having developed the engine for its sister-company, Maserati has shoehorned the 450hp V8 into both the GranTurismo and the new Quattroporte to make more powerful S versions of both - but that's exactly what Alfa's new CEO, Luca de Meo , intends to do. The plan involves producing an additional run of 100 supercars with more power and less weight... and you know that's the magic formula. Like the 230hp MiTo announced just yesterday , the faster 8C would wear Alfa's premier GTA badge. Although the project has yet to gain approval from the higher-ups in the Fiat group, de Meo is reportedly fighting...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Alfa Romeo , FIAT Any day in which we bring you news of a new Italian sports car is a good day by any account. Today we bring you news of three new sports cars under development under the Fiat group umbrella, which we needn't point out controls most of the Italian automotive industry, including Fiat, Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Maserati and Ferrari. First up to bat is the unique sports car which, as we reported back in March , Fiat is developing for its recently revived Abarth performance brand. Reports now suggest that the Abarth roadster would take an Elise-style approach, and could even borrow underpinnings from Lotus. Power could come from the turbo four in the Punto and 500 Abarth, mounted amidships, but unburdened by a lightweight two-seater chassis. While we wait for more news on that front, there are parallel reports of a new Lancia coupe-cabrio on the horizon. (This in addition to the rumored Aurelia flagship , anticipated for unveiling...

Filed under: Time Warp , Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Driving , Alfa Romeo Click to view the '61 Alfa Giulietta in our hi-res gallery Everyone has their own idea of heaven on earth: the first snowfall, a cold beer on a hot day, a pristine azure beach... Cruising around town on a beautiful summer day in a classic Italian roadster may just be ours. There's just something, what the French call a certain je ne sais quoi , an indefinable quality about a vintage Alfa - found somewhere in between the exhaust note and the chrome details - that has a unique capacity to make driver and passenger forget about everything else and just enjoy the drive. Don't get us wrong, we're big fans of progress. But after spending a few hours with this beautiful 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider, we're gaining a new appreciation for the phrase "they don't build 'em like they used to". Follow the jump to read why. Gallery: 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Photos Copyright (C)2008...

Filed under: Tuners , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Alfa Romeo , UK , Special/Limited Editions Click above for high-res gallery of the Alfa Brera S We didn't need another reason to want an Alfa Romeo Brera, nor another excuse to ogle its breathtaking lines. But then Prodrive comes along, with all its racing and rallying know-how, and gave us the Brera S . The toughened-up version addresses some of the gorgeous coupe's performance shortfalls and makes us cry "it's not fair", because it isn't. A car so beautiful and now, thanks to David Richards and Company, so dynamically improved, should be ours, but unfortunately a little puddle called the Atlantic Ocean keeps that dream from becoming reality. So we'll just have to wait until Alfa Romeo finally makes the voyage Stateside, by which time the limited-edition Brera S will undoubtedly be all gone, and with good reason. We'll just have to console ourselves with this new batch of achingly gorgeous images, which we're...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Euro , Hatchbacks , Alfa Romeo Click above for new high-res gallery of the Alfa Brera S As we reported earlier , Alfa Romeo handed over its Brera to Prodrive, which has extensively honed the hot hatch into what's being called the Brera S. Prodrive fit the new Brera S with Eibach coil springs and Bilstein dampers, and then conducted extensive testing to find the right balance of spring and damper rates for sharper handling without ruining the ride. The steering was also tweaked to take advantage of the car's faster reflexes, and 8C Competizione-inspired lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels wearing Pirelli rubber keep the car affixed to terra firma. Along with lighter wheels, hollow anti-roll bars and aluminum suspension components further reduce the car's weight below the rest of the Brera range. Exterior mods are minimal, but the exhaust has been reworked and is capped with chrome tips featuring Prodrive's logo, and there are now Prodrive-branded mud...

Filed under: Sports/GTs , Hatchbacks , Supercars , Alfa Romeo Click above to view the Alfa Romeo brothers in hi-res When I was a little kid I wanted to be like my big brother. I would dress the same as him, go to the same places as him, do the same things as him... It never really worked because, at the end of the day, I never looked anything like him. So while I doubt I was the only one, I had one eyebrow raised when Alfa Romeo set out to mimic the design of its show-stoppin', range-toppin' 8C Competizione with a new entry-level model. A mass-market hatchback designed to look like an ultra-exclusive supercar? Well Alfa arguably achieved just that with the new MiTo, and to prove that point it's graced us with a whole gallery of new images of the two siblings side by side. The kid brother may look that much more junior in juxtaposition, but the resemblance is uncanny. See for yourself in the gallery by clicking the thumbnails below. Filed under: Sports/GTs , Auction Action , Euro , Supercars , Alfa Romeo Click above to see more images of the Alfa 8C up for sale Having built only built 500 examples, the achingly luscious Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione is bound to become a collectors' item. Unfortunately, they've all been spoken for, but if you missed your chance and cost is no object, Italian auction site AutoScout24 has one listed that may be of interest. On top of the clout and rarity of the standard 8C, this model stands out as one of only a handful produced in black. That alone isn't enough to justify the huge premium being charged for this example: the asking price is €380,000, over twice its original retail price of €160k. The power boost may come close, however: through unspecified means, the output on this 8C is quoted as having been boosted to 590 hp, a 140-hp bonus over the stock 450. Filed under: Car Buying , Sedans/Saloons , Sports/GTs , Plants/Manufacturing , Jaguar , Land Rover , Alfa Romeo , FIAT , Tata Click above for high-res gallery of the Alfa Mi.To Hot on the heels of the impending sale official sale of Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata and news that Fiat is looking to start producing Alfa Romeo vehicles in the U.S. are reports that Fiat would be interested in partnering up with the new Jaguar ownership to share rear-wheel-drive platforms for their high-end Alfa models. Tata and Fiat already have close ties, as Ratan Tata , chairman of the Tata Group, is a member of Fiat's board and the two companies jointly produce engines and transmissions in India. In addition to possible platform sharing between Jaguar and Alfa, Fiat is also interested in using the existing Jaguar and Land Rover dealer base in the U.S. as a way to ease Alfa's re-entry the American market. Anything that helps get Alfa Romeo back in the U.S. is fine by us, but there are surely issues...

Filed under: Convertibles , Sports/GTs , Videos , Supercars , Alfa Romeo With styling this beautiful, we don't need a reason to post about the Alfa 8C Spider. But it helps when Alfa Romeo puts out another of its elegant videos of the exotic sportscar driving along dramatic winding roads - like the footage of the fixed-roof 8C Competizione we've brought you before . When Alfa took the wraps off the production 8C Spider at the recently-concluded Geneva show, it played this video on the wall above. The scenery is all ocean view and the soundtrack straight out of Ocean's 11 , but as high as the stakes were for Alfa to build the impossibly gorgeous coupe and roadster, we're not sure it was such a gamble. Roll the dice and follow the jump to see for yourself. Gallery: Alfa Romeo 8C Spider Continue reading VIDEO: Alfa 8C Spider Permalink | Email this | Comments
