  • Spy Shots: 2011 CLS

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedans/Saloons , Mercedes-Benz The coming CLS appears to offer more of the same: the current CLS is based on the E-Class platform; the next one is expected to be built atop S-Class underpinnings. Other than bigger body with a wider track, and bolder styling to harmonize with Mercedes' current design language, not much is expected to change. That is usually the case with iconic cars. Having invented the category of the four-door-car with a more coupe-like silhouette, Mercedes could be waiting to see what its rivals -- from Aston Martin to VW -- will bring to the segment before it makes a revolutionary move. • Mercedes-Benz marks 80 years of protection with new S600 Pullman Guard

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Safety , Mercedes-Benz , Special/Limited Editions Click above for high-res gallery of the Mercedes-Benz S600 Pullman Guard Short of riding around in a tank, among the highest levels of protection while motoring are provided by armored Mercedes-Benz. The German automaker has been protecting heads of state and captains of industry for 80 years now, and to mark the anniversary has officially released the new S600 Pullman Guard limousine, which was initially announced way back in February 2007. Based on a stretched version of the standard, off-the-shelf S600, the Pullman is engineered right off the assembly line to withstand handgun fire, grenades and explosive charges to the stringent B6 and B7 ballistic protection standards. The extra weight of all that armor is pulled around by Mercedes' top-of-the-line 517-hp 5.5-liter twin-turbo V12 and is further supported by run-flat tires, a self-sealing fuel tank and integrated fire suppression system. Of course, the...
  • Rendered or official? 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes-Benz Autobild is hardly a bastion of integrity on newsstands in Germany, so its cover story proclaiming it has "Exclusive Photos" of the new Mercedes-Benz E-class "without camouflage" needs to be taken with the appropriate grains of salt. However, based on the various reports we've seen over the past year, these images of the E-class are spot on, if not official pics from M-B. The new front fascia is an interesting amalgamation of the C- and S-class' front ends, with an upright grille framed by two-piece headlamps, a sculpted front bumper and LED indicators. The sides of the new E incorporate a C-class-inspired swage line, while the rear taillights wrap half-way around the fenders. Autobild reports that the new E-class will be unveiled in March, so expect to get all the details from Geneva next year. Sales will likely begin in Europe next summer, with the U.S. model arriving shortly thereafter. [Source...
  • All VW and Mercedes diesels eligible for tax credit

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Sedans/Saloons , SUVs , Green , Mercedes-Benz , Volkswagen We knew last month that the Jetta TDI was qualified for the tax credit . Now, word is out that all of the new-generation clean diesels for Volkswagen (TDI) and Mercedes-Benz (Bluetec) will be joining the elite handful of vehicles that qualify for a federal alternative-powertrain tax credit. Formerly reserved for just hybrid vehicles, the diesels have been designated as advanced lean-burn-technology vehicles that meet the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit standards of the IRS. The credits vary based on the vehicle. In the case of Mercedes, the ML320 qualifies for $900 while the GL320 is good for $1,800. If diesel still isn't your thing, the IRS has also qualified several Ford hybrids as eligible too. Of those, the highest credit (a sweet $3,000) goes to those consumers who take home an Escape or Mariner two-wheel drive hybrid crossover. [Source: Automotive News , subs. req'd] Permalink |...
  • In the Autoblog Garage: 2008 Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG [w/VIDEO]

Filed under: In the Autoblog Garage , Sedans/Saloons , Tech , Videos , Mercedes-Benz , AMG Click above for high-res gallery of the AMG S63 There was a time when what we might call super-sedans were largely the province of a dedicated cadre of aftermarket tuners. Companies like Brabus, Alpina and, of course, AMG would generally start with mid-sized German sedans and transform them into something truly special. AMG in particular came to the forefront in 1987 after two decades of building special Mercs when they unleashed the Hammer. They had been building cars for two decades already, but the Hammer took things to a new level by installing a 5.6L V8 from the 560SEC coupe modified with twin-cam four valve heads into the mid-size 300E sedan. With that car, AMG set off an arms race that continues to this day. The tuners are still out there but AMG was eventually brought in from the cold when it was bought by Mercedes-Benz. Today AMG produces high performance versions of almost all Mercedes models...
  • Väth V63RS latest tuning option for AMG fans

Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Mercedes Benz Click above for high-res gallery of the Väth V63RS There's no shortage of Mercedes-Benz tuners, and we're used to having news tips in our email box regarding BRABUS, Kleemann, Lorinser, Carlsson, etc. That's why we were curious when we received a tip about a company taht we'd never heard of called Väth. The German aftermarket company has products for the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup, the latest of which is the V63RS Clubsport based on the C63 AMG that you see here. Väth essentially leaves the exterior untouched and focuses on the performance including an upgrade of the V8 to 585 bhp and 509 lb-ft torque that will power the car to a top speed of 202 mph. Other upgrades available include a sport suspension, high performance brakes, 19-inch wheels, and sport seats. Complete cars are available at a hefty 125,000 Euros, although components can be purchased individually, as well. Just like the BRABUS...
  • Brabus prices the Bullit Black Arrow (aka twin-turbo V12 C-Class)

Filed under: Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Supercars , Mercedes Benz Click above for high-res gallery of the BRABUS Bullit Black Arrow We can't imagine many sedans that could take out the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V without breaking a sweat, but the BRABUS Bullit Black Arrow could do it without question. Announced earlier this year and shown for the first time at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show in March, the Bullit Black Arrow by BRABUS is your garden variety everyday Mercedes-Benz C-Class stuffed with a 730-horsepower twin-turbo 6.3L V12. The whole thing is done up in matte black, presumably for stealth reasons so that the dark saloon can reach its 225 mph top speed undetected by radar until it's too late for the po-po to do anything about it. The Bullit Black Arrow will hit 62 mph in 3.9 seconds, so it should just beat the CTS-V in that respect if the tires don't revert entirely to a gaseous state first. Of course, there are plenty of other upgrades, including all-carbon fiber front and rear...
  • Spy Shots: 2009 Mercedes-Benz E63

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedans/Saloons , Wagons/Estates , Geneva Motor Show , Mercedes Benz The launch of the next Mercedes-Benz E-class is right around the corner and Car 's spies were able to catch a mildly camo'd mule undergoing testing. The prototype is unmistakably M-B, with a new front fascia that appears to split the difference between the swoop CLS's headlamps and the more conservative eyes of the C- and S-class. Underneath the cloaked sheet metal is Mercedes' new W212 mid-size sedan platform, which ditches the electronic braking system of the last generation (Benz dealers rejoice!) in favor of conventional hydraulic stoppers, and utilizes a four-link front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement coupled with M-B's Active Body Control (ABC) system. Naturally, there will be gizmos galore, including a new electronic road sign reading system, night-vision pulled from the S-class and a host of gasoline- and diesel-powered engines that will top out with the...
  • Audi and BMW to utilize 8-speed gearboxes to take on Lexus

Filed under: Car Buying , Sedans/Saloons , SUVs , Tech , Audi , BMW , Lexus , Mercedes Benz As we reported last month , it appears BMW and Audi, following the lead of Lexus, will begin to offer eight-speed automatic transmissions in their flagship models. Sources are now saying the transmission will be supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen, a familiar German supplier to both marques. Although we don't know all of the specifics, Audi is expected to debut the new slushbox in the range-topping A8 sedan , Q7 SUV , and their future A7 premium model . BMW will likely debut the new gearbox in their premium 7-Series sedan and the X6 Sport Activity Vehicle , according to company sources. The current Audi A8 and BMW 7-Series both use six-speed automatics. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class utilizes a seven-speed automatic of their own design, while Lexus debuted their eight-speed transmission (used in their LS models) four years ago. Increasing the number of forward gears offers advantages in smoothness, acceleration...
  • Mercedes offers up C63 AMG as Official Safety Car of DTM

Filed under: Motorsports , Sedans/Saloons , Mercedes Benz Click above for a high-res gallery of the M-B C63 AMG DTM safety car. The Mercedes-Benz SL63 might have the honor of being picked as the official safety car for Formula One, but the equally badass, slightly more affordable and dangerously practical C63 AMG has been chosen to run ahead of the DTM racers, minus its 250 km/h speed limiter. While the DTM safety car might look exactly like its production counterpart, save the roof-mounted lights and decals, the suspension, brakes, cooling system and exhaust have all been modified. To help keep the stock 457 hp, 6.2-liter V8 from running too hot while trying to avoid a DTM car-shaped enema, the radiator has been upgraded, along with a larger transmission oil cooler and two engine oil coolers mounted behind the front bumper's large air dams. Additionally, the rear axle cooling fins have been optimized to provide better airflow and benefits from a remote oil cooler. The AMG C63 DTM safety...
  • Ralf Schumacher tanks on DTM debut

Filed under: Motorsports , Sedans/Saloons , Euro , Mercedes Benz , AMG People hold all sorts of unsubstantiated opinions. That's how we know there must be some people out there somewhere who still think that Ralf Schumacher is as talented as his brother. Those people were shown otherwise this past Sunday when the junior Schumi made his race debut in DTM, the German touring car series. In the DTM season opener at Hockenheim, Ralf came in fourteenth place, well behind returning champion Mattias Ekstrom's new Audi A4 racer and that of team-mate Timo Scheider, completing a one-two finish for Ingolstadt. Ralf-boosters can blame the unfamiliarity of the C-Class race car which he was driving, but the track itself should have been familiar territory for the flunked-out former F1 driver. Compare that with his brother Michael who's been burning rubber and taking names on motorcycles altogether and it becomes all that much clearer who wears the racing overalls in the Schumacher family...
  • Mercedes unveils new range of diesel four-cylinders

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Euro , Green , Mercedes Benz Click above for a high-res gallery of the new M-B four-pot diesels. With lots of AMG goodness on the road and in the pipeline, something's got to balance out Mercedes-Benz' carbon footprint. So M-B announced today that it's releasing a new range of four-cylinder diesel mills that balances emissions, fuel economy and performance. The top-of-the-line 2.1-liter oilburner is producing 204 hp and 368 lb.-ft. of torque, or around 20-percent more than its predecessor, while returning better mileage and reducing emissions by over 10-percent. When fitted in the new C-class (250CDI) it's able to make the run to 60 in 7.7 seconds while getting 46 mpg. The other upcoming C-class models will include the 220 CDI and 200 CDI, producing 170 hp and 136 hp respectively. The boost in performance and fuel efficiency comes from the use of new twin-stage turbochargers, more efficient exhaust recirculation, intercoolers, injection systems...
  • Spy Shots: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedans/Saloons , Mercedes Benz Mercedes has been expanding its range faster than an invading army, with more three-starred vehicles popping up in segments we didn't even know existed previously. (Probably because they didn't.) What that ultimately means is that, at any given time, Mercedes is preparing a whole slew of new vehicles as each of their lifecycles comes due for replacement. Next up to bat is the E-Class, one of the mainstream staple vehicles in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. As with every successive new E-Class, the latest rendition is expected to feature even more hi-tech gizmos than ever before. Reports suggest brakes that wipe themselves dry in wet weather and more sensors than a bank vault, measuring everything from eye movement to crosswinds. Styling-wise, the E-Class is expected to borrow cues from its big brother the S-Class, but we're not sure that would be such a good thing. Of course the most heart-racing features will form part of...
  • Rendered Speculation: Mercedes-Benz CLE four-door coupe

Filed under: Spy Photos , Trends , Coupes , Sedans/Saloons , Mercedes Benz Mercedes jump-started a new trend of four-door coupes with the CLS. But after several years of having the niche market to itself, the German automaker is bracing for an onslaught of competition, from above and from below. While the Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide attempt to take the four-door coupe formula even farther upmarket, Volkswagen has launched its assault by undercutting the CLS with the new CC (until now known as the Passat CC) . If the reports are to be believed, it's the latter that Daimler sees as the bigger threat, and the automaker is preparing to launch its own counter-assault with what's being dubbed as the CLE. Like the CLS is based on the E-Class, the CLE would be based on the C-Class. But instead of coming in under the C-Class like the recently facelifted but still ageing CLC , the CLE would likely slot in between the C and E. Most of the mechanics would probably also carry over...
  • Matte Missile: BRABUS Bullit Black Arrow to attack Geneva

Filed under: Aftermarket , Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Sports/GTs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Supercars , Mercedes Benz , Brabus Click above for high-res gallery of the BRABUS Bullit Black Arrow At its Frankfurt introduction last year, the BRABUS Bullit was positioned as the tuner's ultimate "sleeper." Painted a fairly standard-looking gray with subdued black wheels and carbon-fiber accents, the Bullit did differ from some of BRABUS' more wildly extroverted vehicles, which scream "SUPER TUNER! LOOK AT ME!" That's not to say that the Bullit doesn't have the creds, though -- a 720-horsepower twin-turbo V12 with torque electronically limited to 811 lb-ft will certainly get the job done. (Sans the electronic safety net, it produces 974 lb-ft, in case you were wondering. Tires become one with the ozone layer at the mere thought of this.) For Geneva this year, BRABUS is bringing the Bullitt Black Arrow . What's different about it? Not much, except that its...
