Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Green , Hyundai Hyundai is making a serious run at such stalwart luxury marques as Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and BMW with the Genesis sedan. The Korean automaker is already competing directly with those established players using its current range of engines and transmissions, with the 4.6-liter V8 being mated to the same 6-speed ZF automatic tranny that sees duty in various Bimmers and Jaguars. Sometime around 2010, Hyundai will have a new 8-speed automatic ready for public consumption that being developing in-house, and it will surely see the light of day in the Genesis mated up to Hyundai's latest V8 engine. That development will trump Mercedes by one gear and match the number of ratios offered by Lexus. BMW is expected to rely on a new unit from ZF, its longtime supplier, that should also feature eight forward gears. In the never-ending quest for increased performance and fuel efficiency, plus a bit of one-upmanship, expect more automakers to pair their largest...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai Click above for a gallery of the Hyundai-RKSport Genesis concept sedan One of our faithful readers was hanging out a gas station not far from our Detroit offices when he spotted what was clearly a new Hyundai Genesis sedan getting a fill up. Now seeing Genesis sedans and other Hyundais in various states of camouflage is not out of the ordinary in these parts over since the Hyundai-Kia America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI) is in the area. This particular Genesis is something a little different though. Notice those indentations in the hood and missing bits of trim? A little digging revealed that this is in fact the car that is being developed in cooperation with RKSport for the SEMA Show in Las Vegas this November. RKSport is working on body and suspension modifications for the car, while the engineers at HATCI are working on engine mods. We don't know which engine will be under the hood, although the words "powertrain...

Filed under: Aftermarket , SEMA , Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai , Special/Limited Editions Click above to enlarge There are six modded Genesis' planned for SEMA: three coupes, three sedans. The coupes have been worked over by Street Concepts , HKS , and Rhys Millen . A rendering of the first tricked-out Genesis sedan from RKSport has rumbled onto the page, and it looks less like competition for the 5 Series than it does a challenger to the Death Star. The Platinum Silver sedan will wear carbon fiber accessories and a couple of spoilers as it hunkers on its oversized TSW wheels. RKSport's take on this car is to raise the performance stakes, and it's going to have Hyundai's help doing it. The whipped cream on the sunday will be a K&N air intake, Magnaflow exhaust, Eibach springs, Baer brakes, and a body kit. The sunday itself consists of performance upgrades that Hyundai is giving to the car's Tau V8 engine. The Korean automaker is hush-hush on those changes, but...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Safety , Hyundai Hyundai's all-new Genesis sedan made yet another smashing impression as it pulled-off perfect 5-star ratings in recent U.S. government testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Korean luxury vehicle was sent into a fixed barrier at 35 mph with two crash dummies strapped inside. Once the dust settled, instruments revealed both front seat passengers would have had less than a 10 percent chance of injury -- results earning 5-star ratings. Front and rear seat side impact testing revealed a low probability of injury as well, also earning the car 5-star ratings. In NHTSA rollover testing, the Genesis exhibited less than a 10 percent chance of rollover, again placing it among the top performers in that category. The admirable crash test scores earned by Hyundai's first venture into the luxury segment are sure to give the competition even more sleepless nights, especially considering all that luxury and safety...

A reader by the name of Steve did just so and was rewarded with some pictures of Hyundai's latest and greatest models. Why, you may wonder, was the Korean automaker testing these vehicles? They were likely undergoing high elevation testing, as they were snapped on Mount Evans in Colorado. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway , leading to the summit overlook, is the highest paved road in North America (thanks, Wikipedia!). There's plenty to see here. We've all seen the Genesis Coupe before, but not in yellow, and it looks good. The Portico doesn't really get the blood boiling, but it could turn into an important Edge\Traverse fighter for the Koreans. Perhaps the most interesting car here is what appears to be a heavily disguised Equus sedan . Being that its covered head-to-toe, we had to look closely...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai , Lifestyle InsideLine, no strangers to luxury, recently put the Hyundai Genesis up against the kind of competition the Korean automaker wants to be associated with: the Lexus GS 350. The GS 300 first came out in 1993 and had the luxury re-defining LS and ES for siblings; at the time, Hyundai was still making do with Excel, Sonata, and Scoupe, and parking any of them next to a Lexus would have laid bare the gulf. Now the marques are going head-to-head. This, ladies and gentlemen, is what we call progress. Still, issues of cost -- and perception -- skew the comparison slightly. The V8 Hyundai goes up against a V6 Lexus, because adding two more cylinders to the Lexus would have meant a $12,000 difference. As it is, there's still almost $8,000 between them. And there's the fact that the Lexus and the Hyundai don't exactly compete with each other (we'd have thought an ES comparo would make more sense) in brief, either. Nevertheless, it's...

Filed under: Tuners , Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai Click above for more high-res pics of the Genesis DUB-ified Who says you need to wait for Hyundai's Genesis Coupe to get your tuning freak on? Not the rims and system folks over at DUB, who took two Genesis (Geneses?) and kitted one out like, well, KITT, and the other kind of like a Stormtrooper from Star Wars . For an interior we can't exactly describe as attractive, the white one's not that bad -- certainly not as bad as it could have been. Still, following Wesley Snipes' advice from Passenger 57 , we're going to bet on black. Check out the gallery of hi-res images below. Thanks for the tip, Hyundaifan! Filed under: Car Buying , Sedans/Saloons Click on the image above for our high-res Hyundai Genesis gallery To lure buyers towards the all-new 2009 Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan, the Korean automaker is aggressively pricing lease programs. Traditional Hyundai customers choose to lease about 10-12 percent of the time. The Genesis, however, is aimed at a more upscale buyer -- a segment that tends to lease more often (according to Hyundai's estimates, 50 percent of the Genesis customers will lease the new sedan). To drive sales, the standard six-cylinder model, with a base price of about $33,000, will lease for $399/month (24-month lease with $2,199 due at signing). It's a deal that undercuts the Cadillac CTS by nearly $150/month, according to a retailer who sells both. With 80 percent of customers expected to choose the V6 model (we would too), the lease program is bold enough to drive traffic. In case you were wondering, the V8 model won't be in showrooms for another month, and...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Tech , Hyundai Click above for hi-res gallery of the Hyundai Genesis The story of what's underneath -- and inside -- the Hyundai Genesis is central to the story of the car and what Hyundai's trying to do with it. The body-in-white of the Genesis has a larger total body area than the Lexus LS460 and Mercedes S-Class. Yet ten years ago, if we had asked you which carmaker would create a rear-wheel-drive V8 sedan with a body structure that is larger, yet stiffer and lighter than the 5-Series or E-Class, would you have guessed it would be Hyundai? Of course, you probably wouldn't have guessed that BMW would be selling all the MINIs it could make, or that Alfa Romeo would sell out a run of $200K supercars. The lesson: the games -- plural -- have changed for everyone. Follow the jump to find out how the Genesis is the spearhead of change for Hyundai and, if Hyundai gets its wish, the entire luxury segment. And be sure to check out the gallery of hi-res...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai A few weeks back we posted a video of a South Korean automotive journalist performing one of the first road tests of the new Hyundai Genesis sedan, albeit the South Korean market model. Without getting into too much detail, he didn't like it and complained of body roll, mushy brakes, tires not up to the task, etc. It was as if someone gave this guy a Buick when he was expecting a BMW. Hyundai Motor America was caught off guard by this video and contacted us with their concern. According to them, the U.S.-spec version of the Genesis sedan and the South Korean version are markedly different, with the Yank-ified version tuned much more for a sporty driving experience. The South Korean market, we're told, favors a different kind of large luxury sedan, one that's softer, more luxurious, and to be blunt, more Buick-like. So we asked Hyundai, "What's so different about the U.S.-spec version?" While they couldn't divulge all the...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Etc. , Hyundai Hyundai expects the 2009 Genesis Sedan to fly off the showroom floor. However, few were probably amused when a pair of the brand-new Korean sedans took a leap from a transporter. We don't know many details other than the incident occurred somewhere in South Korea. Of course, we don't consider this incident extremely newsworthy, but as a blog we do find these automotive-related human errors with expensive aftermaths rather fascinating. Keep 'em coming. Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai Click above for a high-res gallery of the Hyundai Genesis sedan. It's official. After gauging public reaction, Hyundai has decided not to slap on the automaker's swoopy "H" logo onto the Genesis sedan's front grille. Two versions of the sedan were on display in Detroit , one with the aforementioned badge prominently placed in the center of the fascia and the other, which has been around since the introduction of the Genesis Concept , sporting the krill-grille sans logo. We're evenly divided about which looks better, but the general consensus is that the debadged front end had more of an upscale air. Speaking with Automotive News , Hyundai's vice president of product development, John Krafic, said that Hyundai is expecting about 20-percent of buyers to opt for the 4.6-liter V8. Interestingly, Krafic said that cylinder deactivation and direct injection could be added on future models and that a supercharger could find its...

Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Safety , Videos , Hyundai The Hyundai Genesis has just finished shooting its close-up. Shot in what looks like ABC Super Slo Mo, you get a pretty good idea of how you'll fare in a Genesis should you encounter another large object at speed. During the frontal impact test the passenger cabin remained virtually unaffected, and after seeing the side impact test all we can say is thank goodness for side airbags. Who knows, if the Genesis keeps turning in these kinds of performances, it could one day be a star. Follow the jump for the footage. Thanks for the tip, wowfactor! Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai click above to view more high-res images of different Genesis grille When the production version of the Hyundai Genesis was revealed, debate over its styling was a hot topic. Of particular interest to commenters was the grille , dubbed the "Klingon forehead" by some of you, which has a vertical center spine with three horizontal bars that turn down when they meet from either side. We instantly noticed the absence of Hyundai's logo on the grille and surmised that perhaps the Korean automaker felt that the presence of its logo would somehow divert attention away from the levels of luxury and refinement that people might normally associate with Hyundais. With that in mind, we were surprised to find this Genesis V6 model with a different grille on the floor of the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. When asked what it was doing there, Hyundai responded that the badgeless grille is the only Genesis grille for now, but this version was...
