  • Detroit 2008: Kia Borrego arrives at the wrong time

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Kia click above for more high-res live shots of the 2009 Kia Borrego Perhaps the biggest news about the Kia Borrego is that it marks the introduction of a V8 to the Korean automaker's powertrain arsenal. On the other hand, maybe we're just power-addled. Lobbing an entry into the midsize-SUV arena, Kia has stuck with the traditional body-on-frame strategy that many other automakers are abandoning. Styling wise, the Borrego is familial with the Kia Sorento, and neither 'Ute is bad looking. Even when blinged out with the highest trim level, the Borrego will skim along under the radar pretty easily. Those wheels, however, look like they were lifted from an unattended concept car on the show floor. Coil springs hold up all four corners, and stability and traction control are standard. Playing in the dirt will be aided by twin hill-traversing systems; Downhill Assist Control (DAC) and Hill Assist Control (HAC). One's for going down, the...
  • Detroit 2008: Jeep Renegade Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , Hybrids/Alternative , SUVs , Green , Chrysler , Jeep Click image for high-res gallery Chrysler is showing three concepts that leverage the automaker's ENVI electric vehicle tech tech today in Detroit. The Chrysler ccoVoyager and Dodge ZEO concepts will be covered in separate posts, but they share their main electric drivetrains with Jeep's open-air concept. At the center of ENVI is a 200 kW (268 hp) electric motor with a 40 mile range that's powered by lithium ion batteries. The Renegade concept uses a pair of these -- one on each axle to create a proper 4X4 -- and adds a low gear mode, locking differentials, and a Bluetec diesel "range-extender" engine that gives it the equivalent of 110 mpg when combined with the electric motors. We see a little of the 1998 Jeepster Concept in the Renegade's front end, but beyond that, the little two-seater goes its own way, putting a modern spin on the Wrangler ethos that incorporates...
  • Detroit 2008: Land Rover LRX lights up Motor City

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Land Rover click above to view more high-res images of the Land Rover LRX Concept While not as awe-inspiring as the Audi R8 V12 TDI or the Mazda Furai , Land Rover's LRX Concept still made waves in Detroit. Photos and details of the LRX were let loose a month ago, so we weren't too surprised at what was under the tarp. From afar, the 2-door mini-ute doesn't necessarily look impressive, but a closer look reveals some amazing details. Take for instance the "LRX" logo engraved in the tire tread, or the "Land Rover" inscribed taillights. And of course there's the interior, which lights up differently depending on how the vehicle is being used. Perhaps more importantly is what the LRX as a whole represents for the Land Rover brand. Future models will likely take on planet-saving characteristics of the LRX including reduced weight, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced CO2 emissions. Take a look at the...
  • Detroit 2008: Next-gen Honda Pilot Prototype appears

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Crossovers/CUVs , Honda click above image to view more high-res images of the Honda Pilot Prototype Honda's big debut today was its next-gen Honda Pilot. While we've already shown you the concept sketch , we saw the real thing today. Although still labeled a prototype, it's not hard to see the next-generation Pilot SUV under that prototypified skin. Just like we saw when they showed us the Accord Coupe "Concept" last year, we expect the production Pilot vehicle to look very similar to this. The next-gen Pilot will feature Honda's ACE Advanced Compatibility Engineering safety technology and VCM cylinder deactivation management system that's also available on the Accord V6. The Variable Cylinder Managaement system allows this V6 to run on 6, 4 or 3 cylinders depending on the need. The new Pilot also sports better interior packaging with seating for up to eight passengers, as well. Overall, we find the exterior...
  • Detroit 2008: BMW unwraps the production X6

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Tech , Crossovers/CUVs , BMW click above to view more high-res images of the BMW X6 Dropping the "concept" descriptor that it carried in Frankfurt , the BMW X6 was just revealed at the Detroit Auto Show in full production trim. Not surprisingly, it's almost identical to what we saw in Frankfurt, with a sharply-raked backlight and hatchback replacing the squared-off rump of the X5. BMW likes to describe it as a blend between a coupe and a crossover, which leads us to ask - is it possible to crossover from something that's already a crossover? Does this mean that it's been double-crossed? The mind boggles. Follow the jump for our first impression... • Detroit 2008: HUMMER HX Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , HUMMER var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/autos/HUMMER_HX_questions_the_Jeep_Wrangler_s_manhood'; Well, there's another embargo blown. HUMMERForums dropped all the images they had of the HUMMER HX concept that was due to be officially unveiled in a scant five days, and Jalopnik followed suit. So here it is, HUMMER's Wrangler-competitor in concept form, complete with a 3.6-liter SIDI E85 FlexFuel engine which sends power to all four wheels via a six-speed auto 'box. The HX is technically a convertible, meaning that the roof panels and modular rear can open or be stowed, while the interior instruments can be reconfigured depending on the type of driving you'll be doing. All the details are available in the press release after the jump. Gallery: Detroit 2008: HUMMER HX Concept Continue reading Detroit 2008: HUMMER HX Concept Permalink | Email this | Comments
  • Pics Aplenty: Kia Mohave/Borrego launches in Korea

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Etc. , Kia We've already seen some undisguised pictures of Kia's handsome new midsize SUV, but the vehicle just launched officially in Korea as the Mohave. Official launch means official pictures, and that's what we have here, a ton of really beautiful images of what we'll soon know as the Borrego. Not that Borrego, this one sports a full frame, seating places for seven, and the choice of Kia's strong-like-bull V6 or their first V8. The wisdom of introducing a new body-on-frame SUV at this point, especially in light of the coming new CAFE rules, might be questionable, but the vehicle itself is handsome and it's hard to deny the inherent value that Kia bakes into its cars. We'll check the Borrego out in person when it makes it's US debut at the Detroit Auto Show. In the meantime, Carscoop unearthed a lot of great pictures to tide us over. • Detroit '08 Preview: Mercedes GLK Freeside concept image leaked

Filed under: Detroit Auto Show , Spy Photos , SUVs , Mercedes Benz The North American International Auto Show in Detroit is right around the corner, where Mercedes is anticipated to unveil the vehicle you see here: the Mercedes-Benz GLK Freeside concept. Official images and details are expected in a manner of days, but someone at Daimler headquarters has apparently let the proverbial cat out of the bag. Like the "Vision" concepts that Mercedes used to give us in the '90s, the GLK Freeside "show-car" is more of a pre-production prototype than a design study, and is tipped to closely mirror what the production GLK will look like. We already got a preview of the production model when the GLK showed up undisguised on the set of Sex and the City , of all places. The "Freeside" moniker, which seems dangerously close to the "Freelander" named used by Land Rover, is not expected to carry over when the little truck goes into production. This leaked photo...
  • Detroit Preview: HUMMER HX Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , HUMMER click above image for more sketches of the HUMMER HX Concept Talk about a dream job. David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski are three fresh-faced grads of the College for Creative Studies (where many car designers get their schoolin') and recent new-hires of the GM Design division. Their first assignment handed down from on high was this: "provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles." Under the supervision of HUMMER design studio director Carl Zipfel, each young designer was assigned to either the wheelbase, approach and departure angles or stance - three core HUMMER proportions - and otherwise given liberty to design away. Though all three came up with their own visions, the won you see above was chosen by the suits to be transformed into an actual concept to be shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. The press release states that the E85 Flex Fuel-capable HX Concept features a pair of removable...
  • Detroit Preview: Land Rover LXR Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Crossovers/CUVs , Land Rover click above image to enlarge Remember that concept sketch Land Rover released around the time of the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show? It showed a sleek, two-door SUV, but being a teaser contained no additional information about when or where the actual concept would debut. Based on past precedent, we surmised that Land Rover would debut the concept this January at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, and based on this single image sent by a reader to Carscoop.com, it appears that might be the case. The reader claims this is an official image of the Land Rover LXR Concept, a two-door concept SUV that precedes a production model to be slotted in below the Freelander and available for sale sometime in 2011. We don't know how the reader obtained the image, and we're not asking. Land Rover is currently enjoying its best sales year in history, so expanding the lineup with an even more attainable model seems like a bright...
  • Detroit 2007 Preview: Jeep Renegade Concept

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Green , Jeep click above image for more views of the Jeep Renegade Concept The final concept of Chrysler's trio for the 2008 Detroit Auto Show is the Jeep Renegade Concept. We actually find this one the most interesting, both in terms of design and feasibility. The Renegade features all-aluminum construction to keep its weight down, as well as what appears to be a parallel hybrid drivetrain consisting of the same 40-mile lithium-ion battery pack used in the Chrysler ecoVoyager Concept sharing duties with a small-displacement BLUETEC diesel engine. Jeep claims the Renegade would be good for more than 110 miles per gallon, which we think is probably accurate. Hopefully we'll begin seeing fuel economy numbers like that when lithium-ion battery packs become more prevalent, as well as diesel engines for that matter. The Renegade's design is typical Jeep, focusing on adventure in all weather conditions. The speedster windshield...
