Filed under: Sedans/Saloons , Sports/GTs , SUVs , Wagons/Estates , Geneva Motor Show , Aston Martin , Rendered Speculation When we recently posted on Aston Martin dragging Lagonda out of its crypt, one of the assertions was that "they've reportedly ruled out the possibility of a sport-ute." That might have been nothing more than a semantic turn, as Car & Driver is reporting that the first Lagonda will be "something SUV-ish." Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez said the new car will have historical influences at the same time as it is "future-orientated," but the giveaway for C&D seems to be in his line that it will be "truly versatile" and "suitable for both existing and emerging markets." We can't tell if anyone actually came out and told the mag that the car would be an SUV, but an Aston source is quoted as saying it "wouldn't be an SUV in the same way as BMW X5." So back to the semantics of no "sport-ute"...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Detroit Auto Show , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Land Rover Click above for high-res gallery of the Land Rover LRX from Geneva We've big fans of the Land Rover LRX concept's styling, which looked as good in black ( unveiled in Geneva ) as it did in the original white ( unveiled in Detroit ). So we're suitably pleased by reports that Land Rover is preparing to build the vehicle, which could get the nameplate Freelander Sport in keeping with the nomenclature already set in place by the Range Rover Sport. The production LRX would target the likes of the upcoming BMW X1 and Audi Q5 (and potentially the Porsche Roxster), while offering a range of eco-friendly engine options that help Land Rover reduce its overall environmental impact. Such powertrain possibilities could include a 2.2-liter diesel and 3.2-liter gasoline inline-six with the potential for start-stop technology and even a hybrid system. Although the Freelander Sport would be oriented towards...

Filed under: Concept Cars , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Audi Click to view the Audi Q7 V12 TDI Coastline in hi-res The Audi Q7 Coastline is not the first attempt at infusing an automobile with a nautical theme, but it very well might be the most exquisite execution we've seen to date. Forget about automotive mishaps like the Mercury Villager Nautica edition and the Plymouth Breeze, this concept rivals even the teak-decked Rolls-Royce Phantom DropHead Coupe for dockside prowess. In fact, a Maserati convertible parked at a Monte Carlo marina would be jealous. This writer, meanwhile, would be hard-pressed to upstage Alex Nunez's poetic waxing for maritime prose in his preview post , but the pearl white sport-ute makes me feel like picking up the clear-coat polish and teak oil just the same. As you can see in our gallery of high-resolution images, Audi set up an exceptionally photogenic dedicated showroom off the Geneva show floor to showcase the 500hp V12 TDI that would be right at...

Filed under: Concept Cars , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Land Rover Click above to view the LRX concept in high resolution Segments keep blending and niches keep growing. We don't complain, though, when the results are as stunning as the LRX concept. Land Rover brought a second version of the show car to Geneva in a sharp new black-and-silver paintjob that would be our first choice for arriving at the Academy Awards if they were held on the moon. Hopefully the LRX is less pie-in-the-sky than that, though, because we want one. Or two. As sinisterly handsome as the carbon LRX looks from afar, the devil is in the details, which include such subtle modern touches as brushed-aluminum badging, grille, roof, vents and the like. And we like. Check out the images in the gallery below to see for yourself, and the details in our previous post . Gallery: Land Rover LRX Concept - Black & Silver Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: SUVs , Wagons/Estates , Geneva Motor Show , Hatchbacks , Peugeot Click the image above for hi-res shots of the Peugeot 308SW The Peugeot 308SW (for SportWagon), on the show floor, does not look like a big car. It certainly doesn't look big enough to swallow seven full-sized people. On the rotating podium, however, the car looked almost monstrous. Get inside, and the car appears to be even larger. If you sit in the driver's seat in Geneva, the rear hatch lies somewhere around Lichtenstein. It's that capacious. As with so many French things, the pics don't do it justice, but have a look at the gallery of hi-res photos to see if you can see what we see. Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Green , BMW Click the image above for a hi-res gallery of the BMW X5 Vision EfficientDynamics A man might not be a camel, but BMW's X5 Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid is. The vehicle, with its twin-turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine mated to a li-ion battery pack that doesn't need to be refueled until after the Apocalypse. by then, fuel will probably be the last of your worries. Special aero rims, a solar roof panel to heat up engine fluids before you start the vehicle, an 8-speed transmission, and X5 room and ride only make it all the sweeter. Check out the hi-res gallery of shots below to get as close as we did to it. Gallery: BMW X5 Vision EfficientDynamics Concept Permalink | Email this | Comments

Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Land Rover Click image for a hi-res gallery of the Black & Silver Land Rover LRX And here we thought it looked good in white . Land Rover is quick to remind that the LRX is "just a concept," but it's sending a pretty strong message in Geneva, where a second , black-and-silver LRX will join the original white truck that premiered in Detroit . And the new one is even hotter than the original, itself one of the best concepts of the last year. It's supposed to demonstrate how a (potential) production LRX could be personalized, and we would like to have one delivered to our personal garage approximately yesterday. The rakish shape now features a silver roof fitted with side rails and a removable carbon-composite panel. This beautifully contrasts the black primary finish, and aluminum-accented details do their part to further dress up the exterior. As a subtle reminder to onlookers that this...

Filed under: SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Green , Crossovers/CUVs , Audi Click above for high-res gallery of the Audi Q7 V12 TDI Audi may not have any current plans to offer the monster R8 V12 TDI it showed in Detroit to consumers, but that doesn't mean the 12-cylinder oil burner is going to waste. We first saw Audi's 6L V12 diesel mounted in a Q7 V12 TDI concept at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show , and now it looks like it will be heading to showrooms. Volkswagen's southern branch will be offering the Q7 V12 TDI quattro to customers with enough cash, although exactly how much lettuce will be needed is unknown at this point. Audi plans to start taking pre-orders for the 758 lb-ft, all-wheel-drive seven-seater in the second half of this year. The Germans also haven't said if U.S. dollars will be acceptable for the transaction or Euros will be required. What we do know is that mind-boggling torque figure and the 500 hp peak coming from the V12 oil burner. Even in this large, high...

Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Green , BMW Click above for a high-res gallery of the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics X5. Every auto show nowadays has to have its fair share of "green" concepts, and Geneva won't be any different. Over at the BMW stand, the automaker will be showing off its Vision EfficientDynamics Concept that's packing a twin-turbo, 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel that's mated to a hybrid motor. The diesel mill alone is making 204 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, but the addition of a compact generator increases power by another 20 hp and 154 lb.-ft. of torque. Power is sent through an eight-speed gearbox developed by ZF that features longer ratios to make the most of the miserly mill. BMW cites mpg figures in the 43.5-range, with 172 g/km of CO2 being shot on the tailpipe. Additionally, BMW has fitted a regenerative braking system to the X5, along with roof-mounted solar panels and aerodynamically enhanced 19...

Filed under: Spy Photos , SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Infiniti These are amateur shots of what is claimed to be the new Infiniti FX55. The front has been given the curvy treatment that is lately a mark of Nissan's design language, with the fenders pulled up like wings over the front wheels. The grill is the same rounded, convex trapezoid found on the G37, but beneath it the bumper juts out like an underbite, all of which is supported by a receding chin. From the side it looks like the car has pulled its hood back to snarl, like a canine. A sleek, segmented headlight housing wraps around to the sides, almost Ford Verve -like. The profile stays pretty much the same, which is good, since it's one of the rare SUV's that has managed to be sleek and stylish. Out back, it looks like there's a bit more curve added across the rear, and the tail lights get a similar, segmented design treatment. The "55" moniker could indicate a new 5.5-liter V8, or something completely different...

Filed under: SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Crossovers/CUVs , Volvo , UK Click the image above for a high-res gallery of live and studio shots of the Volvo XC60 concept. Volvo's presence at the Detroit auto show was mysteriously minimal, with only a sparsely populated booth and no scheduled press conference. Instead, the Swedes are turning their attention to Geneva, where Volvo will be showing off the 2009 XC60 , a compact CUV aimed at the Acura RDX, BMW X3 and a number of other soft-roaders currently populating the marketplace. The first round of speculation pegged the XC60's powerplant as the 3.2-liter inline-six pulled from the S80, but according to Inside Line, there is still some debate within Volvo about what will motivate the cute 'ute. A transversely mounted inline-five is one option, but regardless, buyers can opt for either front- or all-wheel-drive. Sales are expected to begin in late 2008 in Europe, with U.S. buyers getting their hands on the XC60 sometime in...

One of our intrepid readers, Kevin, sent us a few scans of the QQ's latest issue, where it outlines Audi's product plans for the next five years. While some of it has already been confirmed, other interesting factoids, including the future of the R8, RS-TT and the development of an R4, have long been rumored on these very pages. Follow the jump for the full breakdown on what Audi has in store, but be aware that we're handing out grains of salt below the fold. Filed under: SUVs , Geneva Motor Show , Euro , Toyota Click image for hi-res gallery of the Urban Cruiser Concept While its RAV4 is a sales success in Europe, Toyota has no entry with which to compete in the constantly-growing small SUV segment. The solution? Take the JDM Toyota Ist , which is essentially the USDM Scion xD, and make an SUV out of it. The butched-up variant will bow in March '08 at the Geneva show and go on sale in Europe shortly thereafter. According to Automotove News, the still-unnamed sport ute will derive its styling from Toyota's 2006 Urban Cruiser concept (above). No word yet on what the powertrain offering(s) will be, but we'll find out soon enough. March isn't all that far off.
