Filed under: SUVs , Government/Legal , Safety , HUMMER , Police/Emergency , Australia Question: What's more intimidating than a group of Australian Police roaming the streets in search of drunken party-goers? Answer: Aussie Police driving Hummer H3s with the same intent... supposedly. The Hummers in question were provided by the General in all-black before getting custom livery from the authorities, complete with a blue-and-red flashing light bar on top. Police hope to be a bit more conspicuous in the SUVs, which will be prowling the nightclub districts in Melbourne. There may be a few problems with this scheme, as there will only be five such vehicles making the rounds and they are only equipped with the standard five-cylinder powerplant. We think the Police should have visited another side of the General and raided the Holden parts bin for flat-black Mad Max-style Police cars made from the HSV W427 . For added attention, a straight-through set of true duals with Cherry Bombs would...

Auto Shows , Australia Click image for a hi-res gallery of the Mitsubishi "Panther" Concepts In addition to bringing the good stuff (Lancer Evo, Ralliart) to Melbourne, Mitsubishi has some schlock on hand to counterbalance the awesome. We're talking about the automaker's "Panther" concepts, which leverage bling, decals, and that whole "dealer-installed accessory" vibe to create all-show/no-go machines of questionable taste. We find those "panther scratch" stickers to be particularly egregious -- they'd look right at home on a busted-up Paseo with 15-inch spinner hubcaps. Check out the attached gallery to see what you like most or least about the five Panther concepts. We think the Pajero fares the best of the bunch, and while we'd love to have the Triton pickup in general, we could do without the 22-inch...

Filed under: SUVs , Crossovers/CUVs , Ford , Australia , FPV Click image for hi-res gallery Introduced at last year's Sydney Motor Show, the Ford territory-based FPV F6X has launched Down Under. It's just another in the string of Oztacular FPV products exclusive to the island continent, and it is the first FPV machine that isn't based on the Falcon sedan or ute. With looks that are reminiscent of the Freestyle/Taurus X, the all-wheel-drive F6X won't ever be confused for either thanks to its turbocharged 362 hp (270 kw), 405 lb-ft (550 nm) inline six and the performance it brings. The suspension is ret-uned for sport duty and the 18-inch rims hide upgraded brakes, featuring 6-pot Brembos in front, which heel the beast when necessary. Inside, a spiffy two-tone leather motif is standard, and outside, exclusive badging and optional striping are all part of the appearance package. Overall, it's pretty cool. The same can't be said for its price: $75,990 AUD is the starting...

Filed under: SUVs , Land Rover , Australia Click image to enlarge So, that UK-only Land Rover Defender SVX ? Turns out it's not UK-only. Well, the Defender 90 version is, but Blighty is not the only market getting an SVX to celebrate LR's 60th borthday. The Australians will blow out the candles with the Defender 110 SVX. The longer-wheelbase Outback stormer gets the same visual treatment as its shorter Brit-market brother, meaning a new grille surround, upgraded lighting, the spiffy five-spoke wheels, and a Recaro-adorned upgraded interior, among other things. 36 copies of the dressed-up yet rough-and-tumble Defender 110 SVX will arrive in Land Rover showrooms Down Under next year. Filed under: SUVs , Nissan , Australia Click image to enlarge Automakers making rough-and-ready versions of their SUVs is nothing new, but it's clear that some of these are more serious than others. Nissan Australia has whipped up a machine that falls solidly into the latter category with the special-edition Patrol DX Walkabout. In Walkabout trim, Nissan's venerable off-roader receives a laundry list of accessories as standard equipment, including a bull bar, snorkel, cargo barrier, side steps, alloy wheels, and $2,000 (AUD) worth of camping equipment. (Oh yeah, it gets a CD changer, too, so you can blast your Midnight Oil records while rumbling through the bush.) Power comes from a 158-hp/280 lb-ft 3.0L turbodiesel mated to either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. It's available in silver or white and is priced at AUD $49,990 (manual) and AUD $52,990 (auto). That money buys you a vehicle that's pretty much ready to frighten kangaroos and traverse the island continent...

Filed under: SUVs , Volvo , Misc. Auto Shows , Australia click above image to view exclusive high-res live shots of the VW R50 On sale this November, the Volkswagen R50 is the German automaker's first attempt at a performance oriented SUV. After seeing the R50 live in person at the 2007 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, our man on the floor reports back that Wolfsburg has a winner here. The R50 is based on the Touareg TDI with the firm's 5.0L V10 diesel engine. In R50 guise, the V10 gets an ECU tweak to pump more pressurized air from the twin turbos to produce 350 HP at 3,500 RPM and peak torque of 627 lb.-ft. at 2,000 RPM. That's good for a 0-62 MPH run of only 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 146 MPH. Plus you'll be styling and profiling on 21-inch rims framing bright blue calipers. Check out VW's press release after the jump and view our live shots in the updated gallery below. [Source: VW] Gallery: VW Touareg R50 Live photos (C)2007 Siddharth Raja / Weblogs, Inc. Continue...

Filed under: SUVs , Crossovers/CUVs , Ford , Misc. Auto Shows , Australia click either image to view more high-res shots of the Ford FPV F6 X var digg_url = 'http://digg.com/design/FPV_F6_X_crossover_with_362_HP_revealed_in_Australia_Pics'; Ford just announced a hot new CUV for the Australian market called the FPV F6 X. Based on Ford Australia's Territory SUV, the F6 X is the very first non-Falcon model modified by the brand's high-performance FPV division. Applying their trade to the Territory yields an SUV packing a turbocharged 4.0L inline six-cylinder engine producing 362 HP and 405 ft-lbs. of torque. Power is funneled through a ZF six-speed automatic, the only available transmission, and ends up at each wheel through a full-time all-wheel-drive system. In addition, the FPV F6 X features a host of acronyms like DSC, EBD and tractional control. Brembo six-piston calipers are responsible for scrubbing off speed while the suspension has been retuned by FPV for a firmer ride. Check out...
