Filed under: Green , Motorcycles Click above for a high-res gallery of the Brammo Enertia In amongst the various computers, televisions and small appliances at your local Best Buy store may soon be electric motorcycles. Starting in May, five locations near the West Coast will begin stocking the Brammo Enertia, a $12,000, carbon fiber-intensive two-wheeler that stores its power in large format, lithium-phosphate battery packs from Valence . We wondered about the possibility of the big box retailer offering the gas-free two-wheelers after Best Buy Capital extended a few million dollars in investment money to Brammo last September. According to Brammo CEO Craig Bramscher, "What we're selling is a lot closer to consumer electronics than to transportation." Features like integrated GPS and WiFi chips allow a bevy of interesting high-tech options for the Enertia, such as on-board cameras that can link up to the internet and automatically sort ride pictures by location. Sounds cool...

Filed under: Motorcycles It's generally an accepted truth that the big four Japanese motorcycle manufacturers will find some way to incrementally improve the performance of their various 600cc sportbikes year-after-year. At some point, you may begin to wonder just how much more juice can be extracted from a relatively small displacement engine. According to a recent test by Motorcycle.com , both the 2009 Yamaha R6 and the 2009 Honda CBR600RR are down a bit on the dyno compared to their 2008 siblings. Why? The Honda's issue may be related in part to U.S. noise regulations and the tricks that cycle manufacturers employ to get their screamers down to lawful decibel levels at their high-rpm power peaks. For its part, Yamaha has tried hard to boost the weak mid-rpm power that the ultra-aggressive R6 has been saddled with the last few years, but that retuning may have yielded too high a penalty at higher revs. This small problem doesn't seem to be affecting Kawasaki, though, as Team...

Filed under: In the Autoblog Garage , BMW , Motorcycles Click above for a gallery of the 2009 BMW R 1200 GS The rapidly expanding adventure-touring motorcycle genre is easiest to understand when you equate it to the booming sport-utility segment of the late '90s. However, unlike the majority of SUVs that hit the roads at the end of the last decade, today's adventure bikes actually posses equal parts sport and utility. The Bavarian motorcycle maker kick-started the category with the seminal R 80 G/S in 1980 and today, it dominates the class. In the interim, the GS line has undergone a series of upgrades, switching from airhead to oilhead engines in 1994 and expanding its range of single and twin-cylinder bikes, including the F 650 GS, F 800 GS and the penultimate R 1200 GS Adventure. The 2009 R 1200 GS is the culmination of BMW's efforts and the genre as a whole. Since its introduction in 2004, the range-topping GS has been updated to include a revised servo-less ABS braking...

Filed under: Recalls/TSBs , Safety , Suzuki , Motorcycles Suzuki, makers of the GSX line of sportbikes, has issued a recall on 26,082 GSX-R1000 motorcycles from 2005 and 2006. The trouble area is reportedly the bike's frame, specifically behind and below the steering neck near the front triple clamps. When ridden particularly aggressively - which we'll get to in a moment - this area is susceptible to cracking. If Suzuki finds any damage to any frame, it will be replaced with a newly reinforced unit. If no damage is found, a special brace will be added and covered by a new five-year warranty. So, what constitutes aggressive riding? Let's be honest. A good portion of literbike riders enjoy lofting the front wheel from time to time, even on the street where such antics can get you into big trouble. The reality, though, is that these bikes were designed to perform at the highest level under a relatively narrow window of operation, specifically in rounding a race track as quickly...

Filed under: Motorcycles As gas prices shot for the moon last summer, the tide of scooters and small-bore motorcycles began rising right alongside as commuters did all they could to save a buck or two on fuel bills. The folks at Consumer Reports took it upon themselves to reintroduce motorcycle testing to the popular magazine for the first time since 1981 in order to help their readership make informed purchasing decisions. Safety is of paramount concern when riders first take up the switch from four to two wheels, and this fact is hammered home by the rag's editors who designed a new 5.2-mile course that tests each motorcycle's handling characteristics, acceleration and braking capabilities. So, uh, how'd it go? The big winner was Vespa who's LX scooter managed to take top honors in the smallest 50cc class and also performed well against the slightly larger 150cc competitors where it tied with the Kymco People for the win. CR's first series of tests stopped at the 250cc...

Filed under: Green , Motorcycles Click above for high-res image gallery of the Mission One EV sport bike Mission Motors has just revealed its all-electric sport bike and the family-friendly version of our initial reaction goes something like, "Holy Mother of God and all that is good and decent!", followed immediately by the sound of our jaws hitting the floor. After a couple of years of staying almost perfectly in stealth mode, the Mission One is being unveiled today at the TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) conference. The Yves Béhar -designed bike sets a new performance standard for electric two-wheelers with a top speed of 150 mph and an estimated range of 150 miles. Of course, the strength of an electric drivetrain is torque and the Mission One has 100 lb-ft of the stuff on offer from the first twist of the throttle up until 60 mph. When it makes its race debut at the TTXGP on June 12th, we suspect the other entries will be scrappin' it out for second place...
