Filed under: Etc. , Government/Legal , Earnings/Financials , Lifestyle Virginia lawmakers are taking a metaphorical battering ram to suburban cul-de-sacs, those little dead-end roundabouts that are almost all adorned with a yellow sign saying "No Outlet." Caught out by spiraling maintenance and development costs, the Washington Post reports that legislators are now mandating that the state will only maintain new subdivision roadways that meet its revised requirements for narrower dimensions and increased connectivity. That maintenance includes not only things like pothole patches and striping, but also plowing in winter, meaning that the state's new laws will carry very real consequences for planners and developers who choose not to comply. The rise of cul-de-sacs occurred when suburban city planners and private developers decided it was better to have a few roads act as central spines instead of connecting all roads in a grid. Unfortunately, the result has been that the large...

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Vauxhall , Lifestyle Click above for a gallery of Kelsey-designed Vauxhall Collective accessories The folks charged with recasting perceptions of a brand aren't unlike home run hitters: a lot more misses than hits, but when they do hit it's often spectacular. This particular at-bat with Vauxhall, however, is probably a foul tip at best. The folks at the brand behind the griffin, whose logo was redesigned last year to be more dynamic and contemporary, has teamed with British shoe designer Jonathan Kelsey to create a Vauxhall Collective "luxury driving set." Kelsey is from the Jimmy Choo/Mulberry end of the fashion spectrum, and was asked to create line that celebrated "the great British Road trip." That's what he did... if you're going on a road trip with a '70s-era Elton John or Liberace. The three pieces - steering wheel cover, studded driving gloves, and keychain - will run you £195 (US $284). If you think...

Filed under: Marketing/Advertising , Audi , Lifestyle It's official: after General Motors gave up its place in the batter's box, Audi has become "The official luxury vehicle of the New York Yankees." For you regular Yankee fans, not much will change, except seeing the Audi logo when you look up at the H&R Block Suite Level and happen upon Audi cars in the Babe Ruth Plaza on occasional display dates. For you Yankees fans who like to spend a lot of money when you see a baseball game, you'll now be visiting the Audi Yankees Club, where Audi logos will adorn the doors, napkins, brochures and televisions. The partnership will last for three years until the end of the 2011 season. Filed under: Etc. , Plants/Manufacturing , UAW/Unions , Lifestyle , Event Alert In case you didn't know this was going on, Detroit is in the grips of the Assembly Line Concert, a 240-hour non-stop shebang that still has more than 100 hours to go. A. J. O'Neil, a Detroit-area coffee shop owner, decided to attempt a record-breaking charity event that would assist, support, and call attention to the American auto worker. He's done it by trying to line up 240 acts -- from professional bands to politicians (no, really) to Detroiters who just want to play a ditty to show their love -- that will perform one hour sets for ten straight days. And even though the folks in the logo are obviously listening to Skynyrd, the Free Bird folks won't be appearing. So far there are 213 acts scheduled. There's still time to play if you've got the feeling, and if you just want to watch, you can head down any time of the day or check out the concert's live feed . [Source: Assembly Line...

Filed under: Etc. , Lifestyle Click above for a gallery of the Babolat Propulse 2 with Michelin rubber Michelin, the tire company, has a division called Michelin Lifestyle Limited that focuses solely on extending the company's "Better Mobility Concept" to other arenas, the lastet one being center court. The brand of Bibendum has developed the outsole rubber for a range of Babolat's new tennis shoes, the Propulse and Team. With a tennis player's movements centered around "acceleration, braking, grip and relaunch" on a variety of different surfaces, the Michelin R&D lab probably had a good idea of what kind of rubber was needed. Michelin mated rubber technology from its auto racing programs with a revised version of its Optimized Cell System that uses seamless circlular micro-cells inspired by rally racing tires. The result is said to be exceptional grip and durability. And if it'sood enough for Sebastien Loeb, there's a good chance it's good...

In addition to a tribute to Paul Newman and screenings of Winning , Le Mans , and The Making of Le Mans , folks like Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant, Peter Brock, Brock Yates, and Pete Lyons will be there chatting up all those four-wheeled-things that go fast. If you're a movie and racing fan who's also into Maseratis, the museum has more than 30 of them on display, including an MC12 and that sweetness from sister brand Alfa Romeo called the 8C Competizione.
