  • Hyundai Assurance program unused by owners so far

Filed under: Car Buying , Hyundai Hyundai has scored a big marketing win with its incentive program that allows owners to return a new Hyundai within a year if they lose their job. Called the Hyundai Assurance program, the South Korean automaker sweetened the deal later by offering to pay up to three months of car payments before taking the car back so that owners would have time to look for a new job. While the rest of the auto industry has been hit with slumping sales in 2009, Hyundai sales were up in January and about even in February compared with 2008. Some of that certainly has to do with the peace of mind provided by the Hyundai Assurance program. But an incentive program isn't successful just because it sells more vehicles. The value of the incentive to the automaker goes down the more it cuts into the profit of each vehicle sold. So how much has the Hyundai Assurance plan cost so far? Aside from a few marketing dollars to get the word out - nothing. That's because despite...
  • Hyundai BLUE-WILL concept headed for Seoul

Filed under: Concept Cars , Hybrids/Alternative , Green , Hatchbacks , Misc. Auto Shows Hyundai BLUE-WILL Concept - Click above for high-res image gallery Hyundai has just released info on its plug-in hybrid concept for the upcoming Seoul Motor Show. Called the BLUE-WILL, the concept features a direct-inject 1.6-liter gas engine mated to a CVT transmission and 100kw electric motor. The car features a state of the art lithium ion polymer batter pack that's packaged with the fuel tank below the rear seats, as well as a trick panoramic roof that integrates solar cells while still being able to see through. The BLUE-WILL also features eco-friendly plastics, with some components, like the headlamp bezels, made out of recycled plastic bottles and other plastics derived from plant extracts. We're not sure where the plug goes, but Hyundai claims the parallel hybrid can be tethered to a wall socket for extra amps. The concept's five-door hatchback body style is striking with criss-crossing...

  • Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T gets strapped onto dyno

Filed under: Coupes , Sports/GTs , Hyundai As much as we're impressed by the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and its big, optional V6 engine, it's the little 2.0-liter turbocharged four banger that we're most excited about. The idea of a (relatively) lightweight and inexpensive rear-wheel drive coupe with a six-speed manual transmission is enough to make us weak in the knees, and the fact that it comes in a nice looking wrapper is an added bonus. Inside Line managed to score an early example from Hyundai equipped just the way we like it, and their testers have kindly strapped it on the dyno. Fortunately, the results don't disappoint, with the force-fed motor putting out 197 horsepower at the rear wheel and a peak of 227 lb-ft of torque at just 2500 rpm. Those figures compare very favorably with Hyundai's factory ratings of 210 ponies and 223 lb-ft, meaning that this little Korean's power is probably underrated by a fair margin. Looking at the graphs , it's also clear that...
  • Spy Shots: Kia Amanti replacement spotted cold-weather testing

Filed under: Spy Photos , Sedans/Saloons , Hyundai , Kia The Kia Amanti is what happens when designers can't decide whether to copy a Mercedes or a Jaguar, with the result being a quantifiable and qualified mess. Hyundai has quickly improved its styling with winners like the Genesis Coupe and Sedan, and we've been hoping for sister company Kia to follow suit. We can think of no better place to start than the replacement for the visually challenged Amanti, and spy pics from near the Artic Circle show that the affordable "luxury" (the quotes remain until proven otherwise) sedan is coming along quite nicely. This Kia mule, which we're told is codenamed VG, was covered in camouflage, but at first (obstructed) glance we see the silhouette of a far more contemporary sedan. The VG will ride on the same platform as the Hyundai Azera, giving the Amanti replacement a longer wheelbase than its predecessor. The stretch will give the Amanti more interior space, as evidenced by...
  • Hyundai CEO says early Genesis Coupe sales numbers are "simply smoking"

Filed under: Car Buying , Coupes , Sports/GTs , Hyundai 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe - Click above for high-res gallery "Simply smoking." Those are the exact words that John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai USA, used to describe early sales of the automaker's new Genesis Coupe during a recent interview with Motor Trend . The highly-anticipated two-door is selling better than the Genesis Sedan , which arrived on the market last year, even though Hyundai has focused more advertising dollars on the larger luxury sedan. Still a newcomer, the Genesis Coupe is offered in turbocharged 2.0-liter and normally-aspirated 3.8-liter trim. The bulk of the cars on dealer lots have been the V6 models, with the late-to-arrive four-cylinder variants (including the Track model and next year's R-Spec model) yet to make a significant impact on sales. Seemingly undeterred by its $27,500 sticker price, Krafcik says that more than 50 percent of the 3.8-liter buyers are driving home in the loaded Grand Touring...
