Filed under: Crossovers/CUVs , GMC GMC Terrain spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery In this day and age of information overload, there are hundreds of opportunities to break an embargo or accidentally publish information that was supposed to remain confidential for a wee bit longer. Such is the case today as General Motors itself has Tweeted a few salient details about the upcoming GMC Terrain, the embargo of which won't be up until April 5, 2009. According to a PR person from GM, the 2010 GMC Terrain will seat five adults, which isn't all that surprising in and of itself, but it's also expected to deliver 30 miles per gallon on the highway, and that's pretty good for a midsize crossover that can seat your entire brood. In fact, the only other five-seat 'utes that can beat that figure are its cousin, the new 2010 Chevy Equinox , the Ford Escape Hybrid, and Saturn Vue Hybrid. Interested in knowing more? Hang tight, we're sitting on all the rest of the...

Filed under: Recalls/TSBs , Safety , Buick , Chevrolet , GMC , Pontiac , Saturn Citing a defect that can cause a parked vehicle to roll away, General Motors is recalling 277,000 cars and trucks. The models involved, all built for the 2009 model year, may have a loose clip on their transmission shift cable. The failure of the clip to be locked into place may prevent the transmission from moving into Park - even if the driver moves the shift lever into the proper position. GM has told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that dealers will inspect the transmission shift cable and replace broken units. Affected models include the Buick Enclave , Chevrolet Cobalt , Chevrolet HHR , Chevrolet Malibu , Chevrolet Traverse , GMC Acadia, Pontiac G5, Pontiac G6 , Saturn Aura and Saturn Outlook. Filed under: SUVs , Auction Action , GMC Click above for gallery of the final 1993 GMC Typhoon I happen to be a big fan of the GMC Typhoon and was probably a little more excited than I should've been when it was announced that the very last one made, a 1993 model that's been stowed away in the GM Heritage Collection all these years, was to be auctioned off at this year's Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale auction. I waited anxiously the day of the auction for the text to come in from our live coverage team. The news wasn't good. The '93 Typhoon with just 130 miles had gone for $52,800 including auction fees . Youch. I just happen to have an eBay Motors alert set to inform me whenever a Typhoon goes up for sale on the internet auction site, and lo and behold, the very same Typhoon we saw in Scottsdale showed up there today . The seller, who we presume to be the same person that bought the performance SUV in Arizona, has a starting a bid of just $10,000, but we're fairly certain...

Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Trucks/Pickups , Green , Chevrolet , GMC , First Drive Click above for high-res gallery of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrid With the 2009 editions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Hybrids just now beginning to appear on dealer lots around the country, we decided it would be a good idea to strap ourselves behind the wheel of the fuel-saving duo to see what fuel efficiency improvements we could manage in some typical city driving scenarios. Plus, there's all kinds of techno-wizardry at play as soon as the driver's right loafer touches the go-pedal, so we were keenly interested to see if The General was able to harness the power of three distinct power sources (one gas engine, two electric motors) while keeping everything smooth and controlled as one would expect from a $40,000 pickup truck. Filed under: Hybrids/Alternative , Trucks/Pickups , Green , Chevrolet , GM , GMC General Motors isn't saying how it plans to do it, but according to our friends at PickupTrucks.com , it is saying that consumers are "...going to see substantial improvements in towing capability in our next hybrids." Right now, the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid and GMC Sierra Hybrid can pull 6,100 pounds with their electrically-assisted, multi-displacement 6.0-liter V8 engines. The improvement will be "up to 50% more," meaning a tow rating of 9,000 pounds could be coming this way. If GM can wring a full 50% improvement out of the drivetrain, that would put the hybrids just 1,600 pounds short of the max towing capacity of the standard gasoline V8 crew cab half-ton with the enhanced tow package. The transmission torque capacity and the necessary cooling systems are the apparently the chief limitations to be overcome, and GM says if the current package can evolve enough, then "one of...

Filed under: Chicago Auto Show , Safety , GMC Click above for a gallery of K9s at the Chicago Auto Show For the second year in a row, the Chicago Auto Show has been invaded by our furry, four-legged friends as the Bark Buckle UP campaign announces its Pet Safe Choice Awards. We moseyed on down to the show floor to spend some quality time with the dozen or so K9s in attendance after they'd graduated from the American Kennel Club S.T.A.R. program. More to the point, here are the winners of the Pet Safe Awards: Pet Safe Vehicle of Choice: GMC Acadia Pet Safe Hotel of Choice: Hilton Hotels and Resorts Pet Safe Airline of Choice: American Airlines Pet Safe Retailer of Choice: PetSmart We were a bit shocked when the group informed us that 98% of all dogs that travel in vehicles do so unrestrained. This could be a major safety hazard, especially since pet travel has reportedly increased by 300% since 2005 and a 60-pound dog can turn into a 2,700 pound projectile in a 30 mph accident. Needless...

Filed under: SUVs , Crossovers/CUVs , GMC , Pontiac Anyone that's ever driven a Ford Crown Victoria in four inches of snow will tell you that the generations-old police interceptor doesn't exactly grip when sitting atop the white stuff. That can leave police just as stranded as the motorists they're out to need help. Coast Pontiac GMC in Portsmouth, New Hampshire provides the solution to the local fuzz's problem by loaning out SUVs during big storms. The generous dealer has been providing this public service for over 18 years, and we're not talking used junkers with 4WD. Everything from an AWD Buick Enclave to a Cadillac Escalade have been loaned during snow storms. The officer driving the loaded 'Sclade reportedly didn't want to give the plush ride back. We get that feeling all the time. What does Coast Pontiac GMC get for its generosity? A public relations victory for sure, but every storm also works as a rolling advertisement for Coast Pontiac GMC's SUVs...

Filed under: Government/Legal , GM , HUMMER , Saab , Saturn , Earnings/Financials Let's go ahead and get it out there: General Motors doesn't have a plan for Saab, Saturn, or HUMMER - it has a bunch of hopes, ideas and proposals. The best that GM can do with Saab is try to extricate the brand from its entangled web, which might make it more attractive to a buyer. That includes moving 9-3 and 9-5 production to Sweden and being "engaged with the Swedish government" on a plan for Saab's future. But GM has admitted that "Saab is not a U.S. strategy," and the code behind that statement is probably, "We get rid of or kill it." GM's focus is on Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC, and Pontiac "will shrink substantially." The other brands appear to be waiting out their death row sentences on appeal. Saturn, like Saab, is so entrenched in GM that an outside buyer is a remarkably dim prospect. Saturn production is funded until 2012 (for now)...
